Still really liking Clayton Keller! Coyotes may not win too many games, but Keller is at least trying to win.

I did see the headline in the AZ Republic a few days ago. I haven't read it yet. I did read the piece you linked which seems to be sourced from the Republic piece. The Coyotes management and ownership has been a revolving door the past several years. They've brought in a lot of people who had never been in control of a sports franchise before. It doesn't surprise me that bad practices have creeped in. I guess we'll wait and see what results from this.

The NHL's sorting method for points is dumb. As I write this comment Dustin Brown and Teuvo Teravainen each have 8 goals and 11 assists, but Teravainen has played in two less games and even averages about 5 minutes less ice time per game, and yet Brown is ahead of him among players with 19 points.

All participating Olympic hockey teams not hailing from USA, Canada or Russia have to be pretty damn hyped today.

Except there's a pretty good chance the KHL will refuse to allow their players to go now as well (or at the very least tell their non-russian players they may lose their contracts if they go) which means the hockey tourney is just going to be about on par with a WJHC (or perhaps more accurately given the rando europe playing players, a spengler cup.)

Dustin Brown has more than 10 points before 2018, that is worthy enough of a tiebreaker

I'd say Sweden is less screwed than most as the SEL is at least a half decent league that many players stay in for a few years before moving on to the KHL or getting poached by the NHL (though obviously less so since they K started throwing money they don't have at people.) They at least have the advantage of having a player pool close to home that will be most of their peeps and being able to do more pre-games prep work. It'll be interesting to see how Switzerland does though. They've been getting a ton better to begin with and even minus some of their top end guys they might do some damage. Honestly I'm disappointed there weren't a few more wacky teams this time. Go South Korea!

Cameron Ward earned his 300th NHL win last night in the Canes first game against Vegas. In honor of that, here's a reminder that, despite the fact that with the exception of like two regular seasons, and the '06 Cup run, he's been a pretty mediocre goalie, Ward has always had a knack for making incredible athletic saves.

I just finished 16 straight nights either performing or rehearsing with the Symphony. I have not seen a hockey game in that entire span.
Anything interesting and/or important happen that I should know about?

I continue to await the Jets return to form but Hellebuyck seems intent on living up to his promise this year so maybe they are going to be a good team.

Dustin Brown scored the OT game winner in his 1,000th career game. This has been a great season so far.

Watching the Jets beat Nashville the other night, I could actually envision them doing well in the playoffs. That was some high caliber hockey

Recounting the Punch-up in Piestany at the 1987 WJC. Anyone watching this year’s? I think the author may well embellish by imputing ideological hatred to the Canadian side, players or spectators. As the piece mentions, dust-ups were had between the US and Canadian teams during the tournament as well. I don’t know where polls of public opinion of the USSR in 1987 could be found, but I’m put in mind of this photo of a display at the OSC in 1978: Soviet spaceships presented as pretty cool, as against a terrible menance.

I might watch if I have streaming access. I quite enjoyed the last one.
Additionally, it was so fun to see Auston Matthews play here in Phoenix last night. He scored a beautiful goal in that game in front of his hometown fans. He had a beaming smile after that. It made me happy. It's wonderful that Phoenix has produced such a great hockey player.

What was the fan reaction to a play like that, scored by unquestionably the best Arizonan player of all time, given that one goal is hardly a season-killer at this point?

The Canes have won seven of their last eight games, and suddenly after nearly falling out of realistic playoff contention in December, they're just one point out of the last wild card spot (and just two points out of the top wild card spot, which is good, because I have a very hard time seeing the Canes take a series against the Lightning more than five games) with a game in hand on both wild card teams. They've been in similar situations before, and odds are they'll probably have a rough patch at some point that will put an end to their postseason hopes, but on the other hand they just might be able to make it into the playoffs, for the first time this decade.

Big cheer in the arena, from Leafs fans and from Coyotes fans. His smile was huge hearing that reaction. It was great. Coyotes fans are very proud of Auston Matthews. He's said that he probably wouldn't have gotten into hockey if the Coyotes hadn't been here. I am definitely not the only Coyotes fan who follows all of his stats and watches highlights of his games. He gets a decent amount of press here, considering he's basically the only NHL player from here. If you're a baseball player from Arizona, no one really cares. But, if you're an NHL player from Arizona everyone knows your name. Edited: I mean, like, the Coyotes got crushed in that game, and all the local headlines were a variation of "Matthews scores goal in front of hometown fans"

I want to take a time machine back to a few months ago and tell my then-self that (1) the Avs are in the playoff hunt, (2) the team traded Duchene and somehow got WAY BETTER, (3) MacKinnon is getting MVP consideration and (4) if we made the wild-card we'd likely play the VEGAS FOOKIN GOLDEN KNIGHTS in the opening round.
Actually, bad idea. He'd die laughing and I would no longer exist.

This Coyotes-Sharks game just started at 8:45pm local time. I thought one of the advantages of living in the west was the reasonable start times for sports! I feel betrayed.

Perhaps the stadium did double-duty that day? We went to Stars-Avs last night (great game!) and they had an 8pm start due to the Mavericks playing at noon earlier that day. I don't envy the stadium staff for having to flip everything over in a few hours (after an overtime game, even).

But that is still a bit late? It isn't yet as crazy as some of the Pac 12 football schedules. I've seen games START at 9pm.

At this point, I'm going to become a Vegas fan for the rest of the season. They're local-ish and that's a great story. It's a great story but I'm getting super super tired of sportswriters calling them "by far the greatest expansion team ever! OMG!" Of course they are, they're literally the only expansion team ever given a chance to make something approaching an NHL roster in their first year. I certainly didn't see their success coming at this level (and Vegas fans should be forever thanking their lucky stars that Florida's owner continues to be the dumbest person in existence) but let's not make out George McPhee to be some sort of wizard savant compared to the guys who brought the sens/lightning/ducks/sharks/BJs etc into the league. Don't get me wrong, he's a good GM but his defence stockpiling in the expansion draft didn't pan out at all, he got lucky on some really strange decisions and the expansion draft rules were so miles ahead of anything anyone else got that Mike Milbury could have drafted the greatest expansion team ever. Also: The team's home record/performance of visitor teams definitely suggests that people weren't wrong about the "OMG VEGAS" distraction factor and it's been fun watching various teams try different methods to avoid it. But still that's certainly going to fade over time, especially with division rivals. I'm glad to see them come in strong though, I just hope their fan support weathers the arrival of the NFL without too much of an issue. If nothing else I'd like to go see a game there as I haven't been to Vegas in quite a while at this point but the flights for Jets games have been at extortion level and the Flames games weren't convenient for me this year. Their jerseys are still fugly though.

Yeah, but I'm in Arizona, so I'm used to fugly jerseys. Did you see what the DBacks were wearing as their uniform a couple seasons ago? Ye Gods!
All of what you said is true. But getting lucky in the expansion draft is still getting lucky in the expansion draft. No matter how much more favorable the rules are.
And it is amusing me to see so many teams going in there and losing. Guys, this isn't that hard. When I said Vegas was local-ish, let me explain by saying that in high school and college we often had conferences and competitions in Vegas. One time - in Vegas! - our choir director literally gave us $40 each one night and said "Go have fun!" the night before a major performance. We were all fine to perform the next morning. Because we weren't stupid.
If college kids can do this, then hockey teams can do this.
