So series 8 begins this weekend, the premiere seems to be well-received among the people who saw it, and the list of episode titles came out today. Who's hyped!?

I am looking forward to being totally let down by the Doctor's lack of swearing.

Oh, Moffat still writes this?
Pass. Let me know when he gets fired and I'll jump back on board.

I have not seen The Thick of It, (although it sounds like something I would enjoy) and the two main things I remember Peter Capaldi from are "Local Hero" and "Lair of the White Worm", so I expect my perceptions of him to be challenged. Looking forward to it.

I just watched In the Loop, which is the first Capaldi thing I've seen since Lair of the White Worm and Local Hero (hi Floyd Diabolical Barber) and I am now officially excited for the new Doctor. I should probably confess that I didn't care for Matt Smith; he was fine, GGG all around but so damn young I just couldn't deal with it. Capaldi seems like a great choice.

What's really exciting me are the continuing rumours that Capaldi pretended he was a Moffatt fan just long enough to get a 2 season contract, then put his foot down with Moffatt about what was wrong with the show - refusing any romantic storylines (especially with Clara) and basically demanding Moffatt stop playing silly buggers with the character.
I note that, by pure coincidence, Clara is leaving this season.

I note that, by pure coincidence, Clara is leaving this season. The thought of a doctor not caught up in a romance seems pretty great after years of side romances over the last seven seasons. Perhaps the writers were also getting tired of it as well, as the War Doctor makes a sputtering comment about Ten kissing Queen Elizabeth to Eleven.

Well, on first view, I'm very intrigued. Twelve is indeed fierce and dark, but still a lot of fun as well. Clara takes a huge step toward becoming my favorite companion since Ace, and the closing scene w "Missy" sets up the series arc well. In the parlance of the Old Country, I'm cautiously optimistic that this is shaping up to be a strong run, maybe the strongest since Series 5.
Was it perfect? No. But it's got me very interested in what comes next.

I actually am going to have to reserve judgment - I had a very hard time understanding everyone which may not have helped. I usually watch with captions on but for some reason Amazon Instant Video captions didn't work.

No, certainly not perfect, but that scene with Capaldi offering the Half-Face Man a drink was indeed perfection.
Also, given Moffat's history writing women, I am terrified at where Missy might end up going.

I know that, being someone who only started watching after the relaunch, I don't really have any right to this stance, but I do kind of miss the days when Dr. Who was just this show I watched on my laptop in college and I didn't know anyone else that watched it. It was fun, simpler.
That being said, as much as I enjoyed Tennant and Smith, the new series seems like it's going to be more on my specific wavelength, so I'm excited.

I admit, at first the episode left me baffled. Not that I wasn't giggling, but the level of slapstick was super high. I don't think we've ever seen a female companion get straight-up whapped in the face before. And that bait-and-switch joke wherein Madame Vasta seems to be painting Jenny, then flips the canvas and surprise! It's a chart of murders - it made me laugh, but it felt like a different show.
I feel like the whole thing didn't start to gel until the Doctor's talk with the tramp. That felt like classic Doctor Who, with the Doctor working things out aloud, sounding like a madman to the people who don't know him. By the time he has the conversation with Clara at the restaurant, I think the episode firmed up, and I was convinced that Peter Capaldi would make a pretty great Doctor.
Though I am stunned that the showrunners decided it was necessary to spend an ENTIRE EPISODE convincing fans that, sure he looks old now but he's still the Doctor, guys! They must be afraid of losing all their tumblr fans.

Seems like the painting scene and probably a couple other of the Team Vasta scenes would have been trimmed out in a normal episode.

This week's episode can be summed up thus... "Ooh, look! We have a Dalek that is 1) damaged and 2) hates other Daleks. Let's fix the broken bit! What could possibly go wrong?" Seriously, once they fix the Dalek and it goes murderspree, the Doctor stands around for five minutes going "what's happened?". Fuck. Me. Other than that... direction oddly flat (I love his films, but Wheatley just doesn't direct telly well) and, though Capaldi is the Vicious Cunt Doctor I've dreamed of for years, he's not being served well thus far. Slightly more positive view from Bleeding Cool (which also points out one of the worst scenes in the show that I can remember - it's no. 3.

Liked this week's right up to when... ...it became yet another story about how Clara is The Super-Specialest Companion Of Them All. And; if there's nothing under the bed, what was that fucking great lump under the blanket? What wrote on the blackboard? Is The Doctor making fucking tulpas now?? And if his talisman as a scared kid was a soldier, why does he hate them now? And, and, and... Mood was good though, and I love what Capaldi's doing.

Just want to make a quick observation about Jenna Coleman's acting, from what I've seen of it. I never get the sense that she's reacting to the other performer in the scene - it's as if she's saying her lines in isolation, as it were. It bugs me, somewhat.

I did not like Listen. At all. I found myself rolling my eyes and saying "this is stupid" several times. I felt like it was trying too hard to be the "meaningful" episode. Overall grade, D.

Does anyone know if BBCA is editing the new episodes for time? I've been... obtaining... the episodes because I know they have in the past. I've been watching the broadcasts lately so I can have captioning (because the sound mixing is terrible and some lines are lost to my ears), and I haven't really noticed any differences, but I'm not sure since I'm not paying super-close attention the second time I watch them (really it's only for the bits I think I might have misheard the first time around).
Also I liked Listen a lot and my brother didn't and I am le sad because of that.
(Then again my brother thinks the Tenth Doctor is brilliant and I vehemently do not and I am sure he is le sad because of that.)
(Actually he probably doesn't give a shit and just thinks I'm wrong.)

Like Moffat's best episodes, the hour had a perfected sense of mood with a plethora of nonsensical plot holes. That said, this is the first episode aside from the Cybermen/submarine one I've unabashedly liked since early season 6. I confuse myself sometimes.

I agree with a lot that's been said; love Capaldi, who gives a great performance as Doctor, but I'm not liking the stories so far. Thought I'd like Listen, but ended up rolling my eyes when it anti-climaxed with no explanation at all.
I'm really liking the ongoing thread of the Doctor insulting Clara's appearance, though. That could easily be on the wrong side of nasty but Capaldi and Coleman have sold it so far.

I finally got around to watching Listen last night and I was really into it right up until they got too cute with the ending. I'm fine with some things not being explained, I think that sort of open-ended mystery actually works well for Doctor Who on occasion, but this just felt like a weird, unsatisfying way to wrap things up. It also felt like it might be planting seeds that they'll come back to later in the season, so I'll reserve some judgment until then.
And Capaldi, of course, is just killing it. What a fresh change from Smith. Smith and Tennant were both fine and entertaining, but a 3rd doctor in that ilk wouldn't have been this fun.

Doctor does a Leverage-style caper, but it's really a Rescue Operation... lovely. Lots of nice Gnostic symbolic touches (which I'd love to think were deliberate, but...). Yeah; best so far. EDIT: did a blog post in which I summed up the whole episode in 3 pictures. Then waffled on about 5-person Invisibles cells & the Leverage team.

EDIT: did a blog post in which I summed up the whole episode in 3 pictures. Then waffled on about 5-person Invisibles cells & the Leverage team. Very enjoyable episode, for sure. Not to keep comparing to last season/doctor, but I could have easily seen the Smith version of this episode having a zanier, "oh boy, we're robbing a bank!" tone and I'm glad we got Capaldi and this version of the episode instead.
Did anybody else read the old country review? I really disagree with his main criticism. Not every episode needs to be a deep examination of who the doctor is, what the doctor means, what the doctor feels guilty about. Sometimes you can just keep those character considerations in the background and just tell a fun story.
Last thought: Is that 3 episodes in a row with no Missy tag at the end? I would assume we're due for a little progress on the season-long story soon.

Nah, the Robots of Sherwood had their ship's destination set as The Promised Land, so just two episodes. (and some feel the "woman in the shop" plot thread might relate)

I liked three minutes of this week - the class commentary from Danny - and truly hated the rest.
