Created a facebook page devoted to my Creative Writing classes. Chose a name that references Dylan, made a few status updates, added some stylish b/w pictures of the writers who crop up a lot (Donna Tartt has already been mistaken for Johnny Depp; you can see there's a long road ahead), and sent the link to the stude nts. In two days, I've done more on this page than I have on my own in 9 years. Here's the link, should anyone fancy a nosey around: www.facebook.com/talesbasementHave you ever had a student that was genuinely talented? Oh God, loads. It's scary, how much talent is out there. I don't view things through rose-coloured glasses, but yeah, there are loads. One in particular, I remember, the first week she came, her work was pretty good. After that, every week was stellar. Even the best students have a bad week now and again, but she never did. She went on to do an MA (I gave her the most glowing reference imaginable), but since then, radio silence. There are also quite a few students who can do comedy with ease, and comic writing is by far the hardest sort to do. I envy them, and it shows. The problem is I never encounter talent allied with confidence and ambition. I do what I can to boost all three, but I've never really had a student (in 13 years! - fuck!) who was 'the full package'. So none of them have tried to go much beyond getting the occasional short story placed (which is nice enough), and most don't even try that. The fear of rejection is hard to break through, I suppose (though not for me). Most are happy to come along, read their work to the group, and that's all the outlet they need.

Let me know if you ever decide to do an online course. Er, or maybe not. I like you and I'd be sad if you thought my work was crap. Haven't written anything purely for myself in ages.

No no, I'm very kindly in my comments. I'm sure your work would be fine, but carving out the time to write regularly week after week might be tough, considering the hours you must work. Online courses are something I should look into, definitely. I've been saying that for a while, though.

Yesterday I participated in a "beer mile" charity run organized by a friend of mine. The beer mile is a challenge in which you are required to drink a full beer as fast as possible before each of four laps around a track. I ran the mile in 10 minutes and 11 seconds. Rather proud of that time.

You started teaching when I was in grade school! How does that make you feel?

There is also a vodka steeplechase I want to eventually do, but I think I would die.

I came close on the final lap, but I just slowed my pace and held my own. Sadly I came in second place (and so my charity didn't win) but that's because my friend who organized it happens to be training for a marathon. His time was under nine minutes.

So that means we can run fast and we are good at drinking because it's hard to be a track runner in high school and not drink a lot to suppress the sadness. Sorry your charity didn't win. 10 minutes is an exceptional time. I can run a fast mile but I am terrible at drinking beer. I doubt I could do it that quickly.

This weekend I hiked 14 kilometers on snowshoes and hurt my back having shower sex. I would high-five people but I can't really move right now.

Both Iffy and I were pretty ill, so we were sending tons of sympathetic texts to each other. I feel 100% now. Like you know that feeling when you've been sick, and when you feel completely better you just wanna run around outside and eat all the delicious food? I've got that. Good week to have it since it's gonna be so nice out and I got my tax return! I can do both things if I want!

Last year I thought it would be a good idea if I got started on the whole investing surplus funds thing with a thing that was a modern, online variation on the term deposit
I actually followed through last week
