The kitchen faucet was leaking, and I fixed it. I just had to screw it back into place, but I'm pretty sure I'm an expert plumber now you guys.

Today I somehow managed to sleep through the landscapers cutting back the shrubs right outside my window. It was amazing!

I took the #1 place in our office NFL pool this week. I'm happy because I made back my $20, so if I win any future weeks, that'll just be icing on the cake.

One of the designers refused to make a coworker's 40th birthday card and I was asked to make one (I'm no designer). It ended up being not completely garbage-y which made me happy. The recipient also liked it.

I'm not really all that super proud, but I took a little college admissions exam today and scored really well. It was just a reading-comprehension assessment, which may have been required only since the majority of my classes would be online, but I finished in 15 minutes of the allotted hour and scored higher than the admissions person said she had seen in years. It was like, just shy of perfect. Again it was 5 passages of dry text with 5-7 questions following each thing, but I'm going to go ahead and feel pretty good about it.

I half-assed my final assignment for my first grad school class and got a perfect score on it! Sure, that means that the professor is an easy grader. But still!

Today I successfully* put new front brake pads and rotors on the car.
*In as much as that it has stopped making that grinding noise, and I haven't run into anything since.

I just had to have my brakes (pads and discs) replaced—it was something my father was supposed to get the pads resurfaced when I was in Amsterdam, didn’t and ha ha one trip through the Rockies later I need to replace everything.
My minor thing I’m inordinately proud of is waking up early to correspond w/colleagues and my mentor from the Netherlands. That’s not a big deal, but I woke up early without any alarm and completely surprised myself.

Car Talk always made that sound really hard. I have worked on the brakes on a couple of my trucks where it was a huge pain in the ass, but I guess the complexity varies a lot depending on what make and model you are working on. This was a late 90's Lincoln town car that belonged to my folks, and other than getting a couple of the bolts broken loose, was actually pretty straightforward. Of course, it probably helped that I had done the brakes on the trucks within the last 6 months or so, so I had a little recent experience to draw on.

Thanks, but I guess not. My back has hurt all weekend from crawling around under the car on a hard concrete floor. Now if you'd like to buy me a lift for the shop I might reconsider...

At the security check before tonight's flight my bag was pulled aside because the x-ray spotted my full-size can of shaving cream, which I invariably and compulsively attempt to smuggle in carry-on luggage. The TSA guy pulled the mostly-empty can and weighed it in his hand, then swabbed the inside of my bag and fed the wipe into an IonScan. I made small talk about how I work with devices like that and asked about his swabbing technique, a major source of concern in the scientific explosives detection community.
The point is, he put my oversized shaving cream back in my bag and let me go.

Check-up at the dentist's yesterday - nothing needs to be done. Considering the grand guignol of the last couple of visits, and the decades of not going that led up to them, this doesn't feel very minor at all.

Corny as it may sound, it's amazing how something so seemingly inconsequential can lift a giant weight off one's shoulders. Tl;dr–Glad it went well and did you celebrate with chocolate?

I learned something today. When I moved out a few years ago, my parents bequeathed me a vacuum that doesn't do that. It's infuriating!

I successfully uploaded a video to Youtube so that others could watch it. It was harder than originally designed, because it was a video of Mrs. Rumak doing a Crossfit workout (so the judges could make sure she was meeting the standards), and the music playing during the workout is apparently copyrighted. You'd think there would be an easy way to fix this on Youtube, but even if you make it the video silent, it still flags the video. So I had to download Microsoft Movie Maker, remove the sound, save the video, and then upload it.
