Looks pretty cool. I hope Force ghost Yoda wanders around in the background of every scene. Looking forward to episode 8 even more, because Rian Johnson. This is pretty much where I'm at. Hoping Abrams doesn't bungle the first one so much to where I can still be enthused for when Johnson takes over. Though I hope he can also be directing episode 9, but it looks like he is just screenwriting for that one.

I dislike JJ Abrams, but even I got kind of giddy (even though the lightsaber is goofy). This is what the prequels should have looked like. It looks dirty and lived-in.
Also, black stormtrooper.

I am pretty sure he is in disguise ala Luke the short Stormtrooper. I don't think they would break continuity that much.

With the recent Wonder Woman news and the fact that Johnson has episode VIII, I'm now thinking about how a Michelle MacLaren-directed Star Wars would be. What if it was Rian Johnson, Michelle MacLaren, and maybe Moira Walley-Beckett teaming up for Star Wars? That would be awesome.

It's definitely that, though I don't see how his being a stormtrooper would break continuity. Everyone seems to agree that the Empire started hiring ordinary people once they ran out of clones.

That was pretty good, but I'm still not entirely sold. I think I'll be more on board once I'm certain that Nien Nunb or one of his offspring is featured prominently in this film.

I was cautiously optimistic before the teaser, and I remain cautiously optimistic. Sure, it could end up being as terrible as the prequels, but I'm not really getting the kneejerk "the prequels sucked so this will also suck!" vibe I see around, especially given the caliber of the people involved in the production and now a pretty good teaser. I'm not blinded by fanboy love or anything; I just look at the people involved (including Rian Johnson, though I know he isn't involved with Episode VII) and I think there's definitely enough there to at least be cautiously optimistic about the film's chances.

Godammit. I just have a pavlovian response to a lightsaber igniting, or that music. I'm in. I have that response to the sound of Star Wars weapons fire. Pew! Pew! *hands over all his money*

On this note: The Expanded Universe is all non-canon now so what it says about stromtroopers is besides the point; but the cartoon Star Wars Rebels - one of the first Star Wars products from the new, Disney era of the franchise - has an episode set in an Imperial Academy where they are training Stormtroopers, suggesting that Stormtroopers were regular conscripts as early as A New Hope. George Lucas went the other direction; when he re-released the original trilogy in 2004 he had Temeura Morrison - the actor who played Jango Fett and the clonetroopers - re-record all the Stormtrooper dialogue. I imagine that change is being ignored or at any rate contradicted here.

I was highly entertained by the lengthy discussion of the pros and cons of the exxxxtreme lightsaber over at The Dissolve.Count me among those who have a Pavlovian response to lightsaber noises and that theme, and there's zero chance that I won't see this, but I was disheartened when the second shot in the trailer was that little soccer ball droid thing. It's, like, cute and CG-looking and basically everything I disliked about the prequels. (Well, and the original, if we want to talk about Ewoks.) Regarding black stormtroopers, a) awesome, who cares, I was also down for the Donald Glover Spider-Man idea, and b) Attack the Block was awesome. (ETA: I'm aware that he's probably not an actual stormtrooper. Just sayin', I don't care either way.)

Yep, silly light saber. At least Darth Maul's made sense. It's got a form like a hand guard which is brilliant, except the little spouts for the guard stick out beyond the diameter of the main blade and would just be chopped off if used like a guard.

I guess it's great for a teaser, but I will be disappointed if all of that stuff ends being in the film. I guess this is extremely unrealistic to hope for, but I was hoping they would drop the stormtroopers, the millenium falcon, the x-wings, and all of that other shit. One thing I liked in the prequel trilogy was that the technology was somewhat different. They had different ships, different factions, different uniforms. 30 years isn't the longest time, but after two Death Stars destroyed, and Emperor killed, and a lot of dead Star Destroyers, it seems odd that there would still be a large enough structure for there to be stormtroopers. I know they're ignoring the EU, but the Thrawn Trilogy was basically the last strong showing of the Empire and that was only 5 years after Return of the Jedi.
It's a big universe. Maybe they don't need to have Sith and Stormtroopers as enemies every time. But judging by the reactions from everyone else, I am in the smallest of minorities.

On this note: The Expanded Universe is all non-canon ...as if a million bits of utterly useless trivia cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Goodbye Duloks. Goodbye Tri-clops. Goodbye Space Wilfred Brimley. Goodbye Dash Rendar. Goodbye Han Solo and Chewbacca fighting zombies stormtroopers.

the kneejerk "the prequels sucked so this will also suck!" vibe I see around If anything, it's the other way round - people who've barely been interested in film for years posting gushing comments after seeing this teaser. Eps 1-3 were rotten, rotten films, but okay it's in new hands now. So, the guy in charge of this has made one average Star Trek film and one awful one, and his last non-ST directing job was the boring "Super 8". I'm just sad that there seems to be no way that some people will stop spending money on Star Wars, no depths that can't be solved with a "next episode will be darker!" I'm sorry. I realise this won't change any minds. But Star Wars seems utterly protected against being terrible in a way that no other film franchise seems able to manage.

I realise this won't change any minds. But Star Wars seems utterly protected against being terrible in a way that no other film franchise seems able to manage. And the guy in charge of the next one (and possibly the one after) has made three superb films, and will be working with an excellent cast. I've seen the original trilogy once, and haven't even managed to watch episode 3 (and probably never will because why would I at this point?). The fact of the matter is that neither of us have any idea if this movie will be good or not, but bringing up the prequels in this argument makes no sense since I don't really think they have bearing here. And honestly I've seen a lot more caution about wasting money on another awful trilogy, from film fans and non-fans alike, than I've seen any mindless excitement for the teaser. I even mentioned that the most positive I am is cautiously optimistic, which isn't even positively excited. I'm just not sure why I'm supposed to think that this cast and crew will undeniably be terrible until I start to see reviews next December.

I'm just not sure why I'm supposed to think that this cast and crew will undeniably be terrible until I start to see reviews next December. Firstly, you're not "supposed to think that this cast and crew will undeniably be terrible". That's ridiculous, and no-one's said it. But regarding your "less mindless excitement" comment - as far away as page 1 of this very thread we've had one person saying it gave them chills and another "I'M SO EXCITED". Now, it's fine that they think that, although I disagree, I'm just saying those views are out there, and there's a lot of them (vast majority of my Facebook friends were unqualifiedly excited by it). But this argument is going nowhere, and there are undoubtedly lots of people who think both ways. But one comment of yours perfectly illustrates the point I'm trying to make, about "well, the next one has Rian Johnson". It's the endless "never mind this sucks, the next one will be better" that this particular franchise has relied on since the first reviews of "The Phantom Menace" came out. I can't think of a single other series that would be allowed the same treatment (Transformers has never pretended to be any good).

It seems like an odd complaint to make. Most people who are defending the new ones in each of your cases probably don't think the others ones are that bad. Like I would rate Ep III above Ep VI. Sure they both had issues, but that is true of all the films. Being optimistic about a new film is not ignoring the problems with the other films, it is just being excited to revisit the universe.

The Ewoks really kill RotJ for me. I keep imagining how much more awesome it would have been on Kashyyyk.
But RotS has "he's... killing younglings!" so maybe they both suck.

Not only the Ewoks, but a second death star with a similar vulnerability!?

I'm not very jaded about the original trilogy, sure Jedi has Ewoks. It also has Jabba's palace and barge sequence, speeder bike chase, giant space battle, Luke vs. Vader...
So I can't really agree with an opinion that Sith is better than Jedi. It seems objectively false if you just look at the salient events in each film and how they are delivered. Sith has one or two fun things in it, delivered badly. Jedi has lots of great stuff delivered well. But everybody just goes "EWOKS!!!"

Not only the Ewoks, but a second death star with a similar vulnerability!? I buy into the EU fan theory that the Empire was eventually going to engineer dozens of Death Stars in order to combat the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong's Worldships. In fact, the Rebel Alliance pretty much fucked the galaxy in that they destroyed the one unified power that could have saved it, /fanwank
