The first Star Wars movie in nearly a decade is less than 13 months away, and now a trailer is rumored to be unveiled this coming Thanksgiving weekend in an ambitious manner; the trailer reportedly will be out on all movies playing over the holiday weekend. Sounds like a huge undertaking, but If any movie called for it, it's this one. Plus, they have a teaser ready to go, as they just showed it this evening at a dinner for the 501st. What do you guys think about this rumor? And more importantly, what are you most excited about seeing in this new cosmic adventure?

I will forever be disappointed that this is not the Thrawn Trilogy, but as long as JJ tones down the lens flares I'm hoping for some classic, sweeping space opera without the stilted prequel dialogue and ridiculous attempts at political commentary.

I dunno. Maybe if Abrams wasn't doing it I'd be more excited, but I've really lost faith in him and it's especially disappointing to just get the guy who did Star Trek to do Star Wars because hey they're similar space-based properties, right? A friend of mine is really pumped though, and is trying to get me on board (Abrams is a huge Star Wars fan! Kasdan is writing! Spielberg is secretly in charge of the whole thing!) but nothing. I don't even think I'll try to go see the trailer this weekend.
But, I do have a daughter who's been raised on a steady diet of Star Wars so she will be thrilled about a new movie, so I'm going to see this one way or the other.

I think Abrams will do a decent job, but I agree there are a lot of what-ifs. What if they went with the established Thrawn storyline? What if it was Joss Whedon at the helm instead?
I do think Abrams is a slightly better fit for Star Wars than he was for Star Trek. Trek is science fiction while Star Wars is pure fantasy. He is no Spielberg, but I think his strengths lie more in the fantasy realm.

Here's the teaser. Yes, I got chills a couple of times, especially with Old Luke, Jedi Master.
EDIT: rumour that this is fan-made. If so, it's stunning...

But it looked like they had the actual actors in there, but I guess that does explain that one on one jedi lightsaber duel in the middle of desert feeling weirdly out of place. Anyway good job, had me more than convinced it was an Abrams film with all those lens flares(though they were conspicuously absent in the scene with the chrome stromstrooper in what looked to be the engineering section of a ship.

As far as I'm aware that teaser is fan made, which is a relief because outside the admittedly awesome vfx shots I was more impressed by Jurassic World.

@taxman Those clips could be from fan films, some of those had pretty decent production values. The CGI in a couple of shots gives it away as a fan trailer, though, especially the outer space stuff.
Anyone remember using crappy dial-up internet to download a version of this trailer?

In all seriousness, the actual teaser trailer will be online Friday morning. IM SO EXCITED!!!! Really? Do you not remember how thoroughly rotten the last three films were? How bad does this franchise have to get before we stop spending money on it? Abrams has made 1 sort of alright Star Trek film and one boring as hell one; plus his previous directorial effort was "Super 8", which I thought was pretty bad too. So we've got a director coming off two films which were "meh" at best, a thoroughly discredited franchise which is now really only a name, thanks to Disney buying it. Okay, cautious optimism that the previously set-up universe might make a good film is fine, I suppose. But all-caps excitment over a teaser trailer just tells the producers that they don't have to try, because the masses will turn up, it'll make a huge profit and then (if it's more like the quality of the previous three films) they can just handwave it all away with "the next one will be darker" - remember that when Ep 2 was announced? - and everyone will turn up for that too. I just wish "fandom" expected something a bit better, is all.

You hear that, NerdInTheBasement? Stop sending your all caps excitement directly to the producers!

I just wish "fandom" expected something a bit better, is all. Well, the prequels aren't out-and-out "rotten" completely (Thought Attack of The Clones is rotten as a film, I agree with that); they've got tons of moments and scenes that are tremendously awful, but there's also a ton of memorable visuals, characters (General Grevious is sooooooooo cool) and action beats hidden among those heavily flawed features. The main flaw with those features was George Lucas being involved on a writing level, and look! He's not here anymore! J.J. Abrams, in my opinion, is a great director, capable of making wonder and awe in his features. Star Trek and Super 8 were fantastic, and while Star Trek Into Darkness had sloppy moments, it too was loads of fun. Maybe the movie will be terrible. There's certainly things I'm worried about for this production. But guess what? The first trailer for the first Star Wars film in nearly a decade is coming. With the original cast. Right now, the anticipation and excitement I feel is a memorable event in it's own right, and that's truly something awesome. I expect a good movie here, but that doesn't mean I can't get excited for what's to come on Friday.

That was pretty cool for not showing anything at all.
What's with the lightsaber though? Wouldn't that make it more dangerous to handle.

Invisible Goat Could say the same thing about Maul's lightsaber. I guess it's just the inevitable 'LIGHTSABER BUT DIFFERENT' that the bad guys always have to have since Maul.

HOLY SHIT WHAT A TRAILER
Great way to tease things, love that we can see te new characters in the spotlight. And it looks like it fits the original trilogy like a glove in terms of style and look!
And the bit with the Millenium Falcon at the end......I cheered, guys, it's that glorious.

It was the Falcon for me. Did you all notice that they have not repaired the radar dish from Episode 6 yet?

The storm trooper scene was neat change from the more formal shots we are used to. Kind of makes me think about how a "Death Troopers" adaptation might work.

Currently hating myself for my Pavlovian response to that goddamn trailer. They're fucking me in the ass with a nostalgia-shaped battering ram and I'm loving it.
I'm probably going to spend money I don't have to go see it at midnight opening day, just like those fucking prequels, even though I swore I never would. I'll probably go home angry and disappointed, but for now I'm going to dream that it's gonna be super awesome times.
Because I'm weak and so very stupid.

I don't know why the lightsaber needs quillons, though.

Everything we saw was like an answer to something you wondered as a kid that the OT never got to. "Do stormtroopers ever take their helmets off?" "FUCK YEAH THEY DO LOOK AT THIS!" "Can X-Wings and TIE Fighters fly on planets and fight on them too?" "FUCK YES LOOK AT THIS SHIT!" "How do Stormtroopers get around!" "ON BIG FUCKING DROPSHIPS IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR ZONE SHITTING THEIR PANTS BEFORE A DROP!"

Looks pretty cool. I hope Force ghost Yoda wanders around in the background of every scene.
Looking forward to episode 8 even more, because Rian Johnson.

Oh, they've having separate directors on all these? I could see for the spin-offs but I kind of like trilogies to have one vision to them...then again the original trilogy had more than one director and having one director for the prequels was clearly a bad idea so I don't know...
