It's exactly what you'd expect a movie from The State to be, no less and no more. Well, maybe slightly less. Yeah, but I liked The State. And I watched this thinking "yes, this is a thing I will will like because I liked the other thing." Then again, I've had that baffling lack of connection with everything The State folks did after The State, so maybe it's more me than them. I dunno. This happens to me too sometimes. I come across something that has a bunch of elements that I love and therefore I should love it, but for whatever reason, I'm underwhelmed. For example, I loved Shaun of the Dead - love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost - and I love action movies, but I thought Hot Fuzz was just okay. I wanted to like it more than I actually did.

Today’s AVCQ&A brought out a lot of familiar jokes and faces, which I’m glad about. I’ve been visiting less and less largely because I feel my taste is mostly orthogonal to the site’s now.

I thought the so-called "Jessica Alba Fantastic Four" movies were OK.

hot fuzz is a grower, not a show-er. SOTD was great out of the gate. the 3rd of the trilogy has yet to move me.

It looks like I'm likely to miss the PCW again tonight. As much as I love the PCW, I kind of hope this becomes a pattern.

This is pretty out there and is probably going to ruffle a few feathers, but I think beer is a pretty good thing to drink.

Here's one: John Teti is a dick, and one of the most unnecessarily confrontational reviewers on the site. Have you heard the stories his mom tells about the post office? ...that sounded wrong

Here's a film that I really didn't like when it came out, despite the gushing reviews and adoration found on the AV Club: Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are. It's such a slow, long, ponderous, and dull film that it's no surprise that it wasn't embraced as a beloved new children's film by audiences (at the theater I saw it at, you could feel how agitated and bored the crowd was throughout). I don't have a problem with the attempts to pump more narrative into the admittedly thin story, but a meditative reflection on a child dealing with his parents divorce through the metaphor of an island of quarrelsome monsters is probably not what people really wanted to see with this adaptation.

You're telling me that that isn't the popular opinion of that movie and that there are people who actually liked it? It was boring and aesthetically unpleasing to the eye. I guess the Karen O(h) soundtrack was pretty okay, but that's about it.

I still have not seen the 3rd movie Same. I'm not sure why I've not made it a priority, honestly. I'm sure it's not, but it just felt like running back Shaun of the Dead from the previews.

i was unaware that dazed and confused was that much praised as to be "rated" at all, as it were, but if people are shoving something down your throat, it always tastes bad. D&C fits in with american graffiti, diner, and so on for me-- they are what they are. what i remember-- will always remember most about linklater is Slacker, and how super-bananas-apeshit my peers went over it when it was the hot thing as a video rental.
i remember checking it out again recently and thinking that it did not age well, but i still appreciate it as a touchstone.
Yeah, I generally like Linklater stuff I've seen, but while i can appreciate the idea behind "Slacker" it did nothing for me. Also found the people in it kinda annoying, though for some of them that may have been intended.

I don't care for Ghostbusters. While I remember really enjoying it when I saw it as a 7 year old, and watched it on TV more than once growing up, I honestly don't get the intensity of love that film receives. In a way it mirrors how I feel about Bill Murray. Always like him in everything he does, but just do not get the deep adulation towards him. Now the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, that was a masterpiece!

Of a piece with AVC's Wet Hot American Summer push this week, I have to say I really don't care for the original movie. It's funny in place, but this a smugness about it that feels as though it's far funnier than it actually is. The notion of a series is . . .something of a hard sell. I will say as someone that thought the movie was ok but not nearly as funny as others seem to think, the show is much much better.

The further away I get from my viewing of Inherent Vice, the more I just grow apathetic towards it. Blah.

I really enjoy the Henry Rollins Show on KCRW. Every evening on weekends, he puts on some music you wouldn't even hear on the rest of KCRW, then he talks about it. It's like he wants you to know about the music. Who could imagine a DJ who wants you about the music he's playing!?

I'm a big fan of The State but always thought Wet Hot the movie was just okay. Which actually makes me the ideal audience for the series probably: I like the source material but I'm not inordinately devoted to it. I'm really enjoying the Netflix series.

Perhaps one day I'll post a link or upload to the 'sound of our voices' thread...

I don't like the angry, confrontational persona he's curated over the years, and his opinions can be pretty hit or miss with me as well, but I agree with you completely about the music. I've not heard his radio show, but he had a TV version of The Henry Rollins Show for awhile (maybe still does?), and he endeared me to him by once having The Mars Volta in studio and letting them play one of their 12 minute songs in full. His passion for the music in the introduction only helped. Link to the youtube video.

Mads Mikkelsen is about as scary as the bag boy at my supermarket.
What I'm saying is, I've seen an episode of Hannibal and wasn't impressed in the least. I'd rather just watch Silence of the Lambs again.
