New Silksong trailer. Day one on Game Pass. No release date, but the official Xbox Twitter account later announced that all games shown at the showcase would be playable within 12 months and, when asked about it, re-emphasized that yes, that means Silksong too. So we have a release window of 364 days. Great.
The novelty of releasing a game that looks and seems nearly mechanically identical to its predecessor wears thin six years after the fact

I am still playing Pathfinder Kingmaker but I don't know why. The house at the end of time has to be the absolute worst designed dungeon I have EVER played in an RPG and it never fucking ends. It's basically unplayable without a walkthrough unless you want to devote a literal week of your life to it. This had such potential to be a great game but it's let down by things like this and the terrible implementation of the kingdom building system. I'm still at the kingdom building part and I wonder how the tabletop campaign handled it. It must have been a pain in the ass for the GM if there was as much stuff to track as in the computer game.

I have not played the game, but when my group played the tabletop campaign years ago we ended up vastly simplifying the kingdom building elements of the game, because it was a lot and most of the party didn't really care all that much. So we'd spend like 15 minutes at the top of the night just talking over what we wanted to happen, and then we'd get back to adventuring.

I enjoy the concept but yeah. Whoever designed the UX for it needs to not be let near a game again. And that's putting aside the fact that the explanations for it are awful, simple QoL things aren't there even after the supposed "enhanced edition" and on even regular difficulty it's incredibly easy to fuck yourself over for the entire game if you mess up early (and there are no warnings that you might be.) Single best example of that is the investigation of curses... game implies it's super important, but it really isn't in the early going... but all those take a ton of time... and simultaneously there are a bunch of problems/opportunities that you'll more likely fail on if you don't have your high priest available to do them. And you also need to be levelling that priest...

And you also need to be levelling that priest... I have an even more basic gripe and that's with the calendar. Some of those kingdom-building quests say you need to start them by 1 Rovagug or some crap and I'm like, uh, when the hell is that? I look at the hourglass and it's saying today is 12 Sarenith and then I'm all, "Thanks a goddamn lot that's super-informative, asshole". I refused to google the Pathfinder calendar but eventually I found out from a discussion on Steam that the Roman numerals after the month indicate what it is in the Gregorian calendar. It would have been super-helpful, if the game insisted on sticking to this other calendar, if it had at least let me know what month goes where.

Yeah, that's one my UX gripes too.
so many issues with that...
Also the fact that depending on what path you take in various quests you can sometimes have no actual options for some advisor positions... I didn't discover this until super late game when I had to drop a fortune hiring a merc very late game to fill a position.

I was peeping the game trials for sony's PS plus premium(or whatever tier), since I was able to upgrade for a cheap price due to existing sub. Horizon 2 is 166 GBs...... fuck that.

Picked up the Final Fantasy X / X-2 collection for Switch. I'm glad I read reviews online first. Not because I worried about the quality, but because I learned that with the disc version, which I could have probably found used locally or online for cheaper than digital, X-2 is a download code only. I would have thought I was buying both games and likely ended up with only one of them.
Not sure when I'll start the playthrough with the kids, but it probably won't be long. Maybe next week.
I love X and haven't played it in a really long time. Not sure how I feel about voice acted cutscenes. On the one hand, it'll be nice to not have to read the entire game out loud. On the other, those cutscenes are sloooooooooow, and I can't skip them like I normally would.
And this is way off, but I'm looking forward to playing X-2 again. I've restarted it a few times over the years, but I've only beaten it once.

Speaking of voice acted cut scenes, what is everyone’s opinion of the Breath of the Wild voice acting? My opinion is moderately negative, and in addition, I feel like it was unnecessary and adds nothing to the game.

Sounds like they hired a bunch of amateurs off Newgrounds to give hammy, wooden vocal performances in a misguided attempt at matching the timbre of the original Japanese audio.

Not strictly a video game question, but posting here due to a video game example: what pop culture things have people experienced that haven't just been better than expected, but way more ambitious than expected? Two obvious examples for me would be "Better Call Saul" and "Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea". Before release BCS looked like it was probably just going to be a lighter spinoff of Breaking Bad, where we would see Saul get into his trademark shenanigans with a variety of different clients. Turned out to be an epic tale of reinvention and corruption that some suggest is even better than Breaking Bad. Similarly, BI:BAS looked like a fun but inessential little standalone "What if" DLC that puts Booker and Elizabeth into a noir-ish plot where we get to see Rapture pre-collapse, and it turned into this grand piece tying both the games and their themes together.

I started it last year when I got a Switch then got fed up and ignored it for 6 months. I got back into it last week and now that I've worked out what I'm doing I think it's good and fun. The voice acting is not great but I also don't care because I don't think I've played any games with voice acting that was better.

Played the first 6 levels of Shredder's Revenge with my wife and 4 year-old yesterday. He's on a big ninja turtles kick at the moment, so he's loving it, even if it's a bit difficult for him to play. Actually I've been very impressed by how well he can move and position his character, but the attack button ("Y" on Switch) is the furthest reach for his little hands, so he's constantly mashing the wrong button when trying to attack stuff. Just dodge flipping all over the place.
Game itself is lots of fun. Feels like Turtles in Time from back in the day, looks fantastic. I like the story mode in which you can collect points and find collectibles (for more points) to upgrade your character with more health, more attacks, and extra uses of your special.
And we need those extra lives, too, because the bosses are rough. Even on the easiest difficulty, we've had some close scrapes with a couple of the tougher bosses. The Rat King was a nightmare. Be sure to actually pay attention to the tutorial. I was just trying to move things along and get the game going for my son, so I didn't know until level 4 that with the press of button you can take a very short break and recharge your special.

I finally got the griffon mount in Guild Wars 2 after six MONTHS of grind. I am so proud of myself! I alarmed the cats with my enthusiasm when I got it.

It's nice having a (masked, socially distanced) crowd again--I hadn't realized how much I missed the cheering. I'm glad they're keeping up some online blocks as well; I appreciated how much they expanded the runner-base during the online years. Favorites so far have been the down-to-the-wire Link's Awakening race and Frew's (final?) Vice City run.

Man, has GDQ ever been this behind schedule? A lot of the marquee runs have been pushed out of (North American) prime time and into the wee hours of the morning, and we currently have daily recaps, usually scheduled for 9 or 10PM, now scheduled for 2AM.

I know our boy Lieb has seen this, because he's in the comments, but this story about a runner faking his live GDQ run and then confessing to it in the fucking weirdest way is pretty fun. I like this game and had planned to watch the run at some point. Too bad it's been pulled. I mean, I get it, of course it's been pulled, but too bad. kotaku.com/metal-gear-rising-revengeance-sgdq-2022-speedrun-fake-1849144004Edit: Oh, and the whole line of people saying this is because he's Russian (or Georgian?) and that this is some kind of political statement or hit job against GDQ ... I dunno, I think they guy's just crazy and wanted to go out explosively. I think the weird ass confession was always part of the plan. It's like those "bad on purpose" acts on America's Got Talent who want to get three X's, because how they respond to that is the act they actually came to perform.

I watched the main, non-cheating run--which was impressive!--live, but must have wandered off to make dinner during the DLC run, because I don't remember either the "world record" or that bizarre rant. I can believe "bad on purpose," I can believe "manic episode," I can believe "knew he was going to get caught so he tossed out a bunch of semi-comprehensible bullshit to try to make his cheating look noble." I don't know, man, speedrunners are weird.

It's taken over 3 months - most of which I spent playing either Elden Ring or some older games I've already beaten a bunch of times - but I'm finally starting to "get" Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Despite by all appearances being a Borderlands game, the feel has never sat with me right. In particular, guns feel so much weaker in this game than in previous BL games. You get by, but you never feel like you're shredding through the mobs like you should be. (And one downside of the more fantastical monster designs vs. the humanoids of prior games is that critical headshots are much less reliable and harder to score.)
But then I realized the incompatibility with my playstyle. I tend to glom onto one strong weapon and stick with it until I find a stronger version of what is generally the same weapon. I rarely put any stock into elemental attacks or synergies between guns. I just wanna be sniper guy or assault rifle guy, etc. It helps that I never dipped too far into the endgame. I'd play far enough into its NG+ equivalents to max my character, but I wouldn't keep going past that.
Turns out, that's why I wasn't doing any damage. Tiny Tina's is balanced much more heavily toward exploiting elemental weaknesses. It was useful in prior games, but you could always get around it with headshots. Here though, if you're not using the right kind of element on the right kind of health bar (armor, shield, bone, flesh), you are really going to come up short. Finally embracing this, and keeping a golf bag of different elemental weapons on hand, the combat started to feel right almost instantly.
20 levels and maybe 10 hours in, the game is finally starting to get fun.
