Started replaying Dragon Age 2 after beating Origins and a mess of DLCs for that game. Had a moment of "Why did I hate that emo elf guy last time I played? He seems pretty cool. Oh that's why I hated him..." as soon as I recruited him.

seeing a lot of posts today billing Itsuno as "the Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma Guy" which kind of sells his career short. this video below gives some pretty good insight into the scale of his influence

Crypt Custodian rules. It's a combat-focused isometric metroidvania made by the one-man development team behind Islets and Sheepo, which are also both very good. This is his best game to date, and I'd say it's a must play for any fans of isometric action games like Bastion, Hyper Light Drifter, Unsighted, and especially Death's Door. What Crypt Custodian has on all of these games, even absolute classics like Bastion, is the feel of the combat. Movement feels so good in this game. I love how you get both a jump and a dodge, and both can be used to avoid strikes and projectiles. I like its approach to the "charm" system. This feature, a stock standard in indie action games today in which you have a wide selection of unique doodads to equip for bonuses and abilities, but you're limited on the number you can equip, either by total slots or a total charm "value" (like Hollow Knight). Crypt Custodian's is exactly like Hollow Knight's, except you can buy additional slots/points, for cheap, and with no limit. If you want to grind the cash and put in the time, you can eventually equip every charm at the same time. It's fun. I'd say the game is player friendly like that just in general. Some tough bosses, a couple bullet hell sequences, but generally much more chill than this genre tends to be (on Normal difficulty). It's just a good time.
Game completion time: 14 hr, 85% completion.
Here's a trailer. I really can't recommend it enough.

I just finished off the Super Mario RPG remake. Having never finished the original since it was always a copy I rented it was nice to finally do so. Overall a pretty well done remaster as with most Nintendo stuff, definitely some quality of life improvements and just a fun little ride. Now to sell my copy

Beat Dragon Age 2 and started in on Inquisition. Hate Solas so much. Last time he tricked me into thinking he was chill until the endgame but I know his lore now so most of the time I'm just hating him and seeing if there are any clues to his true identity that I missed because why would I have guessed he was a god and not just an elf supremacist wizard that looked like Ian MacKaye.

FFXVI and God of War coming to PC the same week is a bit much. Fortunately I don't have the money right now, so I can wait for all the launch jitters to work themselves out before I eventually grab them on sale. I did pick up The Plucky Squire and plan to start that tomorrow.

I do NOT recommend The Plucky Squire, even though I think it's a cool game, and I'm glad to have played it.
I think I land about the same place as the game site reviewers have, only for different reasons. I've seen myriad complaints about the game's limited scope (agreed), linearity (agreed), and iffy controls (disagreed, the game plays just fine), but weirdly I haven't crossed paths with the most obvious complaint that I, a 40 year-old man, have with the game: it's too kiddie. From the story to the creature designs to the simplicity of the puzzle solving, I could never get past that back of the head itch that this was a game for kids. Not "all ages", the way a top-down Zelda game with a similar art style and mechanics somehow manages to be, but specifically for kids. I'm going to introduce it to my two for sure.

Inevitably, I did indeed (well, am indeed) playing Tears of the Kingdom but I assume that is going to be very rapidly interrupted by Echoes of Wisdom this week.

Tell you what I DO recommend though: Minishoot' Adventures.
This is a top-down bullet hell twin-stick shooter metroidvania in which you pilot a little spaceship and explore a dangerous planet in search of your friends. It wears the MV label proudly: you almost always have access to multiple paths to explore, but true progress is ultimately gated by your abilities. You can't get through those rocks without the powered up cannon, you can't get over that gap without the dash, etc. And while those gates do exist, I'd say the openness is one of the game's strengths. It's not a huge map or anything - the game is overall slight, I bet I could complete a second play through in under 4 hours - but it is riddled with secrets and hidden passageways, and you often feel rewarded for taking that time to explore, for saving the required progression for last and investigating the crannies first. More currency, more upgrades. It's also pleasantly light on story. It has one, but it doesn't spend a lot of time talking at you. You get right into the gameplay, and that's where it keeps you. The game has character, but it doesn't have any characters. It's "president kidnapped by ninjas" level storytelling, and that's great!
Mechanically it feels fantastic. The ship is responsive, and it really delivers on the raw twitch satisfaction of shmups and bullet hells. I'm positively terrible at bullet hells, so I admit I played on the easiest setting, and I'm happy for it. I died a few times, but I didn't struggle. It also has some great quality of life decisions that I wish all metroidvanias would adopt: - Loot/currency is collected automatically from any distance. You don't have to equip some kind of "magnet" ability. - You can respec infinitely and at any time, even mid-battle. The only thing that's kinda weird about this one is that it kinda trivializes the races, for which you can quickly and freely respec to all speed and boost, then back to weapons after you've won the race. But ... that's good! That's just you playing video games. - For later game, you can eventually buy an item that shows you the general location of everything you've missed, for the 100% hounds out there.
Needless to say my review is glowing. I loved this game. I will play through it again. Not expensive, not super long, just a nice way to spend a couple sessions.
(For some reason this trailer shows a ton of racing footage. The racing is a really small, optional part of this game.)

Beat Dragon Age: Inquisition last night. Made Dorian and Iron Bull boyfriends. Killed that Corphillus fuck. Got gay married. Told Solas to fuck off. Lost an arm. Threw a book on the ground...I'M AN ADULT! Everyone had a happy ending except for the fact that Vivienne somehow became the Pope even though I intentionally left the "Support Vivienne in the campaign for Pope" War Table quest unfinished because I beat the game before years ago and she was the Pope then and I knew how bad it turned out. Formed a super secret no dorks allowed version of the Inquisition in a basement.
Anyway here's rankings of the Dragon Age: Inquisition companions.
1. Sera ❤️ 2. Iron Bull 3. Dorrian 4. Cassandra 5. Varric 6. Blackwall 7. Cole 8. Vivienne 9. Solas
Now I guess I just have to wait a couple weeks for the new one to actually get released. Kind of bummed I timed it poorly. Would have liked to have finished this one and then had next to no waiting for the 4th one.

I ONLY GOT AROUND TO IT EARLIER THIS YEAR] he takes half your arm off because otherwise you're going to explode. But it is his fault in the first place.

Yeah that's why I was kind of careful how worded it. Like I don't think he literally takes your arm at all. It looks like the arm's still attached when he leaves at the end but he caused neon green glowing shit to be in my hand via machinations and that ultimately resulted in Lady Trevelyan winding up in with one less knifin' arm.

Figured it was a bug (and also that he magically cut my arm off).

The first time I played it back in 2015 or whenever it was I was of the mind that he turned it stone and then the Inquisitor just had Iron Bull or whoever hack off the rock part from the part that was still flesh off camera. I mean there's a whole-ass stone menagerie of Qunari and his eyes do the same weird thing when he "fixes" your arm that they did when he turned that lady Qunari into stone before you started talking with him. This time playing on a computer with a "good" graphics card as opposed to a PS4 that seemed like it was having a heck of a time rendering things it kind of looks like the arm has Avengers Endgame "Mister Stark I don't feel so good..." lines coming off of it as Solas leaves so maybe it just dissolved.

the trailer for the hades 2 update dropped, including what i assume is the overworld act 4 boss.
athena and dionysius are now accounted for but no sign of ares. my guess for act 3 boss would have been athena who's "testing" us, a powered-up ariadne who's in Olympus to take revenge on athena or ares who's having a gay old time with all the war going on and doesn't want it to stop. i'm still guessing it will be ares but i also think maybe supergiant won't ever use an Olympian as a boss.

So I could do with some Switch game recommendations that aren't Mario Kart, Zelda-related, or Hades-related (because those are all done / underway / upcoming). Suggestions gratefully received!

Are you familiar with the basic premise of the Pikmin series? You play a tiny alien guy who commands a bunch of timy plant-like beings called Pikmin as you attempt to repair your ship after crash-landing (or help your company get out of debt adter returning to the planet in the second game). You have to fight hostile wildlife and solve puzzles to collect the items needed to complete your mission, most of which look suspiciously like everyday junk that might be lying around on Earth. The games look great, the ones released before the Switch all have been remastered, and it doesn’t really matter which game you start with (I’ve actually only ever played the second game, but it an all time favorite). I’d recommend lookinf up a bit of gameplay first, to see if it’s the sort of thing you might like, but yeah, there’s a recommendation, I guess.

Playing Dragon Age: Veilguard. There's a random NPC that looks like he's a member of 70s rock combo, Boston and I love it.

Excellent remakes / remasters of both Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are Switch exclusive. Then there are the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, of course, which are very affordable. There are six in total, though if you haven't played them before (meaning no nostalgia points), then I only recommend IV and VI.

Hmmm, do you mean Switch exclusives, or games that work really well on Switch? Re: the former category, I like Splatoon, Fire Emblem (particularly Three Houses), and Mario + Rabbids (particularly Sparks of Hope). And of course there's Mario Odyssey, if you haven't played it already. Re: the latter, Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Into the Breach, Balatro, and Stardew Valley are all ideal for pick-up-and-play. Basically any highly regarded indie title I buy on Switch or wait until it's inevitably released on Switch if it hasn't already. There's also a Switch port of Persona 4 Golden, which I highly recommend.

Valve just released an update for Half-Life 2 that includes developer commentary for the base game. The commentaries they included for the later releases as part of the Orange Box are some of my favorite things ever. I have other things I want to be playing, but this has just moved to the top of my list. And, for those few people who want to play HL2 and somehow still don't own it, the game is now free on Steam. Forever.
Also, I'm nominally interested in the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, but not at the full sixty bucks. I never played the original, so I have no nostalgia for it. On the other hand, I'm very excited for the remake of DQ1 next year. Hopefully that'll be cheaper since it's so much less game. Though, I do worry about the product feeling cheap or underbaked, considering how much they've hyped the DQ3 remake, and then quietly said, "oh, yeah, we're also doing the first two. Those will come out later, I guess."
