People keep talking about Dragon Age: Veilguard or whatever it’s called. Can somebody please tell me what the controversy is about and whether this is good or bad? I’ve never played any of these games or any of the Mass Effects, or any other games by that studio. The only negative stuff I’ve heard is that some folks dislike the art style which I don’t really get because it’s not like the series had some consistent art style between any of the earlier games anyway and that the combat is more action-RPG based than it was in past games. I don’t know if either of these are “controversies” but those are the two criticisms I’ve seen. I think the reason you see people talking about it is because people have been waiting for it for like a decade and it’s release is finally on the horizon. As someone that loves this franchise I’m stoked even though I’m bad at action-RPGs. Like I’ll figure out how to parry or dodge attacks in real time if it means I’ve got another half-elf dating sim/hero’s journey set in that world.

Yeah I haven't heard any controversies really, the only the worries from development were the fact that they were making it more live service then backed off from it and restarted?
I'm a long time fan and looking forward to this a lot even if it's probably more action-y of action rpg than I'd prefer in my ideal world.

Very close to wrapping up Persona 3 Reload--grinded (ground?) the reaper a few times and fused my endgame personas in preparation for (I'm assuming) the final gauntlet of bosses. As I said earlier, I'm impressed with the story and with how the social links all reinforce the central theme--something along the lines of accepting that grief/loss/setbacks/change are inevitable but still pushing on regardless. This in clear contrast to 5, whose central message of "ummm...rebellion is good?" grew increasingly muddled and convoluted by the end. (I don't remember a whole lot of 4's story; I need to replay that one.) Character-wise, I think the ensemble is strong, even if many individual characters aren't as memorable as either 4's or 5's. Koromaru is the far superior "mascot" character, however--not the least because he can't fucking talk. Persona 3's endgame is where the "first draftiness" of the life sim elements really assert themselves, despite Reload's attempts to jazz things up a bit with pseudo-social links for male cast members, etc. You can and do just...run out of things to do. You can max out social stats maybe 60% of the way through the game--and in fact the game encourages you to do so, as many of the romanceable characters require max stats before you can start up their social links--and your few nighttime social links peter out long before the end as well. So for the last quarter of the game, particularly at night, my options have been 1) work a part-time job for chump change and a wasted social stat boost, 2) grind Tartarus for levels/materials I don't need, or 3) I don't know, go to bed I guess? This is pretty jarring compared to 4 and 5, which were much better at giving you options and decisions and tradeoffs and shit to do right up to the end.

A new trailer for The Plucky Squire came out a few months ago, but I'm only just now seeing it. I've been very interested in this game since the first trailer dropped a couple years ago. Finally coming out later this year, I understand.
This game looks rad as hell. Kiddie, sure, but so much more interesting than that new Zelda game.

The long anticipated remake to Riven finally dropped today. Might pick it up to give me something else to do when I need a break from Elden Ring DLC.

Beyond Good and Evil: 20th Anniversary is relatively cheap. I think I'll pick it up as I loved it back in the day though I imagine the controls have aged poorly.

I've been debating getting a Steam deck for a while, and they're on sale, so I was thinking about pulling the trigger, probably on the 512 GB LED version (it's $381). Anyone have any advice/experience with them?

I played this visual novel game called Our Life that really wants you to fall in love with a childhood friend. The whole time I thought this friend was an annoying little shit and resisted any romantic connection. Then at the epilogue they made me feel terrible by saying "Cove was later diagnosed as on the spectrum".

It's like me and Krem in Dragon Age: Inquisition where I spent half the game thinking they were a bad-ass warrior lady with an undercut but then it's revealed they a transdude and I feel like shit in real life for misgendering a fictional character in a video game just because there weren't any sort of context clues before the reveal.

I don't follow it closely enough to realize it was in minneapolis. I might have gone.

Unsurprisingly, my response to FF7 Rebirth has been equal parts "hey, this is fun" and "...for fuck's sake another mini game?" The story is, if anything, less coherent than the original (and Remake), but at least it feels less padded and wheel-spinny than Remake, thanks to having actual places to visit if nothing else. In terms of knowing what the fuck is going on with the overarching narrative? No luck, and from what I've read of the reviews it doesn't look like many answers are forthcoming. Oh boy is this a (gated) open world game. If you hate clearing icons off a map for the sake of clearing icons off a map this might not be for you. Gorgeous looking though.

Spent $8 and got all the Dragon Age games on Steam so I guess I'm going to replay them all before that Veilguard thing comes out. I think a long enough time has passed since my initial run through the series that I'm not going to feel quite so beholden to (or even really remember) the choices I made the last time around. So this summer I guess it's going to be a return to bigass swords chopfuckin' the shit out of Hamburger Helper Wizards and high adventures with lesbian elves and Brodude Heromen for me.

I've been playing a bit of Enshrouded. It's in Early Access on Steam. It is so far almost exactly the type of game I've been wanting that's a combination of a base building game like Minecraft, but with better RPG elements. The world is large but hand crafted, not procedurally generated. You place down hearth flames and can build bases around them.

The last game I played in the Zelda series was The Minish Cap, which was lots of fun but which I never quite got round to finishing. Both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are up next (still not sure if I'll do TotK) but I need to get a Wii-U or GameCube, neither of which I currently own.

Lol, I think that was my experience with Minish Cap back in the day when it was a new-ish game (as in it was lots of fun but I never quite got around to finishing it). It’s honestly weird and annoying that neither Wind Waker nor Twilight Princess have a Switch remaster. Wind Waker may be my all time favorite game, though I’m sure that’s largely a function of nostalgia. I think it truly does up really well though.

Finished Breath Of The Wild now. I'll do a proper write-up at some point but yeah, awesome game let down by a very slightly underwhelming final boss. Mostly adored it though!

Lego Marvel Super Heroes
There's a Lego dude walking around Lego Central Park who wears a blue suit and has a swept-back bouffant hairdo that makes him look like Donald Trump. Any time we see him, my wife delights in beating him up.

I do not recommend Biogun, a new shooting-focus Metroidvania that exited early access a couple weeks ago. I actually think it's super fun, for the hour or so I was able to play it, but I have not been able to get the game to restart. It's busted. Nothing happens on launch. Cannot recommend.
I'm really here to post my anger about Steam rejecting my refund request three times now (and I've already gone back in with a fourth). The lack of appeals process or any opportunity to escalate is frustrating me.
Why do they reject my request? Because, again, the game is busted. After several cycles of nothing happening on launch, I followed some advice in the Steam forums and tried to launch the .exe directly as an administrator. This didn't work either the first couple tries, but for no reason I can detect, it worked the third time. The game finally played. I played it, I liked it, and then I shut it down because I had other stuff to do. I didn't realize at the time that it never fully closed. The window closed, and the application even disappeared from Task Manager (which I had open because I was keeping an eye when it did nothing on launch the first several tries), but what I didn't notice is that Steam still showed the game as "playing" and continued to rack up playtime. I'd walked away from my computer at that point. When I finally noticed, I force stopped the game, but Steam now reported a playtime of 11 hours.
Therefore, Steam is rejecting my refund request, because I show playtime in excess of 2 hours. Explaining all this in my refund request has not helped.
(It's only sixteen bucks, and honestly if they ever patch it so it works consistently on my machine, I'll be happy to still have it. I want to play it, but I'm annoyed by the technical issue and then moved to anger by the dumb situation it's put me in regarding a refund.)

In the game Wylde Flowers, a farming sim, your character can buy and make booze. There's no way to drop items from your inventory, so at one point I had my character drink like 14 drinks to clear them from my inventory.
The next day another character showed up and took me to what was clearly an AA meeting.
