Over the course of six months (90+ hours of which was actual game playing time - I took it slow) I have replayed Dragon Age: Origins. I swear this is the last time, as I've played it in just about every combination of character, class and play style possible. This time, a cunning-based Dalish Elf rogue archer. If you'll forgive the smuggery: the problem with this game is that once you understand its mechanics, and know everything it's going to throw at you, it's just not difficult enough. On Nightmare difficulty the origin story is quite challenging, especially for a squishy (Shale was correct) rogue, but by the end I just felt embarrassed for the Archdemon. Poor thing got slaughtered so quickly it didn't even manage to summon any minions. In my one and only playthrough as a dwarven noble, fighting Flemeth in her dragon form was FAR more difficult than the archdemon. It took me 30-40 minutes to whittle her down! It was a FANTASTIC fight, and once I got to the archdemon and it took me less than five minutes I was a bit disappointed.

if this isn't completely fake then tekken 8 is the most impressive game of this gen so far imo I guess I should finish off some of the characters I'd been meaning to play from Tekken 7. The president of Poland needs to get out there and kick some Mishima ass.

Apparently T8 is being built from the ground up so I'm guessing a) it won't be out until 2024 and b) it'll have a smaller launch roster so no need to rush too much lol. Lidia will probably be launch roster, I guess.

1. Thanks, you jerks, now I need to replay DA:O again, which always leads to a replay of BG2 as well.
2. Just played through the first four chapters of The Long Dark, which I really liked, though a couple of quests irritated me enough to cheat my way through them.
3. Up next in Guild Wars 2 is getting the Skyscale, which is a daunting prospect.

I played The Long Dark ages ago when it was still in Early Access, and there were no chapters yet. I survived something like a year on easy or medium difficulty, then died because of a goddamn glitch that got me stuck behind invisible walls in a canyon area. Other than that, it was fun. I tried the "escape from the bear attack" several times and couldn't survive more than 10 minutes.

The fights are awkward and so is aiming your gun, and I couldn't stand having to fight them off every five minutes when walking or running somewhere. So I used a trainer that had a "fly mode" so I could get from one place to the other more quickly.

Suikoden remasters! Wow...unexpected. Between them and the Front Mission remasters/re-releases/re-whatevers that got announced last week 2023 is shaping up to be a year where I play a whole lot of PSOne era JRPGs for no good reason.

Should I play the popular video game NieR: Automata, when it gets ported to the Nintendo Switch next month? People say it is a good video game. Is it a good video game? I think it's a good game that is overrated. It is worth playing, but it is not a masterpiece or one of the greatest games ever made as you sometimes see claimed.
Reasons it is good: it's a spectacle. It's fuckin' weird as shit. It's really easy to recommend the game on this point alone, because for all the reasons I could list that N:A isn't great, there are so many individual moments that are. It's the kind of thing you'd want anyone to experience at least once, from a gaming literacy standpoint. Also, it's pretty fun. The combat is kinda simple, I think, but it still satisfies, and looks great while it does so. LOTS of game too. The story is a decent length, and you kind of have to play it through multiple times to get the whole story.
Reasons it is not a masterpiece or may not be worth playing: the open world is unique but kinda boring, like the side missions aren't fun. It's a grind. (grain of salt: I am very anti open world and/or busy work in games. I want to always be advancing the objective.) The fact that you HAVE to replay the game multiple times through to get the whole story is a potential negative depending on how much time you have to play. N:A is not tight. It's not respectful of your time. Finally, I would personally worry about performance on the Switch. Last gen hardware struggled with it on console.
To be certain, my answer is a yes. Nier: Automata may not live up to the hype, but it is a hell of a thing that should stand up every bit as much today as when it first came out.

Do I need to have played Dragon Garb, and Dragon Garb 2, and Dragon Garb 3 and NieR 1 to understand what Blindfold Woman's and everyone else's deal is, or can you play this game in the series without having played any of the others and still understand what's going on?

Nope. Automata is a good starting point. I had played the first Drakengard and the original Nier, but both so long ago that it wasn't even obvious to me that they were in the same universe. They're not closely related at all. Edit: I mean obviously Nier is in the same universe as Nier: Automata, but it doesn't feel like a continuation of that story or anything. It's its own thing.

God, how long is Pathfinder Kingmaker? I'm at like 130 hours and I only have 3 counties annexed. I really need to cut back on the old save scumming trick.
Also, this game really brings to the fore the colonialist and imperialist roots of the standard DnD-esque setting. "Exterminate native peoples so we can seize their land and resources for ourselves" is the explicit goal of the game, after all. Much easier to ignore this subtext in a typical adventure campaign since most players players are at the "exterminate" part of the equation and the colonizing thing is usually just implied in the background.

NieR is great though and you should play it anyway. (Well, maybe not great, but it's certainly a memorable experience. And apparently the not-so-great jankiness of the gameplay got fixed in the remaster).

The more I consider it though, the jankiness of the controls in the original may have added to its disconcerting, "something is terribly wrong here but I don't know what" atmosphere. So even if the remaster doesn't have a Switch release but the original does, I'd recommend it anyway.

I always underestimate C's love for Splatoon--I casually mentioned Splatoon 3 had come out and within an hour we were playing. I've seen a few articles lately wondering why Splatoon 3 sales are so high and why Splatoon in general is just so gosh darn popular, and I don't really see the mystery. I mean, my spouse and I wouldn't normally touch a competitive online shooter with a ten foot pole and yet here we are, merrily inking away--for the next month or so, anyway, before we get bored with it.
I had been planning on picking up DioField Chronicle this weekend, but there have been enough "...eh" reviews that I'm unwilling to pull the trigger. Still, I'm itching to play some new RPG-ish thing on my Switch. I though maybe I'd try breaking into the Trails series--the one remaining "must play" JRPG series I haven't touched--with Trails from Zero, but I misremembered the release date. I don't want to wait until Tuesday, I want to play something now.

The online Switch store was selling a bundle of their ports of the Bioshock trilogy for $9.99, so I picked that up and started replaying the first one. I dunno if that deal pertains to just the US, or how much longer it’s on for, but seems like a solid deal to me. Thus far the original seems to run pretty well on the Switch.

On the off-chance anyone is playing Guild Wars 2, copper-fed Salvage O'Matics are on sale in the Gem Store. They're one of the best quality-of-life items you can get in the game so it's worth it.

I own Live A Live now on the Switch. It's wild to finally be playing an official English localized version of a game I read about in Nintendo Power in the mid 90s twenty-someodd years after the fact.

I installed Star Trek Online and played it for about two hours before uninstalling it. Yep, typical bog-standard 12-year-old MMORPG shit with shooting phasers at Borg on a ship, then shooting phasers and torpedoes at Borg in space. Zzzzz...
I was really hoping for something interesting, but they've taken a franchise known for action AND thoughtful content and made it action only.

I reinstalled Guild Wars 2 after ten years, and was able to have customer service restore my old account that was previously locked due to hacking attempts.
Now I remember what made it so much fun compared to all other MMOs I've played before or since:
(Almost) No running back and forth for quests. Most actions you need to perform are events related to NPCs with a Heart Meter to fill, and it tells you exactly what they want you to do and where they are as soon as you're nearby.
No fighting over kills / kill-stealing. If a bunch of people fight the same monster and do damage, everyone gets at least SOME credit and possibly loot.
EVENTS - Bigger events show up on the map with clear markers, and anyone can assist within the alotted time. I helped out with the second half of an "escort the caravan" event before continuing on my way.
Leveling up automatically gives you your new skills/ability slots, no having to travel back to the main city to train.
There's more, and I don't even have the expansions yet.

Let's say someone builds a video game just for you. All the elements you most want in a game. What would it look like?
* Immersive, long RPG with a main quest and plenty of side quests. Some silly side quests, some scary, just lots of them. You can choose to remove a side quest from your quest journal though.
* Romance options with quests for each romancable character, poly relationships possible, and without any grimdark "woe is me I'm a Tragedy Elf" romances. Think Iron Bull.
* Resource gathering and supply management.
* Strongholds complete with upgrades and kingdom management.
* You can meet animals and they come live in your stronghold. You must be able to name them.
