I'm only good at the annoying Splatoon weapons. I'm traditionally a brusher, but it was starting to give me carpal tunnel, so I switched to Bloblobber.

Obviously when you're playing games for an audience, dying is a matter of deep shame. I didn't die a single time in FF7 classic, only died to the final boss in FF8, and also never died in FF9. FF10 though. The goddamn Spectral Keeper got me ... twice! And I know Yunalesca is next and remember having trouble with that one too. I'd been doing some grinding in between play sessions with my kids, because even I'll admit it's boring to watch since fights in FFX are so slow (if you insist on cycling the characters every fight). So I thought I was pretty well ahead of the curve, but the monsters in the last few areas feel so strong, and I'm wondering if I used "flee" and eventually "no encounters" so much that I'm weak.

Welp, add Spiritfarer to the very short list of video games that have made me cry.

Finally broken 200 hours in Pathfinder: Kingmaker and there's still obviously more game waiting to be played. And I didn't even get the DLC with the endless dungeon and where you play through the backstory of a quest, mainly because I could tell there was already enough content in the base game.
This is a lot of hours, but according to the game calendar my character has been doing their thing for only 2 years now. That's an insanely short amount of time considering how much land I've cleared of monsters and bandits. I've probably killed tens of thousands of men, women, and monsters by this point. I think Genghis Khan killed like 3 people for every square foot he conquered but I may have old Temujin beat on this matter. In-game my character probably has a reputation as a bloodthirsty psychopath.
Also, I looked it up and apparently there was a gnome I should have been able to recruit. I didn't know that guy was supposed to be in my party; as I recall, when I encountered him he was being mouthy so I told him to piss off. Hope I didn't screw up the ending because of that.

Dude, Yunalesca was a pushover. I remembered that there was a gimmick to the fight: she frequently zombies the whole party, then uses Mega Death which kills all living party members, effectively punishing you for remedying the zombie status. But that's all it was. Weak attacks, and few of them. A long fight due to her 3 phases, but I never came close to dying or feeling like I had to play it just right like with Spectral Keeper or Seymour Flux. It was a relief, honestly, because I didn't want to have to rewatch that cutscene with the kids.
I'm finally at the pre-ending grind. Monster arena, celestial weapons, power leveling, the remaining aeons. Gonna be good.

Only tangentially related to what you said, but as a kid, I gave up on Kingdom Hearts because of how many times I had to watch the “She won’t wake up…” cutscene while trying to win the boss fight where you try to kill fellow child-soldier Riku. So I can appreciate not wanting to watch a Final Fantasy cutscene multiple times.

Been playing the first Trails of Cold Steel and enjoying it. The story is typical JRPG nonsense (built upon a whole extended universe of JRPG nonsense spanning 12 installments and counting), but intriguing enough to keep me going. The combat system actually has a small learning curve--in that it at least punishes you for mashing attack every turn--but is fairly easy and enjoyable to master. It features an FF7/materia-style system of character customization, but if you equip everyone with the same set of spells you're Going to Have a Bad Time, as the emphasis is much more on equipping your attackers with effects that allow them to stagger enemies and delay turns (ala MegaTen) with maybe one or two characters acting as mage specialists. Positioning--rare in a turn-based JRPG--is also pretty crucial. It's not revolutionary by any means but it's enough of a challenge to keep me engaged.

I know the Personas have it. Final Fantasy XIII. Octopath.
I don't like it very much. I think it makes regular encounters take too long. So I guess I'm asking, who's to blame?

Well, there's a difference between games like Octopath where there's a stun meter that incrementally fills, and Persona, where exploiting an enemy's weakness immediately rewards you with an extra turn (and vice versa). The former can get tedious, I grant you, but I've always found the latter snappy and reasonably strategic in that you can figure out ways to chain turns together so that battles end in a few seconds with no damage taken. Cold Steel is somewhere in between--there are no stun gauges, but successfully pushing enemies down the turn order is partially RNG-dependent.

Wow. I remembered that the Magus Sisters were powerful, but I'd forgotten just what an instant win button they are. The final bosses are trivialized when you've got a aeon that can drop five 9's on almost anything, and that's not even its overdrive. So yeah: Sin, the final Seymour, and Jecht all went down in a single round per phase. Not very dramatic, but me and the kids have been playing this one for something like 5 months now. I was happy to be done with it.
(Credit, I guess, to FF9 for not having some absolutely broken thing that is relatively easy to obtain. FF7 has Knights of Round, FF8 has Aura and Holy War, FFX has the Magus Sisters ... FF9 is not a hard game by any means, but it's not as easily borked either.)
My 4yo son, who is hyperactive and hardly watched any of it except for the boss fights, and even then spent the whole time running around the room, had the audacity to ask when we'd be playing the next Final Fantasy. Like, why, dude? You don't watch them!
For real taking a break from the long form RPGs now. Not sure where we'll head next.

Further adventures in GRiD: Autosport: Switching to a racing wheel was more of a learning curve than I was expecting. There were a couple of times where I had a dispiriting feeling of making absolutely no progress at all. But then I got a better handle on the proper touch to apply on the brake pedal and accelerator, and finally, at the end of a what was for me a long session where I managed to avoid losing focus or getting overly nervous towards the end of races like I have a bad habit of doing, I secured my first podium finish with the racing wheel. Very small accomplishment given that I’m just playing a generally well-reviewed simcade for the Switch on the middle level of AI difficulty, but I was extremely happy with this very small accomplishment.

Have been wanting to play Deathloop, but I was never quite happy with the price. It's the premier game in this month's Humble Choice monthly subscription, so opting in for one month would be $12. That was low enough for me, but I was procrastinating on actually purchasing the subscription. Then Humble sent me a coupon to get 1 month for only $9.
Nice! I now have Deathloop and 7 other games I will probably never play for nine bucks. Just have to remember to cancel.

I also want to play it but I'm pretty sure my PC can't run it and I think it's not on PS4? Too bad because it's 27 bucks right now which is the highest price I'd pay for it.

I'm shocked, but after updating several settings I can play The Outer Worlds without getting motion sickness. I don't think I can play for hours at a time still but I can get a good hour and a half in and only feel slightly dizzy.

I never realized that Humble Choice, their monthly subscription dealy, includes access to a game library as well. Not a whole lot in there, and even less that I want to play, but I did see A Hat in Time. That's a really highly regarded 3D platformer collect-athon game that I've long wanted to play. Maybe I'll find time before cancelling.

Unless they massively overhaul the gameplay a la RE2 -> REMake 2, I don't think I'm interested in playing the Silent Hill 2 remake. I loved the game back in the day, but I don't know if I want to play something like that anymore.
I'm very interested in watching it be played, though. Can't wait for the speedruns.

Meanwhile, the REm4ke, while looking good, I guess, is also looking dark as shit.
This is the day. This is what the village is like during the day. Can't wait to (not) see what it looks like after you find Ashley and it's night time and raining.

I started Deathloop and had one decent session, but I haven't been able to get the game to start again since. When I try to start it in Steam, it tanks my computer and ultimately does nothing. So, my current opinion of Deathloop is that it doesn't work. I might mess with it more at some point, because I enjoyed what little I've played. Love the world design and combat felt pretty good.

We officially started prepping my wife's old laptop for our daughter to join us in playing Guild Wars 2! While we were downloading the client and updating the laptop we created an account for her and had her make her first character. SO excited to be able to play together as a family like this! (GW2 is perfect for this because it auto-adjusts your level to whatever area you're in.)
Now we can ALL ignore chores to play video games at the same time!
EDIT - We started playing last night! Yay! But now we need to get a new mouse for the laptop so BGirl doesn't have to use keyboard to turn around, it's really awkward!

Twitch is doing a thing where if you gift two subscriptions to any streamer (doesn't even have to be the same one, I don't think?) you get a code for three free months of Xbox Game Pass For PC. It'd be nice if I had more time to game on my PC... even when I have the energy to play video games, I usually end up playing on the couch.

Over the course of six months (90+ hours of which was actual game playing time - I took it slow) I have replayed Dragon Age: Origins. I swear this is the last time, as I've played it in just about every combination of character, class and play style possible. This time, a cunning-based Dalish Elf rogue archer. If you'll forgive the smuggery: the problem with this game is that once you understand its mechanics, and know everything it's going to throw at you, it's just not difficult enough. On Nightmare difficulty the origin story is quite challenging, especially for a squishy (Shale was correct) rogue, but by the end I just felt embarrassed for the Archdemon. Poor thing got slaughtered so quickly it didn't even manage to summon any minions. In my one and only playthrough as a dwarven noble, fighting Flemeth in her dragon form was FAR more difficult than the archdemon. It took me 30-40 minutes to whittle her down! It was a FANTASTIC fight, and once I got to the archdemon and it took me less than five minutes I was a bit disappointed. I completely meant to reply to this with a clever and interesting post comparing things I really liked about DA:O with things that I thought weren't going so well in Amazon's The Rings of Power, but writing clever and interesting things takes a lot of effort so I never got around to it. My first time around against the Archdemon was the epic, frenetic slugfest it should be, though it's never been repeated in any playthrough since then. I've never had that much difficulty against Flemeth, but only because I've always fought the High Dragon first - which usually turns out to be the most difficult single boss fight of the game (and if I didn't use forcefield every time my tank gets grabbed, one I'd have to leave until much later in the game). Anyway, since then onto Wolfenstein: The New Order. Never played it before. Loved it. Who'da thought that B.J. Blazkowicz, predecessor of Doom Guy, could turn out to be a compelling protagonist?* Having spent many (many, many) a happy hour putzing around Skyrim and the Capital Wasteland, I love how Bethesda it all looks - though without all the glitches and needing to look up on the internet how a scripted event was supposed to happen. Flashes of Bethesda humour too, like the stuff with the elevators in the London Nautica building. The game does variation really well, in terms of levels in different settings, mixing up guns (or knives) and violence with quieter bits where it's more exploring and puzzle solving, and letting you have your favoured playstyle for the most part while still sometimes forcing you to mix it up between sneaking, or cover shooting or all out assault. And somehow they managed to throw in a sex scene that's simultaneously ugly, funny and a lovely bit of character work. A few minor flaws. The game's sense of unreality, though necessary for making it not unbearably grim (or completely tasteless), occasionally takes me out of it - like did Klaus just drive me from London to Berlin there? It makes a whole thing of Caroline's power armour suit, then never does anything with it. At the end of the prologue chapter where you're forced to make a choice on which supporting characters live and die, I don't think the game's earned it at that point. And the final boss fight at the end is so unfair (not the guy himself, just the fucking jets of flame everywhere) that I had to turn the difficulty down, which I hate. Overall, fucking great though, and I'll definitely replay it at some point. *Though one who reminds me of that old Onion "Our Dumb Century" article about how former members of the Russian Aristocracy are continuing, for the seventh straight year, to kill Grigoriy Rasputin. ("In later years, Rasputin was set on fire, dissolved in acid, boiled alive, flensed, fed molten lead, ground beneath the wheels of a freight train, thrown from the top of St Basil's Cathedral, impaled on sharpened stakes, buried under 10 tons of hot gravel, struck at high speeds by an automobile, strapped to the mouth of a great cannon which was then fired several times, bolted to the keel of an icebreaking ship which was repeatedly run aground, drawn and quartered, crucified, run through with a cavalry spear from bowel to gullet, vivisected and eviscerated. Furthermore, throughout the process, he was continually re-poisoned, re-stabbed and re-shot. The team expects Rasputin's death to take place no later than 1925").

I have no idea where to begin with finding ascended gear stuff. Does that become easier once the expansions are complete? I just started Path of Thorns, leveling up my glider and mastery skills in Verdant Brink.
