I poked around to see if there was a podcast thread somewhere but I didn't see one. Apologies if I'm like, breaking some kind of T.I. Rule here.
Basically, I've recently decided that I like listening to podcasts, especially in the car. I'd like to find some good ones I've never heard but boy, looking at podcasts is SO overwhelming and trying them out only to discard them has proven to be very time-consuming and kind of frustrating.
Here's what I'm listening to and enjoying right now:
Fat Man on Batman Judge John Hodgman NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour Stuff You Should Know This American Life
I love a good pop culture podcast and would like to find some good book-centric stuff in particular. I'll try anything that seems interesting though. Any suggestions?

Any Comedy Bang Bang with Paul F Tompkins or James Adomian is gold. For non-comedic podcasts, I'm a fan of On The Media, The Tobolowsky Files, and (if you're a word/grammar/language nerd) A Way with Words.

I don't know much about the podcast world, but I enjoyed Doug Stanhope's. They're appealingly sloppy interviews with colourful characters, and he gets some good stories out of them, and doesn't particularly foreground himself. Get to them through his website.

The only podcasts I listen to are WTF and Monday Morning Podcast. I feel like WTF's greatest days are behind it, but it's still worth listening to, and you should definitely check out the back catalog, he's done some of the best interviews in all of podcasting, in my opinion.
Monday Morning Podcast pretty much depends on whether or not you like Bill Burr. There's no frills at all, it's just him talking somewhat off the top of his head for an hour every week, so the quality really varies, but if you like Bill Burr, then you'll like this.

I feel like WTF's greatest days are behind it, but it's still worth listening to, and you should definitely check out the back catalog, he's done some of the best interviews in all of podcasting, in my opinion. His musician interviews are great. Not sure there's much more I want to know about the standup comedy boom in the 1980s-90s. Not sure what the Larry King thing was about but I guess I know why he threw it on for Thanksgiving: to contrast with the sparkling Dick Van Dyke interview a few weeks ago. All he got from Larry King were canned stories. And odd social habits. The JV Club podcast is a more specific attempt at mining adolescence, girl only. My current list: LeShow with Harry Shearer - old old standby. Goes to 11. TV-eh - all about Canadian TV issues which even VCandian newspapers don't care about. Subsidized culture spawns its own odd culture. The hosts don't seem to understand that networks in that situation make web sites for other people in the industry, not for viewers. And other quibbles. Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo, BBC film programme. They are two bickering loveables from red-brick universities. They don't like it if Naomi Watts cuts short and 10 minute interview by 90 seconds. Even if it's in a hotel room and they didn't even bother to show up in person. Left Right & Center, and other KCRW shows, news or music. Ariana Huffington left, Tony Blankely died, but it's still a good ole grudge match between Robert Sheer and anybody who believes the current shiny political B.S. Truth Dig. The same Robert Sheer's attempt to do Huff Post without celebrity gossip or shallow billionarism. Seems to be getting sparser.

I've only have heavily gotten into podcasts since I got a smartphone again, since downloading and putting them onto my (now ancient) ipod was too much of a hassle, even when using itunes. Also I find it extremely difficult to read while people are talking so I mostly listen to them while working on graphics or just messing around since my car doesn't have any auxiliary inputs Something I need to do is try and find some local ones, but finding RSS feeds is like pulling teeth, and also finding ones professional enough to even bother with. Also a giant fuck you if you only publish your shit through itunes or some proprietary flash player. I'm using podkicker, mostly because it keeps the files separate from the main system so the music app doesn't get all clogged up. The bad part is I have to wake the phone, input the pin, then find the app if it isn't immediately open, then press pause if someone tries to interrupt me. My talky podcasts:Ask Mr Bigs --I think it's defunct now, but basically it was where some guys cut up real phonecalls to work around a couple characters on a radio show. How Did This Get Made --I'm sure most of you are familiar with this. I've spent the past two months going through all of them; I keep going back and forth if I want to skip the mini-episodes, since sometimes they drag and yet there's still a couple gems in there. Shots Fired -- Hiphop news/interview. Left Earwolf, and still hasn't come back up yet. Tell Me Something I Don't Know -- mostly about graphic design and people talking about their careers, kinda boring, so I have to be in a certain mood for it. Untitled Kondabolu Brothers Podcast -- Featuring that non-rapper from Das Racist and his comedian brother. Just found it and I'm working my way through them. They do the recording themselves so it can sound pretty damn amateur. WTF -- I usually skip unless the person seems interesting to me. I hate how they all seem like they're four hours long. Yo Is this Racist -- The thing I really love about this is how short and to the point this is, even with the repetitive daily intros and outros. Music:
Starkillers Killer Radio -- funky house Mad Decent -- Connected to Diplo and Switch (the Major Lazor guys), pretty infrequent releases, my favorite recurring ones are the Luvstep ones by Flufftronix. Resident Advisor -- BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix -- I don't have a regular feed for these (british DMCA means they get taken down) so I mostly just mass download them from torrents or soundcloud at random. Also some artists like Skream & Benga will just post them on facebook so I feel especially non-guilty about downloading that way. Maximum Distortion -- recordings of local metal radio show (yes Virginia, there is a metal scene even in Utah) www.reverbnation.com/maximumdistortion/song/19136274-never-give-up-dont-ever

Any Comedy Bang Bang with Paul F Tompkins or James Adomian is gold. Seconded. Honestly, if it doesn't have one of those two, I generally don't bother to listen. I know a really awesome podcast about Survivor, though. It's called The Purple Rock. Very hipster. You've probably never heard of it.

I love a good pop culture podcast and would like to find some good book-centric stuff in particular. I'll try anything that seems interesting though. Any suggestions? Sure! I don’t think descriptions would be helpful, so I’ll just provide the subject. I always have them playing in the background when I’m relaxing or working at home, so I need a lot. S-tier Comedy Bang Bang (comedy) Jordan, Jesse, Go (comedy) The Cruncheons (video games) A-tier Bullseye (music) Improv 4 Humans (comedy) Insert Credit (video games) Player 1 Podcast (video games) Quiet; Panelologists At Work (comics) Recommended If You Like (comics) The Long Shot (comedy; they're still adjusting to losing Pepitone, so do the backlog) Topics (comedy) B-tier 1 Life Left (video games) 3 Percent Podcast (literature) Big Pop Fun (art) Blogging Heads (politics) Call Chelsea Peretti (comedy) Comic Books Are Burning In Hell (comics) Fitzdog Radio (comedy) Gameological In Stereo (video games) How Did This Get Made (movies) Issues, Et Cetera (religion) Inside Jobs (history) Judge John Hodgeman (comedy) Leicester Square Theater Podcast (comedy) Make It, Then Tell Everybody (comics) Mike And Tom Eat Snacks (food) Never Not Funny (comedy) Poetry Foundation Podcasts (literature) Retronauts (video games) Sklarbro Country (sports) Stop Podcasting Yourself (comedy) The Art Of Wrestling (theater/wrestling) The Comedy Button (comedy) The J.V. (comedy) You Had To Be There (comedy) I also used to listen to video game music podcasts before they died/I got more obscure taste than they did. In general, for literature podcasts, do public radio. The anglosphere, generally, shouldn’t be ignored. Australia has surprisingly good ones.

I have the vibe that "Ask Mr. Biggs" will do an episode this December because they did one last year. Maybe the guy/s behind it have to work more?

I dipped back into WTF for the first time in I don't know how long recently. Listened to the Pamela Adlon interview (what a beautiful mess she is), the thoroughly excellent Sam Simon interview, Thom Yorke, and then that was about it and needed a break again.

The Flop House and We Hate Movies for two sides of the bad movie coin pretty much take up my weeks. WTF on occasion. Splendid Table for cooking. Less and less so, Good Food. Recently finished the History of Rome, which is really great, but quite an undertaking (180 episodes or so). I picked up Mike Duncan's followup podcast Revolutions which is good if a bit dense at times.

A lot of the ones I like have been mentioned, but two that have not been brought up: Get Up on This: New pop culture discussions. Interesting guests and the hosts keep things moving pretty quickly. The Champs: Neal Brennan and Moshe Kasher interview (usually African-American) comedians and actors. Its damn near always hilarious, and they actually ask really difficult questions to the guests. The hosts are fairly insightful as well.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned, except my most favorite, Stop Podcasting Yourself.
Mental Illness Happy Hour is one I download if I know the guest or if the description or the AV Club write-up makes it sound interesting.
Book Fight is great if you like literature or creative writing (and now that I reread the original post--hey, you do!). I've more or less given up on pursuing creative writing in any big way, but I still like listening to the hosts talk about their progress, especially since Mike started NaNoWriMo.

Does anyone else find that podcasts--especially comedy podcasts--have declined in general in the last year or so? I used to listen to CBB, Doug Benson, and Sklarboro every week, but now they've all become more miss than hit to me. I think that the talent has spread too thin and the higher profile is turning some podcasts into regular old talk shows. Bang Bang/Death Ray, for instance, was a regular rotation of Tompkins, Adomian, Nick Kroll and Jon Daly at the beginning, and it had no higher intent than for comedians to crack each other up. Now everybody has his own podcast and half of the time the guest is a higher profile non-comedian or a "comedy legend" with something to plug. If I wanted that, I would watch Jimmy Kimmel. It's too bad that Podmass back in Zion has become a useless feature, because I really wish there was a reliable rundown to save me the wasted time of a bad podcast.

Listen Depending on Guest: - Doug Loves Movies - Who Charted
Will listen to sooner or later: - Besties (2/3 of MBMBaM with a focus on video Games) - Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (if they every release new ones) - Cracked Podcast

It does feel like the trend for a lot of shows, especially those I'd describe as having a semi-rigid format, is to move towards the interview-style show, which is unfortunate.

Hey, thanks for all the great responses! For now I've added the following to try:
Star Wars Minute My Brother, My Brother, and Me How Did This Get Made? Book Fight Quiet! Panelogists at Work Doug Loves Movies
I'll also dig through the WTF archives and pick out some interviewees who I'm particular interested in. I tend to binge on podcasts and then get bored and go looking for new ones so I copied all the recommendations to a file and will be looking at them again, I'm sure. Thanks!

If you like MBMBaM, you should check out Sawbones, the podcast that Justin McElroy does with his wife Sydney about medical history. Not as funny as MBMBaM (few things in life are), but surprisingly informative.
Also, listening to The Flop House has made listening to any other bad movie podcast difficult, though I do like We Hate Movies.
Read It and Weep tackles just about anything shitty (or at least batshit, a la Gozu or The Prisoner), be it a movie or book.

Comedy Bang Bang: Scott Aukerman's weekly comedy podcast. No further explanation necessary (I expect most people here will have heard of most of these podcasts. I've fallen way behind on this one, and it'll probably be months at least before I've caught up. Professor Blastoff: Tig Notaro and those two dudes' podcast about a bunch of comedians joking about science. I've only listened to a couple of these, but I intend on attempting to catch up in the near future. Puck Podcast: Weekly podcast on the NHL. The hosts are pretty knowledgeable, do a solid job of covering the entire league, and are generally considerably less unbearable than most sports analysts in terms of being a bunch of asshole-bros. Slate's Lexicon Valley: Fascinating though currently infrequent podcast about language. This American Life: Ira Glass' weekly public radio show in podcast form. Welcome to Night Vale: Excellent twice-monthly podcast that details the otherworldly goings on of the titular small town via its public radio announcer's commentary. I'd suggest starting from the beginning, but it doesn't take long for it to become very good. WNYC's Radiolab: NPR affiliate's science program in podcast form. I'm also behind on this one, but I should catch up in the relatively near-ish future.
