Okay, so I did read the comments of that Daria article (through the Disqus channel and not A.V. Club proper, so i technically didn't give them my "click") and found them very cathartic. A lot of them addressed issues I have with the A.V. Club and Internet in general nowadays. Great Job, Commenters, for pushing back against this shit.

Is it just me or is the AVC’s increasing self-righteousness being coupled with increased perviness? In the past couple of weeks there has been an embedded video from pornhub and today there’s a photo of Jenny McCarthy’s vomit-covered breasts and a pornhub-themed GJI.
Especially after the chastising Daria for her dirty, sexualized thighs, the AVC today feels a bit like Victorian London: all proper and repressed until Jack the Ripper comes out.

I've heard more about MRAs in my time on the AV Club than I have in my time on Reddit. Reddit is like a series of closed rooms. That can make it a toxic breeding ground for red pill types, but selfishly, it also means I can easily avoid them. I mostly just hang out in a few specialized areas (like cooking stuff, holdmybeer, and frugalmalefashion) and avoid the major subreddits. |

I've been slowly weening myself away from the TOC for a while now. I just don't enjoy the writing there much anymore, though there's still the occasional feature I like. Even the comments aren't much fun anymore (probably a byproduct of the downhill writing), though maybe I'm getting too old to read anonymous strangers argue about petty bullshit.
I'm gonna start listening to more podcasts and looking up shit on Wikipedia to fill the gap.

The Big Jay Oakerson Hatesong might just be the new bar for "completely fucking awful AV Club thing."
The dude manages to insult Seal's scars *and* make some pretty racist-sounding remarks about him, Swahili, and rituals involving dancing around cauldrons with white tourists tied up in them, and Marah just lets him roll with it, and the staff seemed just fine and dandy with publishing it all.
Ugh. Hatesong has never been good, but this is a real scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel moment.
