On the one hand I kind of wish I’d seen the insanity, but on the other hand I’m feeling like I made a good choice to not check out the AVC so often anymore.

Kind of funny how they've gone all-in on evaluating art on the basis of the social values they espouse, and then go ahead and publish this vile shit.

The guy is whining on Twitter about it being taken down and using a ton of sexism against any woman who calls him out. What a miserable excuse for a human being.

Do you guys think this could finally be the silver bullet that kills Hatesong? My fingers are crossed, honestly--I used to like it but ever since it changed to exclusively "here's some jerk we scraped up off a podcast" instead of "musicians & comedians you've actually heard of" it's just tanked.I joked recently that the commentariat could do a better job on this feature than the people they've been picking recently, but now I'm honestly and legitimately convinced of that.

I would legit love to see that happen! What song would you pick? Either Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock's "Picture" or Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina". Neither of them has been particularly overplayed; I hate them on their own merits. Fortunately, they're only ever played on the local Jack FM station, so it's easy to avoid them as long as I can change the station quickly enough. They incite white-hot rage in me both for very different reasons.

Big Jay Oakerson looks like a rejected member of ICP. They wouldn't even give him the face paint!

I don't recall seeing any other 'interview' article where the interviewer has 90% of the lines.

Starwipe is over; today's its last day. Thank goodness. That was a joke I never got. I actually read through a couple of articles today for the first time ever just to get a sense of the apparent meltdown. Turns out all I had to do was glance at the headlines! And I'm not sure whether I want to check out that salvaged Hatesong or not. I've stopped reading for the most part, partly because I'd prefer to think of Marah Eakin as the writer of pieces like that stirring defense of PBS or articles on Nickelodeon after my time that wind up engaging and enjoyable, rather than the person who might as well be interviewing herself about low-hanging musical fruit. And for the reasons everyone else cited.

There hasn't been a Will Harris random roles in two months. Has there been any updates on this? I see Will in comments alot, but yeah, it's now been three months and there've been a few RRs where he wasn't involved.

I have no idea what’s going on with the Starwipe flameout—whether it’s just O’Neal just going mad or O’Neal finally airing out his frustration because the site’s being shut down due to insufficient traffic—but it is glorious.

I would absolutely love it if somehow they decided to switch to picking popular AVC users instead. Might actually save the feature. Does this mean we can begin tentative preparations for The Return of O'Neal? God, I hope so. Looks to be the case from his twitter feed. But yeah starwipe was...not very good. I'll miss it. It was certainly way smarter about celebrity culture than the AVC has been since the Great Exodus. Hopefully Sean brings that bite back to the Old Country. Holy shit that was terrible. I feel like I don't see racism this lazy that often anymore, but I especially didn't expect it from what used to be my favorite website. I'm just impressed that they finally put out a Hatesong more vile and nasty than Jonah Ray's. Wasn't sure it could be done!

Starwipe is over; today's its last day. Thank goodness. That was a joke I never got. That's a bummer for Sean O'Neal, as he obviously put a lot of himself into building Starwipe and took pride in the direction of the site; selfishly though, I'm excited to see his byline return to the AVC. While it had its moments I was never a regular reader of Starwipe: it seemed to be an effective satire of a certain type of entertainment reporting, but the target it was satirizing was so obnoxious I rarely had the stomach to consume a send-up of it. It did seem to hit a stride over the last week as the place was torched though, and one of the last pieces - a terrific bit on Kim Kardashian appropriately titled Fuck This - is an all-time classic IMO, although it seems to have received a fair amount of blowback from some culture critics who objected to the idea that KK is not necessarily the greatest ideal of empowerment.

I disagreed with some parts of it, but I really loved this bit: Being super into yourself is not empowering, goddamnit; it’s obnoxious. Vanity is one of the cardinal sins for a reason, because it makes the planet impossible to live in when every single person believes they’re the only ones on it.I feel like the Gawker/Buzzfeed/whatever crowd have pushed this idea that being a terrible, self-absorbed person is ~~~empowering~~~ because of ~~~self-love~~~ and it's kind of nice to see somebody tear into that bullshit.

When Sean announced StarWipe's end over Twitter, he phrased it as 'the last day of StarWipe,' which made me think it was a terminal project to begin with, possibly with the expectation that if it can become as stupidly successful as ClickHole they would let it live to see another year. Pretty lofty goal for something that had a lot of overlap between The Onion, the A.V. Club, Clickhole, and general entertainment sites in general.

I definitely feel like Starwipe and (especially) Clickhole took TOC as fodder for their mockery. Starwipe always had a difficult mission in that it was aimed at the “You know you’re wasting your time reading celebrity news but you’re here reading it anyway” demo—I remember writing shortly after it premiered that its main target were the people reading it. That’s definitely true, but it became a lot better and—channeling Wallet Inspector—smarter at doing that (and implicating everybody) as it went on and I ended up a more reliable click for the Clickhole links on the AVC than the AVC articles after a point.
