They should hire me to moderate. I'd go scorched earth on a couple long term trolls. Which probably makes me unqualified actually. While I was there, we flirted several times with hiring a fulltime community manager just to read comments and get rid of trolls and so on. But that was under Phipps, who was more insistent that writers engage with the comments section than his successors, who have mostly held the opinion that comments should be ignored outside of rare occasions. then don't have comments if it is just going to be ignored. I know you aren't there anymore, but if they seriously are just going to let most harassment slide right on by, why bother? And yes I know why they will keep comments, because without comments it equals less money because less people will be inclined to visit. But it is pretty shitty to have that opinion. No wonder that place is a shit heap now, no offense to you, all to AVC.

And yes I know why they will keep comments, because without comments it equals less money because less people will be inclined to visit. But it is pretty shitty to have that opinion. No wonder that place is a shit heap now, no offense to you, all to AVC. I have come to think that most comments sections should probably just be given the heave ho. I do occasional comment chats at Vox, and keeping them free of trolls, spam, etc., is a job in and of itself. On the other hand, I can understand the AVC point of view -- spending too much time in those comments could be really demoralizing, even if you weren't subject to some of the harassment and abuse a few of our writers received. It's the kind of place where a lot of the commenters view the section as an audition for a job -- rightly or wrongly -- and where they think if they can just successfully prove the writer is an idiot, they'll get her job. Which breeds anger all around. So I get it, but I also think if they're going to have a comment section, there should be someone whose job is solely making sure it's not a cesspool. Maybe that could fall to a social media manager or something. (I should say that I have no idea; maybe they've hired such a person, but if they have, that person isn't doing a great job.)

It's just typical nonsense click-bait, designed to rile everyone up and keep Univision's coffers happy.
Meanwhile, I find Den of Geek and Uproxx's pop-culture section are doing a decent job replacing TOC in my shriveled little heart.
(Actually, I'm doing a terrible job of my resolution to stay away from the place. If The A.V. Club were heroin, they would have found me dead long ago, half-naked, blood dripping from my nose, ODing after a particularly inane GJI.)

I'll be honest, I feel like the AVC (and also, sadly, the Avocado) has been getting progressively more hostile towards women, but this was just a BLATANT example of it, and the self-congratulatory nature of a ton of the comments made me want to barf. It's an open comments system that nobody wants to/can moderate. It's only going to get worse. And as it works harder and harder to get its links shared on Facebook and Twitter, because such is the nature of the content beast in 2017, it's just going to keep attracting whatever weirdoes who happen to have Disqus accounts happen to see it linked to elsewhere. Success is a two-edged sword.

I've found that Weird/Leftist Twitter has made a decent replacement for the AVC in terms of community, which is vaguely unnerving because Twitter is typically godawful.

This Bill Maher video ad is autoplaying now in the sidebar on articles, with no interface for muting or stopping it or anything. What with the persistent newsletter pop-up, I'm expecting the AVC to look like this around the end of the year: Everything old is new again. Thanks, Millennials!

Thanks, Millennials! i use AdBlocker Ultinate in firefox and block everything that isn't the actual article or comments. i can make the blocks any part of the page, and they can be set to global, and easily temporarily disabled.

Alas, I'm on my work computer where I cannot install browser plug-ins, and where it's also least convenient to have autoplaying videos.

Eh, I'm a faculty member. I'm physically "at work" on an institutionally provided computer, but I'm not actually obligated to be doing any work at the present moment. My conscience is clean.

Chalk it up to a bad case of control-freakism. Sounds should not be coming out of my computer that I have not authorized to be there, and they certainly shouldn't be able to persist when I have chosen not to want to continue hearing them. It's the one place where I do feel a certain kind of spiritual kinship with the moral monsters who wholeheartedly support the Castle Doctrine.

It's crazy to me that I remember so many commentors and jokes from way way back. I believe I single-handedly tried to keep 'sour pumpkins' going for the longest time. Sour pumpkins, pal!

That's too bad. I AM a community manager, and I'm constantly holding up the AVC commentariat as what we should aspire to cultivate in our forums. Plus I am of the opinion (a PROFESSIONAL opinion, now that I am paid to do forum stuff *pushes glasses up nose*) that engaging directly with commenters regularly (albeit in moderation) does a lot to promote the right tone. While there's always some asshole who will take potshots no matter what, when you directly talk to people, they tend to remember you're a person and it just changes the whole interaction a lot. Whenever my users start bitching and moaning about the company- at least when it's the regular users- I tend to engage with them directly and it just changes the energy a lot. They might still be critical, but it's no longer this shitfest. They just SO appreciate being *heard*. It makes a difference.

So this has nothing to do with the folks running the site, but considering it happens over there I thought it kinda fits in on this thread. Now, knowing that one of the community standards here is to not talk about others (with the exception of Fatman) I'm going to be very vague, and talk more about my response than the person. But if it's too obvious then feel free to let me know and I'll edit or delete. There's an individual who talks about having an imaginary...shall we say friend. Everytime they start up, it makes me feel really sad and lonely for some reason. I mean I guess if it works for you who am I to judge, but it bums me out. On the other hand occasionally other commenters will make joking comments about it, and I sometimes want to upvote and laugh and other times feel like this person has shared something that for whatever reason makes sense to them and other people are taunting them with it. Which just bums me out again. Am I the only one dealing with this everytime this comes up either sincerely or as a joke? Is it actually just a bit or an old joke that I'm not aware of the origins of? Can we get someone a pet or paperwork on how to adopt?
