this is probably the biggest and most depressing blunder the Old Country has ever made, but I can't hold it against anybody, because I fell for it too and it's sad as fuck

It seems pretty unfair to call that a blunder. They were told by multiple people, including his apparent widow, that a well-known and well-respected community member had died. What else were they supposed to do exactly? Demand an obit? Putting the memorial thread up in the first place was above and beyond what they should be expected to do.

Yeah, 'Buzz' really covered all the bases in terms of convincing people that it was genuine.

I am pretty good at sussing out catfishes and caught a few in the act at an old forum I used to moderate, and I fell for this hook, line, and sinker, to the degree I friended both of "them" on Facebook and Twitter. I don't think AVC could have possibly known.

I don't think AVC could have possibly known. I don't think anyone should beat themselves up over it. I don't think there's really anything to regret. It's a weird situation. I can't really fathom what motivates people to carry something on to such a degree (though on the other hand, that's possibly a personal deficit, since I lack even the discipline to run a gimmick account). You mostly just have to take people as they are until something proves otherwise.

The glee with which commenters tear Lindsay Lohan down any time there's a newswire about here always bothers me. What the hell did she do to deserve the countless comments about her being a disease ridden whore who is a complete nut job? Her career took a bit of a stumble and she had some substance abuse issues, anything else?

People like to have one person in their lives, or in the news, who makes them feel like they're doing just fine at the whole being human thing. "Oh, I might be fucked up, but I'm not Lindsay Lohan. Hah!"

I mean, she says dumb stuff sometimes, but nothing offensive or shitty, just the normal egotistical stuff a lot of celebrities say. Unfortunately, she won't get the same chances as her male counterparts to revive her career, because if you're a man with substance abuse/mental health issues, you deserve pity and as much as help as you can get, even if you're Mel Gibson or Charlie Sheen and have been abusive, but if you're a woman with substance abuse/mental health issues whose worst crime is waffling on 45, you're just a dumb whore and don't deserve anything but scorn.

Someone just pointed out that the GJI on the difficulties of adapting Watchmen to the big screen was an exact repeat of one they'd done in August, and the article got pulled. I read the comment, refreshed the page to see if anyone had responded, and the article was gone. I've never seen that happen real time.

THey doubled up with two newswires on the same subject a little while back, and pulled an article with a bunch of comments on it.

Amazon Web Services is down, and AVC is stuck because they are trying to retract a super horrible Katie Rife newswire about how this poor random dude at the Oscars just got out of jail, and because he was in jail, he's clearly a terrible person we should all hate.
It's gross and bad.

I mean, we can all agree it was more stupidity than active malice. There's definitely a snarky tone one can invoke for an article about the guy, where the target clearly is the media and not the man himself.
But yeah, some piss-poor brainstorming and oversight.

I don't know. I've read Katie's work on the site for years, and it is extremely out of character to have written and posted that - it doesn't square with my familiarity with her at all - but man, she really went for it. I guess she got locked into the "der, memes have dark sides" thing without realizing that memes are people and talking about memes can have consequences?

So I was working 2 back to back 14 hours days and didn't visit TOC much, missed this entirely. Now I see the article and headline have been changed to "reflect their values". How was the original headline worded? What did they excise?

How was the original headline worded? What did they excise? Originally the spin was that Oscars Guy had let down America by harboring a dark secret that would make us all hate him. The headline was And the text of the article was along the lines of: "Just like Ken Bone became a beloved meme, only to reveal that he was a creeper who admitted to insurance fraud, so Gary from Chicago has a dark side. He stole some perfume in the 1990s. Guess that ruins Gary for all of us." But not sarcastic - I mean, it was written with Peak Irritating Internet Irony, but the implication wasn't that people are being mean to Gary. The implication was that you should never trust a meme person because they will always turn out to be secretly bad.

The GJI article yesterday on why Tim Allen isn't still making movies today. The Internet link in question? One of those "Looper" clickbait videos that just regurgitates obvious factoids with bland commentary.
It's like writing a GJI for one of those "8 celebrities you'll never believe are Scientologists" scroll-articles.

I'll level with you - I have reacted poorly to this. I don't know who they're referring to when they say it hasn't been adressed. In the article itself there's a link to a piece written last week on Stereogum's monthly metal column on this subject. Noisey's metal editor Kim Kelly is outwardly antifascist and goes out of her way to highlight non-garbage politics having bands and artists. I listen to a podcast from a couple of prominent British metal journalists called That's Not Metal who have, on several occasions, called out people like Phil Anselmo for his white supremecist outbursts. To say that these views are widely tolerated by the larger metal community is a good way to show your own ignorance. Are there nazis and all round bad lads playing in niche metal bands? Sure! Are there dickheads and numbskulls who'll listen to them for The Lulz? You Bet! Do they represent me? NAW MATE.

As I said in the comments, one of the most obnoxious things about the hall-monitor shit that online writers do now is that they think they can waltz into other people's genres and cultures and act like they totally understand the context for all of it and go "okay, this part's good, this part's bad, this part's bad, this part's good, and everyone has to accept our judgment of that." And it's not just metal - like, the other day I saw some screenshots of white women on Jezebel being totally shocked and outraged that Remy Ma had written a fairly vicious song directed at Nicki Minaj and recommending that Minaj contact the authorities because it was clearly a death threat. They hadn't even heard of a fucking diss track.

I see articles like this at least a few times a month on the metal sites I visit. It appears AVC thinks they have some breaking news!!! And while I agree with the main point of the article, it does seem to imply that metalheads across the board give this shit a pass. (I never liked Anselmo and I like him even less now). Oh and I love the reference to "up-and-comers" Pallbearer (kicking ass since 2012)! Also, even though extreme metal tends to have artists who feel the need to rely on some level of shock value, that doesn't mean ignorance and bigotry is exclusive to the metal community. Like we know every little pop star and indie darling's personal views. Good looking out, AVC.
