The original E.U. probably focused too heavily on the force. FTFY. I mean, I did enjoy a lot of the stories, both in novels and in games, about Luke training a new generation of Jedi, and even some of the bickering over which philosophies were right, but in retrospect it makes more sense for it to fade into legend. Most of the Rebellion probably just knows that the Emperor was defeated, it might not even be common knowledge that it was a fight between Luke, Vader and Palpatine, since the Rebels blew up the Death Star anyway. I am sure Palpatine had a pretty good misinformation campaign as well. Mysterious religious cult Jedi going around trying to kill heads of state and overthrow democratically elected governments. We are better off without them in our new secular Empire. Even Vader is mocked.

1. How did they miss Jakku? 2. I don't know how, but Luke being the villain feels like a cop-out in itself. As well as everybody being family. New blood, guys. It's a big galaxy. 3. The fact that the planet-Death Star is on the poster indicates it won't be the big reveal. 4. I don't think John Boyega's going to die for...meta reasons. You all know what I'm talking about.

Jean-Luc Lemur Yeah no way am I watching that. (Actually stopped watching Red Letter Media during their Prequel coverage; while Phantom Menace was a good review the subsequent videos felt a little redundant to me, but I digress.) 2. I don't know how, but Luke being the villain feels like a cop-out in itself. As well as everybody being family. New blood, guys. It's a big galaxy. Cop out, sure. Consistent with J.J. Abrams? Possibly. He has said that what attracted him to this movie was the question 'Who IS Luke Skywalker,' an interesting line of reasoning considering Luke's almost total absence from the trailers. There's no way his absence isn't deliberate - even shots of Mark Hamill on the set leaked online has been pulled. A related question is why - most innocently, it could be because Abrams wants to make the appearance of Luke in the movie a special moment; you can only see him there (the word is Marvel, also owned by Disney, is planning a similar strategy for their upcoming Civil War movie; the plan is to not feature Spider-Man in the many promos to come.) Some have said he may not even be in the movie that much - just a key third act appearance. If so, it makes Abrams' comment about his interest in the question difficult to parse - what interesting things would we learn about Luke in a movie he'd be so relatively briefly in? But, of course, he could not be there because he's turned evil. It's incestuous and obsessed with the Skywalker family, but it's a quintessentially Star Wars kind of story, and returning to the Big Classic Beats of the series is clearly on the mind of everyone involved here. One hint about Skywalker maybe being evil is, what we know about Kylo Ren. Yes, Kylo Ren is Adam Driver - he's also essentially an upstart Sith fanboy, making his own homemade lightsabres and obsessing over the legacy of Darth Vader. ...does that really sound like your main villain? An enthusiastic amateur is the Be All and End All of the bad guys? Or does Kylo Ren have a Master - presumably, someone else in the Knights of Ren organisation he's a member of? If anyone is gonna die it's gonna be an old person - not necessarily a member of the original cast; Max von Sydow is kicking around. But money's on Han, in part because Ford has been on record in the past saying the only way he'd reprise his Star Wars role was if the guy finally checked out (and if this is Han's last hurrah, the trailers have been giving him a big workout - he's way more in them than Leia; about whose more muted trailer role we speculate little.) I mean the word is that in casting a female role for the next movie they've been having chemistry tests with Boyega (Gina Rodriguez and Tatiana Maslany and people who don't head beloved TV shows are in the running); and if that's to hide that he's not there anymore it's pretty goddamn circuitous.

One thing I'm really looking forward to in this - Mark Hamill has seriously improved as an actor in the 30+ years since he last played Luke.

NOTE: WHAT APPEARS TO BE SNOKE (OR AT LEAST AN EARLY DESIGN OF SNOKE) HAS JUST LEAKED. THIS IS NOT A JOKE POST. DO NOT GO TO THE FOLLOWING URL OR READ THE WHITED OUT TEXT UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU WANT TO KNOW THIS INFORMATION. i.imgur.com/fWC6IP4.jpg
By Star Wars standards, I think he looks legitimately disturbing. Like I could almost see this showing up in an actual, modern-day horror movie. I can't tell if he's supposed to be an alien or just a majorly deformed human. I like it.

Posted to Reddit from the TFA Visual Guide: Kylo Ren's LightsaberSpeculation here, of course...but the description of the cracked crystal and the crossguard blades being vents seems to support the "Vader fanboy trying, poorly, to follow old blueprints" idea.

Heh, and I gave in and just read the spoilers from the premiere. Not repeating them here, but figured it was easier than avoiding the internet for the next 2-3 weeks until I can see it for myself.
Sounds great, honestly. Still definitely looking forward to it.

I kind of figured the faulty lightsaber from some of the first trailers, (they really played up the crackly sound) but the vents are something I had not considered.

This probably goes without saying but with the movie premiering abroad in the next day followed by the US in a couple days lets try and keep any spoilers contained here rather than the Force Awakens Thread or the Shoutbox.
Man I'm excited

Tons of shit went down last night Star Wars-wise. Someone took pictures and audio in the theater and leaked them online. The pics disappeared/are disappearing, but I saw them and:
MAJOR SPOILERS
The good: Han's face when he gets stabbed Luke looks awesome in the end
The bad: Snoke was a disappointment (face/bone structure is different from the concept art)

Just FYI. Anyway, I am just back from seeing the movie; everything that follows contains spoilers from having seen the movie. What The Hell Is Snoke.
I mean let's cover some ground here. He's not Sith. There's more to the dark side than the Sith, as helpfully mysterious Maz Kanata puts it. He is clearly the Palpatine of the New Order. He corrupted Ben Solo into the Knights of Ren, so whatever that is it's part of whatever he wants, which also involves killing Luke Skywalker and stopping Jedi from existing.
But what is he and where did he come from?
So much of this movie is steeped in the past and the familiar. The New Order is part of the legacy of the Empire. But not this... guy, even if his role clearly fits into the Palpatine mould.
Also what would he look like in person?
We keep seeing him as this massive imposing presence but that is a hologram every time; Palpatine's head loomed as large in Empire Strikes Back. He could look the same size as a human; he could even look smaller than one (dare I say it, Yoda-sized.) He could even Oz-like look nothing like Snoke.
Further thoughts: Leia may have hung back in this movie, and Luke further, but Kylo was Leia's son and Luke's pupil - he is far from finished with a previous generation's disappointment and fears and hopes.
...this will be the psychodrama of Return of Jedi's Throne Room over three movies, won't it.

DRC, did you like the design of Snoke? It left me a bit cold. I liked that you could clearly see it was Serkis. I mean the bone structure of the face is a dead ringer for Gollum. This said, Lupita Nyong'o had the best CGI character design. There was a moment where I couldn't honestly believe that that was her character - she's such a tall woman the idea they'd cast her as a midget who I at first assumed was a random bar character (she even vaguely resembles a Cantina resident) never, ever occurred to me; and then when I realised they really had I laughed; but she and the CGI team really make that character work. I kinda hope she shows up in the sequels. Also Captain Phasma is no question the new Boba Fett. In that she's someone who wears cool armour that she never takes off, was hyped prior to release, and does almost absolutely nothing and has close to five lines. Given she was last heard of being shoved into a garbage chute of a planet that blew up we don't even know if she's dead or not; can't say I care either way.
