It's been in the 80's and humid and heavy the last three days, which is, needless to say, awful. But oh my god, is it ever gorgeous to look at around here! I think we've hit peak foliage, and the afternoon haze has made the pre-sunset skies completely golden. So my drives home have been utterly exquisite, if I ignore how much I'm sweating. Sounds like we'll be getting a stormy end to this heat wave tomorrow, so I suspect we'll lose a lot of the leaves. Gotta soak it up today! (Then it's supposed to get delightfully colder, of course. I can't wait!)

The colors were just starting to come in, and the whole town, everywhere I went, smelled like leaves being burned: the smell of autumn. It was glorious.

This week has been all over the place. I think it was Tuesday that I turned the AC on for the night because it was stuffy and hot upstairs. Last night I turned the heat on. It's sunny and clear right now but only mid-50s, with lows around 35 tonight.
I would really love to leave work a couple hours early, get a hot apple cider, and go walk in the leaves with the dog. Alas.

It's supposed to cool down quite a bit here starting tonight. Like, in the 60s for a high! Woo-hoo!

Hot and humid here again today! WHEEEE!!
But it's supposed to cool way down, with a high of 55 tomorrow. Of course, we're going down to the DC area for the weekend so I won't be here to enjoy it. It better not warm up again when we get back! ::shakes fist at sky::

It was 98 degrees yesterday, and 95 degrees today. I'm officially sick of my summer wardrobe.

I'm free of my summer wardrobe, at long last! The wind blew mercilessly for about 24 hours straight on Friday into Saturday, and now it's COLD! WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! First frost should be this week! I'm wearing a big, comfy sweater today! We had some chocolates for dessert last night and they weren't creepily gooey from how hot and humid it was, unlike last week! Life is GRAND!!

It's definitely cooler here but not enough that I've had to turn on the heat. (I actually had the A/C on last week.) We needed the AC last week, but refused to turn it on. It was... unpleasant. But! Because we were out of town over the weekend our heat never came on after the temperature dropped. So it was freezing in our house on Sunday afternoon when we got home. It was such a delight -- crank up the heat, put on a cozy sweater, pull some quilts up on the couch... Living the dream, man.

The low last night was like 45, the high today is like 85.
There's no proper way to dress for that. If I bring a jacket in the morning, half the time I leave it at work. And then I bring another jacket, and leave it at work again. Because I never need it at 5 pm, just 8 am.

I built a fire in the wood burning stove tonight. Someone had a serious wood-burning fireplace situation going on yesterday evening when I got home from work. The whole neighborhood smelled marvelously of wood smoke, and since nothing seemed to be burning down, I can only assume that meant someone's home was getting quite cozy and wonderful. Our fireplace is not functional anymore (I have no interest in paying to get it fixed up), so I have to live vicariously through my neighbors' fires. I'm glad you were doing that for your neighbors.

It was 100 degrees here yesterday. October 27th. Is this some kind of sick joke? Latest 100 degree day in history.
Normal low temp is 60 degrees. This morning the low was 76.
All the stores are selling sweaters and other winter clothes. I think I started sweating just looking at them. The shoe stores are having sales on boots. Cannot even imagine wearing boots right now. I'm like.... have any sandals left? Going into month 9 of wearing nothing but sandals.

It's 80 degrees and beautiful today (Saturday). I just picked up a weekend service call an hour or so away that only needs a few hand tools, so they are essentially buying my lunch and paying me to take a nice drive in the convertible.

We either set or at least came within a couple of degrees of setting the record high for today (it got up to 88 or 89). I am so goddamn sick of this summer.

It was hot and humid here yesterday, too -- close to 80 degrees. But then the front rolled in and we had an evening of thunderstorms before the temperature plummeted. As weird as it is to have thunderstorms this late in October, it was really fun to see all the Halloween decorations in the neighborhood while lightning was flashing all around!

Today, November 1, it was 82 here. I got to drive to Terre Haute (about 100 miles) and back with the top down while running a service call. Every trip like this is just gravy now.

I think this is the third year that I'm going to post something to the effect of "Man, normally I love Fall Back DST but this year it kicked my ass." Having kids makes all the difference in the world. Our four year old was up at 5:30 new time. I undertook two ambitious cooking projects to make use of the extra hour. By 7 pm, I kept looking at the clock and getting angry it wasn't later. It felt like I had been up 24 hours when I went to bed last night.

Last year I had the DST fall-back that you dream of -- I totally forgot it was happening and discovered on Sunday morning, before I got out of bed, that it was one hour earlier than I thought. STOLEN EXTRA HOUR OF SLEEP! This year I was traveling just for the weekend, taking a pretty intense needlepoint class. I was utterly gassed on Saturday night, and kind of thrilled at the prospect of getting, like, 10 hours of sleep and still being up in time to go to a nice brunch place before the second day of the class started. Alas, the other guests in our hotel had different plans for me, and spent the hours of 2-3:30 in the morning having raucously loud conversations in and out of the rooms on our floor, so there was lots of slamming doors and bellowing laughter and LOUDquietLOUD as they went from hallway to rooms to hallway again. I was kept awake the whole time, and the only reason I didn't go on a murderous rampage was because I kept telling myself, "Well, at least it's technically kind of only 2 in the morning right now, instead of 3." (For the record, juuuuuuust as I was ready to call the front desk to complain, they'd quiet down. Then start again, but clearly a different group of people elsewhere on the hallway. Over and over. So it wasn't like there was, like, a cluster of five people who needed to be tossed out. No, the problem was too-thin walls, a big wedding in the hotel, and too many kids in town for a lacrosse tournament. WHY DOES NO ONE RESPECT THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE ASLEEP BY 10 BECAUSE THEY HAVE NEEDLEPOINTING TO DO? Man, I've never felt more like an old lady. )

More weird-ass weather. Was in 40s-50s, then hit 72 yesterday, windy as heck last night, still warmish this morning but due to plummet tomorrow with highs in the upper 30s and possible flurries.

This could go on the food board, or in the "things that make me irrationally happy" thread, but I'm putting it here, because its seasonal. They have fresh mixed nuts in the shell back in stores. We got a few pounds over Thanksgiving, and I just cracked my first ones today, and they're soooo good. I have maybe a 1/2 pound left over from last year, but some of them were getting kind of old and stale tasting, and I think they'll become a treat for the squirrels.

The forecast has been taunting me with a legit snowfall for a couple of weeks now, but the clothes seat we've come was maybe an inch that melted that afternoon. This week promises two exciting things - temperatures that don't go above 32 for a whole week, and snow every day. Fingers crossed.
I should point out that we only need to drive once a week, so snow is a pretty unmixed blessing for us.
