One of my students gave me a 40% coupon for Red Wing boots that one of their clients had given them. It was about to expire so I totally treated myself to a pair of 1907s: I saw a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers the othet day I was considering. So, different boots, but how warm are yours? Do you think they stand up to a modest amount of snow and ice or are they unsuitable to winter weather altogether?

This is how I would like to outfit myself this winter. I still think a fur flap hat is the way to go: Though you wear ear muffs, I think?

Snow and ice was no problem, I just kept them oiled and they seemed to repel everything. Temperature-wise, I was fine walking the ~1.5 miles to work in them in the teens ( oF). They're not winter boots by any means, but as a boot to wear on my way to doing something indoors even in the coldest/nastiest parts of winter (I live near-sh Minneapolis MN), they were fine.

That's helpful, thanks Not a real doctor. Is there a particular brand of oil you use? I've only ever sprayed my boots with a water guard, but I don't really know how useful that is.

I wonder if hand muff(in)s must be due a renewed popularity before long.
The above earmuffs look great.

I use leather moisturizer on my black boots and finish with silicone spray. The road salt in Chicago is no joke.

moimoi makes a good point Lord Lucan. I don't have to deal with much, if any salt where I am. We get a lot of snow but they just plow and put down sand except for on a few hills so it's mostly a hard-packed snow/ice mixture. If you're dealing with salt you might need a more impervious coating.

I'll just rely on Sorel Caribous for the salted months as usual, I guess.

I'm inclined to get a curling sweater this autumn, but it's hard to choose amongst them, given that they're all awful.

I'm inclined to get a curling sweater this autumn, but it's hard to choose amongst them, given that they're all awful. Etsy's got you covered. Or you could go with a "mash-up" sweater, described thusly: "If you like fishing, dancing and hanging out with adorable puppies (and who doesn’t, really?) then boy oh boy, do we have the perfect sweater for you. This excellently bizarre design is part of our Mary Maxim Mash-Up series, where we take pieces of different vintage sweater patterns released in the 1950s by famed knitwear company Mary Maxim and sew them together into one kooky sweater. "

The mashup one is reprehensible. I think I like the backs of the other blue and white ones better than the fronts.

Hey TIFfers! What's up? Idiotking here, lookin for some fashionable footwear advice! Lemme be honest: I, alone amongst my gays, utterly abhor the notion that, when it comes to footwear, "pain is beauty". I will put comfort ahead of perfect looks almost any day of the week. On the rare occasion I find dress shoes that I can comfortably wear for most of the day and that look sharp with a suit, I cling to them for dear life and have them rebuilt and repaired at ever escalating expense so that I never need to go without them. But most of the time, I don't have to wear those. But I also can't wear ratty gym sneakers. I need some good looking sneakers, that can mix with jeans (blue, grey, or black), khakis, and casual slacks. Think a gayer, more varied Steve Jobs look, or 80's David Letterman. I know white tennis/casual shoes are kinda a thing -- but will they be in the winter? Also, I friggin' hate flat-soled shoes. I like them to have a little bend, a little curve to them. Running shoes are boss. I already have a pair of retro NB 420's in dark navy. Those are pretty sweet. But I'm thinking something grey or white -- something versatile -- is more what I need. So - running or running-style, white, grey, or other neutral; and durable enough for an NYC winter (so some water resistance/cleanability is a big plus) . Oh, and not super expensive. Because I could custom build my ideal NB sneaker, but uh... It'd cost me $150.00! ( www.newbalance.com/product?pid=US574M1-BLANK&designId=3750942&default=true) Thoughts? Opinions?

Not political, purely fashion: the First Lady wearing a baseball hat that says "FLOTUS" is insanely dumb, right?

I like those New Balance, except for the fact that New Balance is apparently racist now. And I personally rock Pumas, but for boys I think you can't go wrong with Adidas Sambas. They're soccer shoes and they look sexy with or without socks.

I've always liked the adidas aesthetic, I've just always had a hard time finding a pair when I'm out shopping that both looks right and fits right. The only pair I have is a custom-painted "graffiti" edition I picked up in Berlin back in 2009.

Okay, so here's three sneaker options: There's the Steve Jobs style thing: then there's this option.... Then of course, I love red, but I have too many red things already:

I like style 2 too - seems the most practical for NYC's grime level. Also, I did not know you were a botanist! I could have used your input for my plants thread.

I agree that no. 2 is a good choice, but is no. 3 the sort of red thing that goes with other red things in your wardrobe, idiotking ? It pops to me in a way the others don’t and if it does go well it could work as a versatile shoe for you in a way that it wouldn’t for a lot of people.
