Chungking Express is not romantic. In fact, it bears little resemblance to anything discernibly human, and what is human is mostly just creepy stalking and criminal mischief.

As far as Disney goes, Hunchback is the best Renaissance film. Yes, the gargoyles are terrible, but they thankfully don't take up that much time to really sink the film. Also, Road to El Dorado is better than most Disney films. So DreamWorks did one thing right at least. The Road to El Dorado is better than Hunchback, Pocahontas, and Lion King put together. I am in no way being funny. I genuinely like it more and think it's a better movie. It certainly cracks me up on the regular thanks to its sense of humor, and the horse is just a sassy bitch who still acts like a horse.

Your assessment is on point, but I still find that movie incredibly romantic. Maybe it's just my limitless love for anything WKW.

I still think Frenzy is one of Hitchcock's five best films. I wish it received more love.

There is a current Lion King spinoff, The Lion Guard, featuring Simba's son. Adult Simba is now voiced by Rob Lowe. Their Zazu is pretty good, but their Timon and Pumba are both terrible.

I think I might have liked the movie more if it had not been sold as something so romantic. Admittedly I'm also not a huge fan of WKW; I like In the Mood for Love, but everything else has been pretty meh to me.

Surely others must have felt that the titular composition from Mr. Holland's Opus, though its performance was the emotional climax to a great movie, wasn't actually very good. Such is the nature of in-universe genius. If it was that good, they would have just made the thing instead of the movie. The "Simple Songs" performed at the end of last year's Youth is a terrific piece - because they used a "real" composer, David Lang, and real classical performers like Viktoria Mullova.

At least for Christopher Doyle's cinematography those movies are worth another look. But yeah, In the Mood for Love is clearly his best.

I prefer the first half of Chungking Express to the second half, but the second half still works for me. I consider it fairly abstract, though, and not in any way “real.”
Also, I’m surprised how in our discussion of the Disney Renaissance no one’s mentioned Mulan, which is kind of lost among the late nienties dreck. It’s probably the most balanced of in terms of tone, managing to hit the action, humor, family conflict just perfectly.

I don't understand the appeal of Disney, and I'm not asking anyone to explain it to me. To each his own and no judgement implied: it's just not for me.

It’s probably the most balanced of in terms of tone, managing to hit the action, humor, family conflict just perfectly. Mulan was the last WDAS movie I saw in theaters, and I almost feel it's not as fondly remembered because it's so balanced. It never reaches the soaring highs of the 89-94 wave or Hunchback. At the same time, I feel like it suffered for coming out so late. It's a very likable film. The weirdest thing is that the formula we all have in our heads for a Disney Renaissance film doesn't perfectly fit any one movie...except The Princess and the Frog. I think that's one of the (several) reasons people reacted kind of cold to it. It was the exact incarnation of our cynical, fuzzy memory of what those movies were.

Is that an unpopular opinion among adults? I know many that connected with Tangled, he'll, my cousin sang it with her husband at their wedding, but only one who liked Frozen, and she's completely nuts.

This is 10000000000% correct. Frozen is really unbearable and all the issues I had with it after my first viewing have only been magnified a billion times by having to watch it ONE BILLION TIMES (occasionally more than once a day) while working at the theater daycare. Tangled, on the other hand, is adorable as all get-out.

One of the theaters here is celebrating Olivia de Havilland’s 100th birthday with Gone with the Wind. On July 4th. Beyond the obvious, The Snake Pit’s a way better showcase for her talents.

Avatar is so forgettable I sometimes forget it's made more than Titanic. And, y'know, that it exists.

"John Wick" is not dumb fun, just dumb. At least it's better than "Cowboys & Aliens", which was infuriatingly dumb.

Avatar is so forgettable I sometimes forget it's made more than Titanic. And, y'know, that it exists. That's actually pretty normal. I think at this point there are more thinkpieces on Avatar's total lack of impact than actual reviews of it.

Tom Hanks hasn't been funny in live action since "A League of Their Own" in 1992.

Pretty much the only thing I can remember from this movie is that one of his favourite students is the fucking GOVERNOR at the end of the movie but his school's band program still gets shut down? Also I had weird pantsfeelings for Glenne Headley as a teenager

That was a surprisingly solid defense, and it almost made me want to rewatch the film for a time.
