How about that, Michigan played 59:50 minutes of a good game.

So there's some semblance of a playoff picture crystallizing now. My money is on: 1) Winner of Ohio State/Michigan State game 2) Winner of Baylor/TCU game 3) Winner of Pac-12 title game (probably Utah vs. Stanford) 4) Winner of LSU/Alabama And obviously there's still a chance that a Clemson or Notre Dame keeps winning out and takes advantage of some chaos above them. Or that an undefeated Iowa steals the Big Ten championship game ( )

god clemson in the playoffs would be insufferable... It will be interesting to see what happens if they stay undefeated. I think a 1-loss Bama would certainly get in over them, but does a 1-loss Pac-12 winning Stanford? Or an LSU that gets upset in the SEC title game? What if TCU or Baylor picks up a dumb loss again this year? I think all those teams would be better than Clemson, but it will be interesting to see how the committee sees it.

I think any undefeated Power 5 team gets in, even Clemson. You can certainly make the case that the ACC isn't very good this year, but you could have made the same case about the B10 last year, and look what happened. Plus Clemson already has a solid non-con win over Notre Dame, which is more than Ohio State had last year. Besides, even in a down conference, going 13-0 is really hard.

I'm trying to decide if there's a bigger gap in college football between the talent levels of offense or defense than my Mizzou Tigers. Our defense is one of the best in the nation, having not allowed a touchdown in 7 straight quarters against Florida and Georgia. Our offense, however, hasn't scored a touchdown in 10 quarters, since the third quarter of the South Carolina game. All those fans (including me) who thought that Drew Lock would be the magic tonic that the offense needed are now forced to conclude that the problems in the O-line ran deeper than Maty Mauk (who is still suspended).

I think FSU has a better chance than Clemson if they win the head to head because FSU has to play Florida late in the season which could gi e them a bump, but they have to be perfect

Auburn @ Kentucky Sean White threw for 225 yards, but all of Auburn's touchdowns were on the ground. Kentucky's Patrick Towles threw for 359 yards and an interception. Auburn holds off 30-27.
UCLA @ Stanford. Josh Rosen threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns but also threw three interceptions. Stanford's Christian McCaffrey ran for 243 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Hogan threw for 131 yards and three touchdowns including this reception by Francis Owusu, catching the ball behind the receiver's back: youtu.be/RDzfvVwJ1qI. The Cardinal wins 56-35
Michigan State @ Michigan. Hoo boy. So Conner Cook threw for 328 yards and one touchdown, but none of that really matters because everyone is talking about that fumbled punt with ten seconds yet. If you haven't seen it: youtu.be/RBlgN85wB6U. Okay, I just want to say that you can't blame the game on this one poor punter. If you game can be lost because someone fumbles a punt, then the game wasn't yours to begin with. The other 59 minutes should have been better. Sparty wins 27-23.
Oregon @ Washington. Vernon Adams threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Ducks to a 26-20 win.
Boston College @ Clemson DeShaun Watson threw and impressive 420 yards and three touchdowns over the Eagle's usually tight defense, winning 34-17.
Louisville @ Florida State. Louisville's Lamar Jackson threw for 307 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Florida State was slow to start in the first half, but dominated the second half Everett Golson threw for 372 yards and three touchdowns and Dalvin Cook, still nursing that hamstring, ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns. So far the Noles have not had an offensive turnover. Florida State 41-21.
Pitt @ Georgia Tech. It was close. The Yellowjackets' running back Marcus Marshall ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns, whereas Pitt's Nathan Peterman threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns, but it was Chris Blewitt's 56 yard field goal that won the game for the Panthers, 31-28.
Virginia Tech @ Miami. The Hurricane's Brad Kaaya threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns to help Miami beat Virginia Tech for the second year in a row, 30-20.
Missouri @ Georgia. Are you a fan of field goals? The you would have loved this 9-6 Bulldog win. The loss of Nick Chubb was devastating.
USC @ Notre Dame. Before the game Athletic Director Pat Haden felt lightheaded and was taken to seek medical treatment, probably when he realized how bad he was at picking coaches. Interim coach Clay Helton lead the Trojans and quarterback Cody Kessler threw for 365 yards and a pair of both touchdowns and interceptions. It was not enough against the Irish. Deshone Kiser threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and C.J. Prosise ran for 143 and two more touchdowns. The Irish scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to win 41-31.
Penn State @ Ohio State. The Nittany Lions kept it close for the first half, with Christian Hackenberg throwing for 120 yards, but then Urban Meyer decided to change quarterbacks, putting in J.T. Barrett who threw for only thirty yards, but two touchdowns. He also had 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead the Buckeyes to a 38-10 win. Ezekiel Elliot had 153 yards and a touchdown.
Alabama @ Texas A&M. Kyle Allen had a rough day. Although he threw for 263 yards, he also threw three interceptions. Alabama's Minkah Fitspatrick had two pick sixes. Derrick Henry ran for 236 yards and two touchdowns, while Jake Coker had 138 yards. Alabama wins 41-23.
Florida @ LSU. With Will Grier out for a year, Treon Harris stepped up to throw 271 yards and two touchdowns, but LSU's Brandon Harris also had a great game, throwing 202 yards and two touchdowns. Leonard Fournette continued his Heisman campaign with 180 yards and two touchdowns, but it was a fake field goal by Trent Domingue that won the game: 35-28.
Oklahoma @ Kansas State Baker Mayfield threw for 282 yards and five touchdowns as the Sooners shut out Kansas State 55-0.
Arizona State @ Utah. The Utes continue their Cinderella season with Travis Wilson throwing 297 yards and two touchdowns. Devontae Baker ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns as well as Utah beat Arizona State 34-18.
Elsewhere, Memphis beats Ole Miss 37-24, Baylor wins over West Virginia 62-38, Iowa beats Northwestern 40-10, and South Carolina without Steve Spurrier wins 19-10 over Vanderbilt
This week in wacky trophies: Notre Dame wins the Jeweled Shillelagh, which in my opinion looks like a sex toy. Michigan State wins the Paul Bunyon trophy
Polls: in the AP poll, Utah jumps TCU for third place. Alabama, Florida State, Stanford, Notre Dame, and Iowa all jump in the polls as Florida and Texas A&M fall. The AAC now has three teams in the top 25- Memphis, Houston, and Temple.
Next week: California @ UCLA, Utah @ USC, Tennessee @ Alabama, Auburn @ Arkansas, Texas A&M @ Ole Miss, Penn State @ Maryland, Clemson @ Miami, Florida State @ Georgia Tech, Ohio State @ Rutgers, Washington @ Stanford, Texas Tech @ Oklahoma, Iowa State @ Baylor, Pitt @ Syracuse, and Indiana and Michigan State play for the Old Brass Spittoon.

Yeah...the U isn't great this year, but I don't think anyone thought they were 58-0 bad. This victory not only guarantees the Tigers a playoff spot if they win out, they might not even be out of it if they do end up getting upset along the way.
My current playoff prediction:
1. LSU 2. Clemson 3. Ohio State 4. Baylor

Speaking of firings, Al Golden is unsurprisingly out at Miami. Most people figured he'd be gone at the end of the year, but losing 58-0 has a way of speeding up the process.

And the coaching carousel continues. Jerry Kill has retired at Minnesota, effective immediately. He's been plagued with health issues for years, and I'm guessing it has gotten to the point where it is impossible to continue to coach. Has there ever been a season with so many in-season vacancies, especially at major conference schools?

California @ UCLA On Thursday night, Josh Rosen set a school record of throwing 34 passes. He had 399 yards and three touchdowns. Ka'imi Fairbarn kicked a 60 yard field goal at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, Paul Perkins left the game with an injury. UCLA sacked Cal's quarterback Jared Goff six times. Goff had 295 yards and three touchdowns, but UCLA won 40-24.
Utah @ USC- Utah's bubble burst as quarterback Travis Wilson threw four interceptions, three of them to Cameron Smith. USC's Cody Kessler threw 264 yards in the Trojan's 42-24 win
Tennessee @ Alabama- Once again the Volunteers failed to close the deal. After trailing for most of the game, Alabama's Jake Coker, who had 247 yards for the night, lead a drive that ended in a 14 yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry to win the game 19-14.
Auburn @ Arkansas- Tied at 24 at the end of regulation, the game went into four overtime periods. Razorback quarterback Brandon Allen had 233 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. 54-46.
Texas A&M @ Ole Miss Chad Kelly threw 241 yards and two touchdowns to beat the Aggies 23-3.
Penn State @ Maryland- This was a close one. Christian Hackenberg threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns, but Maryland managed to shut down the running game. Maryland's Perry Hills ran for 128 yards and a touchdown. He threw for 225 yards and another touchdown, but also threw three interceptions. It wasn't enough. Penn State squeaks by 31-30.
Clemson @ Miami- This was bad for the Hurricanes. It was the Deshauwn Watson show as he threw 143 yards and a touchdown and ran for 98 yards and another touchdown. The team ran for 416 yards. Their defense held the normally good Brad Kaaya to 51 yards and a pick six. The Tigers handed the Hurricanes their worst loss in school history 58-0. Coach Al Golden was fired the next day.
Florida State @ Georgia Tech- Remember how last week I said that if you game gets screwed up by one play, then you didn't do enough to win. Well my heart was broken when the usually clutch Roberto Aguyo's field goal attempt was blocked and run back to win the game. While I didn't think this was going to be our year, it still sucks. Yellowjackets 22-16. Somehow... I will soldier on.
Ohio State @ Rutgers- J.T. Barrett is the starter and he threw 223 yards and three touchdowns while Ezekiell Elliott ran for 142 yards and a touchdown. The Buckeyes easily beat Rutgers 49-7.
Washington @ Stanford- The Cardinal is on the rise. Kevin Hogan threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns while Christian McCaffery had 109 rushing yards, 112 receiving yards and a touch down each way. Stanford wins 31-14.
Texas Tech @ Oklahoma- If you look at the numbers you might think it was a closer game. Oklahoma had 212 yards from quarterback Baker Mayfield and Texas Tech's Patrick Mahones had 233 yards, but Mahones also had four interceptions. The Sooners win 63-27.
Iowa State @ Baylor- The Cyclones held in there for a while. Joel Landing had 144 yards and three touchdowns. Baylor was just too much. Seth Russell threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns, and Shock Linwood ran for 171 yards, but Russell fractured a bone in his neck and will likely miss the rest of the season. True freshman Jarrett Stidham will start in his place. Baylor won 45-24.
Pitt @ syracuse Pitt's Chris Blewitt hit a 25 yard field goal as time expired to win the game for the Panthers 23-20.
Indiana @ Michigan State- Indiana gave the Spartans a game for the first half. Nate Sudfeld threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns, but lead by Conner Cook, Michigan State dominated the second half. Cook had 398 yards and four touchdowns as MSU wins 52-26
Elsewhere around the league: Houston beat UCF 59-10; Duke overcame Virginia Tech 45-43 in four overtime periods, and LSU beat Western Kentucky 48-20. Division 3 school Mount Union won it's 100th straight game.
This week in wacky trophies, the Spartans beat Indiana to win the Old Brass Spittoon.
On a serious note, a Drunk driver plowed into a crowd at Oklahoma State's homecoming, killing four people and injuring dozens more.
In the polls: Clemson leapt to #3 and Iowa cracked the top ten, while Utah and Florida State dropped.
The Selection Committee meets next week, and now my four are pretty predictable : LSU, Ohio State, Baylor and Clemson. There's a lot of football left to be played
Next Week: I'm going to be at Disney World for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, so I'm probably not going to watch any of this, but: West Virginia @ TCU, Oregon @ Arizona State, Rutgers @ Wisconsin, Clemson @ North Carolina State, Syracuse @ Florida State, Georgia Tech @ Virginia, Ole Miss @ Auburn, South Carolina @ Texas A&M, USC @ California, Arizona @ Washington, Oklahoma @ Kansas State, Florida @ Georgia, and Michigan @ Minnesota

Curse the schedulers for giving ASU a home game on a Thursday night vs Oregon. Whose idea was this??? You need to be fired!!! Do you understand the traffic situation in metro Phoenix on a regular week night? Do you understand the regular traffic nightmare that is Tempe? Why in God's name would you want to funnel 60K+ people to Tempe during evening rush hour? MORONS!!!
It took me 30 minutes to leave campus tonight. That is driving 6 blocks.

Yeah, so it was impossible to GET to the game on time. But, no worries. It went on for, like, 6 hours. Of crappy defense and our regular abominable Pac-12 officiating. And because it is Phoenix metro, the game ending at 11:30pm means people didn't get home until 12:30am. And, again, because it is Phoenix, everyone had to be at work between 7-8am.
Great job, all around!
So, this week saw the Cardinals playing on MNF and ASU playing on Thursday night. This created absolute HAVOC on Phoenix freeways during rush hour on both nights.
PLAY THE GAMES ON THE WEEKEND!!!!

So Clemson is a surprise #1 in the first playoff standings. It's impossible to say if they'll retain that spot if they win out, or even until next week (if LSU knocks of Bama this weekend, I think they'll move up to #1), but if they win out, they're in, no problem.
The committee really likes Alabama, slotting it at #4, despite losing to a team with 2 losses so far, putting the Tide ahead of several undefeateds and Notre Dame, whose only loss is to Clemson. USA Today's analysis wondered if Alabama could stay at #4 even with a loss to current #2 LSU. I seriously doubt that, but it will probably take a blowout loss to knock the Tide out of the Top 10. I don't see a 2-loss Alabama making it in ahead of any undefeated Power 5 teams (particularly since a second loss will almost certainly eliminate Alabama from the SEC West race), but ahead of some one-loss Power 5 teams? Very possible.
The Big 12-2-2+2 is collectively freaking out over Baylor being 6th and TCU being 8th. That's premature. I think the low standings reflect the fact that both team's best victory so far is over 5-4 Texas Tech. The Big 12's Big 4 have so far avoided each other, but they will start cannibalizing each other this weekend when TCU plays Oklahoma State. Should the Bears, Frogs, or Cowboys go undefeated, they'll have beaten three teams who start November with a collective record of 23-1. That should impress the committee. The Big 12's big danger is for a 1-loss team to emerge as the conference champion. Could a 1-loss team be left out in favor of a 2-loss Alabama that didn't even win its division? The committee seems to be suggesting that could very well happen.
Ohio State is #3. That seems about right.
The Pac-12 looks to be the most screwed at this point, with its top team, Stanford, languishing down at #11. Obviously, the conference isn't out of it yet (as plenty of articles since last night have reminded us, Ohio State started at #16 in the first playoff standings last year), but with no undefeated teams left, whoever emerges as the conference champion better only have one loss, or the Pac-12 will be left out in the cold.

It will be interesting to see what happens this week. You would think the winner of TCU-Okie State would finally have a big enough win to push an undefeated Big 12 team into the Top 4, especially if it's TCU. Who knows though, because things will get pretty tricky if Bama beats LSU.
Personally, I would kind of love it if the Big 12 got shut out of the playoff again, because I think it would force the conference to look again at adding a couple teams and re-evaluating it's non-conference scheduling standards, which I think would end up lightening up the difficulty of ISU's schedule a bit. I get not wanting to divide the pie amongst an extra 2 schools, but it really looks more and more like the Big 12 screwed up when they didn't invite Louisville and Cincinnati along with West Virginia in 2011.
