Iowa State and Cuse have now fired their coaches. Has there ever been this many open spots before? No, I think it's pretty unprecedented to have this many open jobs. I kind of thought that might buy Rhoads another year, but obviously that wasn't the case. And then you have AAC schools like Memphis and Houston throwing pretty hefty extensions at their guys in an effort to keep them...I think there may be some pretty disappointed power 5 fanbases at the end of their coaching searches.

Firing Les Miles may be the single stupidest coach firing of all time. Yeah, LSU is mired in a losing streak, but two of those losses were on the road to Top 25 teams and the third was to a team that has been surging over the last month. I know LSU will be seen as an attractive job, but what top-tier coach is going to want to come to a program where a potential 9-3 regular season is grounds for dismissal? Nebraska got greedy last year and fired Bo Pelini, and ended up with Mike Riley, a good coach, but one who I think is, at best, a lateral move. A lateral move from Miles would still be an excellent coach, but with so many other attractive jobs open, the Tigers could very easily end up trading down.

Honestly even if they don't, why would Les want to stay with a program that'd even consider it?

Memphis @ Temple Temple scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to send Memphis to their third straight loss.
Purdue @ Iowa C.J. Beathard threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns as the Hawkeyes clinch the Big Ten Championship game with a win over Purdue 40-20.
Michigan @ Penn State Jake Rudock threw for 256 yards, two touchdowns, and an early interception in the Wolverine's defeat of Penn State 28-16. You would have thought it was a blowout by the way the announcers heaped praise on Jim Harbaugh (who apparently shits gold and gave fire to mankind), but I was even baffled that they seem to think that Michigan might make it to the playoffs, when they have to have a lot of help just making it to the Big Ten championship (They would have to beat Ohio State next week, and Penn State would have to beat Michigan State, which is unlikely) but a two-loss team is not making the playoffs, so let it go, Elsa.
Georgia Tech @ Miami Brad Kaaya had 300 yards and a touchdown as the Hurricanes beat the Yellowjackets 38-21.
LSU @ Ole Miss In the Magnolia Bowl, Chad Kelly threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 81 more yards and two touchdowns as the Rebels beat the Tigers 38-17. Leonard Fournette ran for 108, but it seems the spirit has gone out of the team. There have been rumbles about buying out Les Miles's contract. Keep in mind, that's a $15 million buy out after the school begged the state government for more money or it would have to declare academic bankruptcy. Some more numbers: Miles's record at LSU is 110-32, his real crime is not being Nick Saban. We'll most likely know after the regular season.
Wake Forest @ Clemson Even though DeShaun Watson threw two interceptions, he also threw for 343 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers took care of Wake Forest 33-13.
USC @ Oregon Oregon's season has made a dramatic turn around after early stumbles. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr threw for 407 yards and six touchdowns as the Ducks beat the Trojans 48-28. Cody Kessler had 238 yards and two touchdowns.
UCLA @ Utah Josh Rosen threw for 220 Yards and a touchdown as the Bruins defeated the Utes 17-9.
Northwestern @ Wisconsin. Wisconsin's Joel Stave threw for 229 yards, but the Badgers turned the ball over five times. Northwestern wins 13-7
Michigan State @ Ohio State Probably the biggest shakeup of the day. Credit the offensive line of Michigan State as they dominated time of possession, keeping the Buckeye offense off of the field. Tied at 14, the Spartans kick a last-minute field goal to end Ohio State's perfect season, winning 17-14. Ezekiel Elliot was held to 33 yards and declared that he will not return to Ohio State next year because they're not giving him the ball enough. Sounds like he already has that NFL attitude
Boston College @ Notre Dame Although DeSone Kiser threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, he was also picked off by Boston College's defense twice adding to a total of five turnovers. C.J. Prosise ran over the thousand yard mark for the season before leaving with an ankle injury. The Eagles rallied, with quarterback Jeff Smith throwing a touchdown to Charlie Callinan with less then a minute left. The following onside kick was not successful and the Irish hold out 19-16.
Baylor @ Oklahoma State Mason Rudolph threw for 430 Yards and three touchdowns but it wasn't enough. After Jerrett Stidham left the game with an injury, third string quarterback Chris Johnson threw for 138 yards, two touchdowns and ran for a third as Baylor spoiled the Cowboy's perfect season 45-35, throwing the Big 12 into chaos.
TCU @ Oklahoma The individual numbers don't tell the tale. Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns while TCU's Brarn Kohlhausen threw for 122 yards. TCU's star Quarterback Treyone Boykin was out for the game with Foster Sawyer, but after a disastrous start, he was replaced in favor of Kahlhausen. Total yards: Oklahoma 536, TCU 390; but here's the big one: Turnovers. Oklahoma- 1, TCU- 4. With all else being even, the team that turns the ball over four times is not going to win the game. However TCU rallied and decided to go for two points for the win rather than tie for overtime. The conversion attempt was batted down and Oklahoma survives 30-29
California @ Stanford- Jared Goff had a great game 386 yards and two touchdowns, but it was Stanford's Christian McCaffrey who was the star of the game, rushing for 192 yards that allowed the Cardinal to come out on top 35-22
This week in wacky trophies: Arizona State beat Arizona 52-37 for the Territorial Cup, but it's not terribly wacky. Wait until next week!
Elsewhere around the league: Alabama had no trouble defeating Charleston Southern 56-6, Florida struggled to beat Florida Atlantic 20-14 in overtime, Florida State handled Chattanooga 52-13 with Dalvin Cook scoring twice, Navy beat Tulsa 44-21. North Carolina beat Virginia Tech 30-27 in Frank Beamer's final home game, Connecticut beat Houston 20-17, Pitt beat Louisville 45-34, Kansas State beats Iowa State 38-35 on a 42 yard field goal with three seconds left, Mississippi State beat Arkansas by one point 51-50, and the Citadel edged out South Carolina 23-22.
In the polls: In the AP poll, Ohio State dropped to number 8 and Oklahoma State dropped to 9, Florida's close game had them slip to 10. Iowa jumped up to 3 and Baylor, Oklahoma, Michigan State, and Notre Dame all rose to fill in the gaps. Michigan, Stanford, and Florida State all rose in the second tier. The Selection Committee announced their top four: Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa, with Michigan State and Notre Dame looking in. I don't see the top two losing. And Iowa and Michigan should meet in the Big Ten Championship, so that should settle out, and Notre Dame plays Stanford which should help them. But you really never know.
Who needs a coach? or teams whose head coach has been fired or has retired this year: USC, South Carolina, Miami, Maryland, Illinois, Virginia Tech, UCF, North Texas, Louisiana- Monroe, Hawaii and Missouri. Iowa State fired Paul Rhodes, and now Syracuse fires Scott Shafer after their eighth straight loss. I imagine that we're going to see a lot more after the games next weekend as teams begin to finish their regular seasons
Who's a got a coach: Coaches that have been hired this year: Tracy Claeys is now the head coach of Minnesota Gophers (sorry, a little late on that news)
Next week: A lot of rivalry games: Texas Tech @ Texas, Miami @ Pitt, Navy @ Houston, Missouri @ Arkansas, Oregon State @ Oregon, Washington State @ Washington, Iowa @ Nebraska, Baylor @ TCU, UCLA @ USC, Colorado @ Utah, Notre Dame @ Stanford, North Carolina @ North Carolina State, Virginia Tech @ Virginia, Alabama @ Auburn, Georgia @ Georgia Tech, Oklahoma @ Oklahoma State, Wisconsin @ Minnesota, Iowa State @ West Virginia, Ohio State @ Michigan, Louisville @ Kentucky, Clemson @ South Carolina, SMU @ Memphis, Penn State @ Michigan State, Northwestern @ Illinois, Vanderbilt @ Tennessee, Kansas State @ Kansas, Ole Miss @ Mississippi State, Texas A&M @ LSU, Florida @ Florida State and Kent State @ Akron I am going to be so damn drunk.

LSU is keeping Les Miles, so you know what that makes UGA? Dumber than LSU. And that's low. I wonder how much we had to pay Richt to buy him out. I'm hearing talk about Alabama's defensive coordinator. Or Mike Bobo, god no one really wants Mike Bobo back do they? Maybe this will finally break the addiction. Richt was the last thing common to my tenure.

Toledo head coach Matt Cambell to be coach at Iowa State So...USC, South Carolina, Miami, Maryland, Illinois, UCF, North Texas, Louisiana- Monroe, Hawaii, Missouri, Toledo, Syracuse, Georgia, Virginia, and Rutgers. I'm cautiously optimistic on the new hire. Having a guy whose already been a head coach seems like a promising departure from the last couple hires at ISU, and was probably necessary when replacing the still well liked Rhoads. Worry a bit about recruiting coming from a MAC program in a part of the country we traditionally don't pull guys from, but I suppose that will depend on the rest of the staff.

Richt's problem (and, for that matter Miles's) is that they have very good programs at schools that think they should have great programs. Bulldog Nation looks around the East and can't understand how a program that was supposed to be in rebuilding mode and before that a Big 12-2-2+2 refugee were the division champs the last three years. Maybe Richt's replacement will finally get them over the hump and into the SEC championship game and perhaps even the playoffs. Perhaps his replacement will make Dawg fans nostalgic for the days when they regularly played in New Year Bowl games. Meanwhile, Richt will take his pile of money and probably land at one of the programs that has an opening. Virginia or Rutgers or Maryland would be thrilled to land a coach who has had one losing record in 15 years.

ed orgeron at USC, because it actually happened. Eh, Orgeron was an interim coach, not a somebody who'd already held that job successfully for several years. the students loved him though and they played great behind him. It was worth a shot and they hired sark instead. Talk about fuck up. USC was pretty much drowning with what lane kiffin did to them and O was able to pull them out of it.

At this point, it does seem obvious they should have stuck with Orgeron. However, it was an understandable decision at the time. His first head coaching gig, at Ole Miss, was pretty dismal (even if it did allow him to play himself in The Blind Side), and USC is several steps up from that. I don't really blame Trojan officials for being concerned with putting the program in his hands long-term.

Okay, we have a lot of stuff to get to today... This may get Block and Tackle length
Texas Tech @ Texas Playing for the Chancellor's Spurs, Texas's Chris Warren III ran for 276 yards and four touchdowns, but Patrick Mahomes had 372 yards passing to help lead Texas Tech to a fourth quarter victory 48-45 on Thursday night. This is the Texas Longhorns' second consecutive losing season under second-year coach Charlie Strong
Miami @ Pitt Brad Kaaya had another impressive game, throwing for 261 yards and a touchdown. Miami led by twenty points at the half, and held off a Pitt rally to win out 29-24
Navy @ Houston Greg Ward Jr threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns as Houston upset Navy 52-31.
Missouri @ Arkansas Alex Collins ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns to defeat Missouri 28-3 in Gary Pinkell's last game as Missouri's coach. Arkansas has their first winning SEC season since 2011
Washington State @ Washington Miles Gaskin ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns and Jake Browning threw for 203 yards as Washington beat Washington State 45-10
Iowa @ Nebraska Iowa was already going to the Big Ten Championship game, but knew they had to stay undefeated to stay in the playoff hunt. And even though Nebraska had almost twice as many total yards, quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr threw four interceptions and Iowa goes off to meet Michigan State undefeated after beating Nebraska 28-20.
Baylor @ TCU Meeting again in the "Revivalry" for the first time since these two teams were left out in the cold last year. TCU's Trevone Boykin threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns for a game that went into double overtime. TCU wins 28-21.
UCLA @ USC Playing for the Victory Bell and LA bragging rights. UCLA's Josh Rosen was impressive, throwing 227 yards and a touchdown, but also two interceptions. Rosen is going to have a great career at UCLA, but this year USC had them beat. Cody Kessler threw for 175 and two touchdowns as the Trojans win 40-21
Colorado @ Utah In the Rumble in the Rockies, Utah running back Joe Williams ran for 187 yards and a touchdown as the Utes hold off Colorado 20-14
Notre Dame @ Stanford It was a close game for Legends Trophy. DeShone Kiser capped off an impressive year by throwing 234 yards, but Kevin Hogan stepped up, throwing for 269 yards and four touchdowns, including driving into Notre Dame territory with thirty seconds left to give Conrad Ukropina a chance for 45 yard Field Goal as time expired. The Cardinal wins 38-36, spoiling the Irish's playoff hopes
North Carolina @ North Carolina State Jacoby Brissett threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the running game for North Carolina that won the game, Elijah Hood ran for 220 yards and two touchdown while T.J. Logan ran for 100 yards and two more touchdowns as the Tarheels beat the Wolfpak 45-34 on their way to face Clemson in the ACC Championship Game.
Virginia Tech @ Virginia Quarterback Michael Brewer threw 237 yards and two touchdowns to win the Commonwealth Cup one last time for Frank Beamer. Joey Slye kicked a 41-yard field goal with 1:38 left. 23-20
Alabama @ Auburn Derrick Henry secures his Heisman front runner status by running for 271 yards and a touchdown as Alabama wins the Iron Bowl 29-13.
Georgia @ Georgia Tech Grayson Lambert threw for 224 yards to win the Governor's Cup 13-7, but it didn't save Mark Richt's job. He was fired for not winning the right games (i.e. Alabama and Florida)
Oklahoma @ Oklahoma State Bedlam. Cowboy Quarterback J.W. Walsh threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, but the Sooners had the whole package. Baker Mayfield threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and ran a third one in. They also had a great running game with Joe Mixon running for 136 and Samaje Perine for 131. They each had two touchdowns a piece as the Sooners win 58-23, clinching the Big 12 championship and solidifying their place in the playoffs.
Iowa State @ West Virginia. Skyler Howard threw for 202 yards as the Mountaineers' defense kept the Cyclones out of the end zone 30-6.
Ohio State @ Michigan The "Big Game." It was a good game for Jake Ruddock, throwing for 263 yards and a touchdown, but it was a better game for Ezekiel Elliott who kept his mouth shut and ran for 214 yards and two touchdown as the Buckeyes easily won 42-13.
Louisville @ Kentucky Lamar Jackson accounted for 316 yards and three touchdowns both in the air and on the ground as Louisville won the Governor's Cup 38-24.
Clemson @ South Carolina Deshaun Watson threw for 279 yards and ran for 114 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers beat the Gamecocks in the Palmetto Bowl 37-32. No doubt Clemson had the ACC Championship game against UNC on their minds.
SMU @ Memphis Paxton Lynch threw seven touchdown passes in the first have, setting a FBS record and shutting out SMU 63-0.
Penn State @ Michigan State Playing for the Land Grant Trophy Christian Hackenberg looked good throwing for 257 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions, but Conner Cook looked better throwing for 248 and three touchdowns, sending the Spartans to face Iowa in the Big Ten Championship and possibly a playoff bid. 55-16
Vanderbilt @ Tennessee- Joshua Dobbs threw two touchdown passes to Von Pearson and ran for a third score as The Volunteers beat Vanderbilt 53-28.
Kansas State @ Kansas Joe Hubener threw for 133 yards and ran for 88 more as the Wildcats beat the Jayhawks for the Governor's Cup 45-14.
Ole Miss @ Mississippi State In the Egg Bowl Ole Miss's Chad Kelly and Mississippi State's Dak Prescott were fairly evenly matched if you look at the numbers, but the Rebels led early and the Bulldogs never seemed to catch up 38-27.
Texas A&M @ LSU Leonard Fournette ran for 159 yards as the Tigers beat the Aggies 19-7. Although there were rumors that Les Miles might be out of a job this year the University announced that they were not changing coaches this year.
Florida @ Florida State Even though I try to remain unbiased when I write this. I just can't help it. The Gator's vaunted defense failed to stop Sean Maguire from throwing 160 yards and a touchdown, or kept Dalvin Cook for running for 183 yards and two touchdowns. By the fourth quarter the defense looked tired and the Florida offense failed to score, their only points coming from a safety. 27-2. I would like to point out the Florida State has beaten both Florida and Miami for three years in a row. Florida now has to go and face Alabama in the SEC Championship game, which says something about the SEC East.
This Week in Wacky Trophies: Wisconsin @ Minnesota Dare Ogunbowale ran for 155 yards as Wisconsin won Paul Bunyan's Axe 31-21.
This week in Wacky Trophies: Indiana @ Purdue Nate Sudfeld threw for four touchdowns and Devine Redding ran for a career-high 144 yards as Indiana won the Old Oaken Bucket 54-36
This week in Wacky Trophies: Northwestern @ Illinois Justin Jackson ran for 172 yards as the Wildcats won the Land Of Lincoln Trophy 24-14. (It's Lincoln's hat)
This Week in Wacky Trophies (Huh? edition): Oregon State @ Oregon Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns to help the Ducks win the "Civil War" Platypus Trophy 52-42
This week in wacky Trophies (deluxe edition): Kent State @ Akron The Akron Zips shut out the Kent State Golden Flashes 20-0 to win the wagon wheel trophy.
Elsewhere around the league: South Florida beat UCF 44-3, Temple beat Connecticut 27-3, Syracuse beat Boston College 20-17, Duke beat Wake forest 27-21, and California beat Arizona State 48-46
In the polls: In the AP poll, Oklahoma jumped to 3, Ohio State and Michigan State rose, while Stanford, UNC, and Florida State jumped into the Top Ten. Notre Dame dropped to 9. Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Florida all fell out of the top ten. The CFP rankings from last night: Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Iowa in the top four, with Michigan State and Ohio State sitting out.
Who needs a coach, or teams whose head coach has been fired or has retired this year (and I'm sure this list will grow and shrink as people are fired and hired after this week, it's been changing by the minute): South Carolina, Miami, Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, Missouri, North Texas, Louisiana- Monroe, Syracuse. Mike London resigns at Virginia, Georgia fired Mark Richt, Rutgers fired Kyle Flood, Justin Fuenta has left Memphis (see below), and Matt Campbell left Toledo (also see below). Chip Kelly has denied talking to anyone about a college position.
Who has a new coach: Justin Fuenta left Memphis to be the new coach at Virginia Tech, and Matt Campbell left Toledo for Iowa State. USC removed the interim tag and announced Clay Helton as their head coach on Monday, Central Florida hires Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost. Alabama's Defensive Coordinator Kirby Smart is rumored to be Georgia's new coach, but they can not announce it until after the SEC Championship game
Next week: Conference Championships! ACC Championship: Clemson vs UNC. SEC Championship: Alabama vs Florida. Big Ten Championship: Iowa vs Michigan State. PAC-12 Championship: Stanford vs USC. Also playing: Baylor @ Texas, Temple @ Houston, West Virginia @ Kansas State
