At this point, it does seem obvious they should have stuck with Orgeron. However, it was an understandable decision at the time. His first head coaching gig, at Ole Miss, was pretty dismal (even if it did allow him to play himself in The Blind Side), and USC is several steps up from that. I don't really blame Trojan officials for being concerned with putting the program in his hands long-term. Yea, hiring Sark was the clear mistake, not necessarily letting Orgeron move on. I think letting him go was a big mistake. College coaching is half recruiting and O could have been great behind the resources at USC.

This Week in Wacky Trophies (Huh? edition): Oregon State @ Oregon Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns to help the Ducks win the "Civil War" Platypus Trophy 52-42 Ha, that's great! The platypus is basically part duck, part beaver (with a side order of venomous snake).

As far as the SC coaching search:
Current interim coach Shawn Elliot interviewed yesterday; OU OC Lincoln Reilly is interviewing today and Will Muschamp is supposedly interviewing in the next 24 hours.
I like Reilly's youth and offense style but I worry about his ability to hire a staff and recruit the South East. Muschamp maybe our best bet and several articles indicating he's learned his lessons offensively from Florida make me optimistic. Of course neither is our first choice but I think either would be good picks. Elliot can stay but go back to position coach.

No idea if there even is a Mark Campbell. North Texas's coach was Dan McCarney, not that it really matters.
Also, it now sounds like Toledo OC Jason Candle will be promoted to the head job there, instead of coming with Campbell to Iowa State as originally thought.

Lifemate was in the Redcoat Marching Band at UGA. You can take the kid out of the band, but you can't take the band out of the kid: all I'm hearing about is the good ol' days when Mark Richt used to come over and thank the band for their support in person.
Seriously though, I hope our new coach isn't an obvious asshole like so many of them appear on TV.

Hell, even Gene Chizik came by the marching band field to say hi and thanks before the season started when he was at Iowa State, and that guy didn't even try to hide how much of an asshole he was.

Richt has always been Mr. Cool on the sidelines, and I appreciated that we didn't have a Saban or a Spurrier showing his ass. In fact, I wonder whether that attitude didn't hurt Richt with the Alumni who control everything, like they wished for a howling warrior. It's not like it's the first time there was talk of canning him, either; that was going on since 2009.

I can't be the only one super annoyed by (but begrudgingly resigned to planning my night around) the first playoff round being scheduled on New Year's Eve, right?

I know there's speculation that ESPN, pissed that their repeated requests to not have those games played NYE, intentionally made a terrible commercial. I doubt that's true, but it's a fun rumor. I really, really don't understand the CFP people's insistence on trying to make NYE football a thing. New Year's Day bowl games worked great as a tradition because everybody was too hung over to leave their couches anyway. Nobody but the hardcore college football fans or the school's in the playoff wants to plan their night around a bunch of bowl games.

Let's not forget that, for a lot of people, NYE is a work day (my office will be open). The first of the two semi-final games is scheduled to kick off at 4:00 EST. That's 1:00 on the west coast. Since no west coast team will be playing (barring a North Carolina victory tomorrow that lets Stanford leapfrog to #4), who is going to be watching west of the Rockies? Heck, how many people outside of the two schools' fan bases will be watching east of the Rockies? I'm probably not going to be getting home until 5:30 CST, by which time the game should be deep in the second half. If it's a close game, I'll turn it on. If it's not, I'll find something else to do. At that will what happens all over the country.

Of course they'll see that in the ratings and likely make adjustments here on out

Last year the NYE were all non-playoff bowl games, right? I could see them just going back to that, although even that seems like needlessly sandbagging the ratings of some big-time bowl games.

Mizzou has decided to stay in-house and hired DC Barry Odom to replace Gary Pinkel. If Georgia does indeed hire Kirby Smart, that will be two SEC East schools hiring DC's with no head coaching experience.

Yeah, the Rose Bowl, which was one of the semis last year, put its foot down and refused to budge off of New Year's Day. The Cotton and the Orange don't have the clout that the Rose does, so to NYE they go, where they'll probably attract a fraction of the audience the Rose and Sugar Bowls got last year.
