Alright. Last batch. There's loads more of this stuff, but you get the gist (and there's only so much of my life I want to give over to uploading images on TinyPic).  No, no. You're not callous at all. (I mainly shared this one to get across that friendships between real people were ended in the griefy aftermath of "Ellie's" "death", largely because of "Harriet's" manipulation)  Oh, Dom's been good to you has he? So if Ellie was not real, how did Dom send pics like the ones mentioned above? A specific request to wear an outfit or a white wig? How do you fake that? They would have to be cropped or 'shopped very quickly. Jesus this sounds like a lot of effort.

Suspect he just had a crop of images from Flickr (or similar) and he'd cued her up with mention of wigs. Or maybe my friend's memory was a bit flaky about it. Anyway, she doesn't know either and hasn't been through all her correspondence with "Ellie" yet. |

So did all of Harriet's friends communicate with her solely by text, fb, twitter, etc? I mean, I realise the answer to that must be a resounding 'yes', but you'd think someone would get suspicious when she never took a call from them or wanted to meet up.

Look at what we've done to ourselves. There's an element of the victim being specifically chosen here (someone who chats via FB a lot and is, in the nicest way, a bit high-drama). But really, who actually calls each other anymore? I'd like to think that if someone texted me to say that someone we both knew had died, I'd actually use the call function, but I can't swear to it. A friend of mine's kid got meningitis soon after birth (survived, btw, with no neurological damage obvious, yet) and I found out by a mutual friend PMing me on facebook. And all my communication I've done with my friend since has been by text, because who wants a really awkward, stilted conversation over the phone? I'll definitely go for a beer with him when I'm up that way (I'm better at talking with people in person) but who knows when that'll be. AVC (etc) meet ups don't get organised very often, and even then it's easy to come up with an excuse to drop out (such as "dying in a car crash"). The person on the other side of these FB convos lives in the Midwest, so it's not like NYC is a short journey away. And I just assumed that some of the people who posted on Dom or Harriet's FB feed were meatspace friends. Hey, I just remembered that I was going to meet up with "Harriet" and "Dom" when they were over here for Christmas a couple of years ago, but lo and behold we couldn't arrange a day that worked for us both. |

Yeah....I still haven't really processed all this I don't think. Me and Kirk from AVC used to have simultaneous conversations with Dom and Harriet on Twitter every single morning. Like, for years. I spent those same years talking to both of them in DMs, Dom wanting to kill himself and Harriet upset because of that and wanting to divorce him. I gave that fucking creep my phone number and told him to call me any time. I felt a MASSIVE amount of guilt when he died because I had kind of reached a cutoff point with his emotional vampirism like 6 months before that and mostly stopped talking to him. The one time I visited NYC a few years ago, I tried to plan a meetup with them but of course it didn't happen. Kirk tried to get them to meet him a few times.
Speaking objectively, though, I'll say, if he would have put all of this energy into a book or something, he'd probably be a pretty great writer.

Was Ellie the same Ellie who used to post here? EllieShe was MPDGish, I don't think anyone actually met her, and had some drama. To be fair, AV Club: Had Some Dramais a fair descriptor of almost everything in the comments in general, but still. So I know I haven't been posting over here in the New World much, but I caught wind of this and as a licensed mental health counselor in real life let me just say HOLY SHIT. I have never encountered anything this elaborate even in my readings, damn.
I have only the most tangential connection to this in I remember Scrawler personal messaging me in distress because she was worried he might kill himself based on some posts and wanted my advice on how to help. That was a good year or more before the actual "suicide."
I wonder what else we're going to keep finding.

The lack of phone communication is a pretty big cultural shift. When I was in high school and college in the 80s and 90s, I spent hours on the phone every day. Now I'll go days without making a call, and even longer if you don't count business calls. |
