The Kinja guy in the AVC thread is unbelievably smug. Just incredibly clueless. Seriously. I'm just like: wow, textbook how not to do it

Well, that was both fun and a reiteration of why I quit AV Club.

Eh, Kinja Guy is just doing his job. Not like he's the President of Kinja or doing the switch to spite anyone, so calling him a pompous dickhead or hoping he gets fired over it seems a bit far. Sure some of his comments seem like he's trying to get the feel of the room but I wouldn't call it nefarious. Also yes I am enjoying my new career in the Kinja Transition PR Department.
Anger is expected even though I personally don't understand it, having not commented on the AVC in around two years. Twitter, AVCAD, and this website still exist for more personal interaction if you'd like now that the new system seems designed for more straight-forward conversations. Something something where there's a will there's a way

Eh, Kinja Guy is just doing his job. He's failing abysmally at doing his job. I'm still going to call him out as smug, because he's so convinced that Kinja is the One True Way and why don't we just SEE it, even though there are legitimate complaints about the software. I know it's his job on the line, but it rubs me the wrong way.

Keep in mind, it's not that the AV Club is trying out a new comment system that they hope will be an improvement. It's that the AV Club has been forced to get in line with everything else the parent company owns. On a certain level, they really don't care what this does to the site, because they won't undo it. Factoring that in, they don't feel any real need to sell us on it. They've made it clear, time and time again, that they don't consider us that important.

I sympathize with Sean and Laura, because they're just stuck with this. I've got very little sympathy with "Thanks for your feedback! We'll definitely look into this! But actually we won't because we think the thing our users have been asking us for for years is stupid!" Ernie, because one of the things I do all day in my job is reach out to people who use our product to see if they have any suggestions, and if I responded to their suggestions the way Ernie is (especially if I sustained it over several years, as someone pointed out that he has) it would A) reveal that I had no idea how product development works and B) get me fired.

There's a sad sense of inevitability about the whole thing to me, like of course it was only a matter of time until the AV Club fucked up bad enough to kill the community and this is coming from a guy who never minded Disqus all that much, but this Kinja shit is the worst, I can't stand the way the comments are squished to the side of the screen, it's a total dealbreaker for me.
One thing's for sure it's going to kill the community, things are never going to be the same after it, let's try to get as many people as we can to register here and let's all promise to keep this place healthy by posting here.

My sympathy for Sean went bye bye the last time they did something like this about how the comment system was changing on the newswire. My reactionary post is somewhere in the blunder thread. I actually chuckled today when he wrote they cared, when they have made it abundantly clear in the past they don't. Also, townhalls go 1 of 2 ways, either it is successful and very informative for those who came, those who didn't they never hear about it. Or someone was way out of their depth and fucked up bigtime and that is all that will be talked about.

I came to the Town Hall late, so I didn't get into any conversation with that Ernie guy, but reading through: Whew! This is why you don't let IT guys talk to customers and consumers. Frohman's right, that he's just doing his job in a sense, and I'm sure he's really constrained in what he can say because... well, vague promises aside, Kinja's not getting threaded comments. But the dude could not read a room to save his life. When you're on the "A" side of a "Q and A" with a concerned consumer, then's not really the time to crack wise. That's the job of the commenters.
My dad has the same instinct, to make a joke without taking into account others' emotions. He did it when an expensive vacation my wife and I were planning was ruined. And I love him, but I almost told him to leave my house.
And I don't love Ernie. Just answer the questions as best you can, be respectful, and know the priorities of your consumer base before saying such dips*** things as "keeping comment threads from going too off-topic is a feature, not a bug!" (para)

Does anyone else get the feeling that all these big internet media companies would really rather not let you comment at all? imdb got rid of it's message boards, there's a rumor Youtube will get rid of comments next, it seems like if a site does have comments they make it purposely unpleasant to use to dissuade you from using it.
I can understand why it's happening, the internet has become a toxic place in recent years what with the whole right wing backlash to everything, but it's a shame when a worthwhile community gets swept out along with everything else.

I kinda think it's more that they can't be bothered to put time or resources into supporting comments. So on one end, you get what's happening at the AVC: There was a good community, but they got tired of paying for Disqus and don't care TOO much about throwing the commenters out in the cold. On the other, you get places like Youtube, where they decide the whole thing is more trouble than it's worth, possibly because of Alt-Right asses, and even though it's implemented they just scrap the feature.

Remember, folks. If you stay on topic, you have nothing to fear.
As the approachable IT guy generally tasked with talking to the norms, Ernie my man, you need to work on that desk-side manner. I know it sucks shilling for an inferior product, but you can do better than that.
On a side note, I hope "Kinja Ernie" becomes a long running gag. At least we'll get something out of this.

Honestly even if commenting was flawless I just hate hate hate the kinja design so much as a former design/usability person that I've stopped reading any site that uses it or clones thereof.

Don't worry about Kinja! They will totally look into considering ways to incorporate parts of our suggestions. Except nested comments because it's so fucking HARD.

For all of Disqus' flaws, and there are many, it's easy to incorporate conversant comment sections into content-first sites by using it. When it's not, you know, glitching out and hiding entire comment threads or logging you out at random or eating comments instead of publishing them, I mean.

GIFs already made a stunning return as a viable file extension so I guess bring on message boards and content sites and the AOL guy screaming, "YOU GOT MAIL!"
