It is truly sad to me that the AV Club is losing everything that made it so great for so long. I used to go there several times a day every day. I lurked in the comments for a while, and then started posting because of Zack's Star Trek reviews. The writer exodus in 2013 was really bad. The loss of paginated comments was also bad. Those two things hurt the quality of the content and the quality of the commenting community.
I barely go to the AV Club now. Basically just for the occasional movie review. Don't think I've commented more than a few times all year.
Kinja is mostly awful, so this basically feels like the end of commenting community there. Alas.

Yes congrats on tracking down the random Kinja IT guy you've decided to harass for not personally adding nested replies or something.

Yeah, if you read the "thread," Ernie said verbatim he couldn't wait for the commentariat to find their way to that thread (granted, he was probably being sarcastic or facetious), and Ben's comment was chiding at worst. Hardly harassment.

Their movie reviews are mostly terrible. Ignatiy Vishnevetsky is great. Are you sure about that? He seems pretentious to me, and I don't trust his judgment. Right now he's yelling about Nocturama and the NY Times says it's a piece of shit and I'm like 100% sure I'd agree with the Times.

I like his reviews. as a plebe who knows next to nothing about film criticism on any meaningful level, he does a pretty good job of contextualizing things with a solid amount of depth and insight. perhaps he overextends a bit into navel-gazing territory, but I don't mind. I'd rather take overly earnest critiques with depth than a barrage of fluff pieces or surface level analysis, but that's perhaps as much a function of the particular type or genre of whatever's being picked apart?

Well, IV has his blind spots and eccentricities, but I feel like I've at least gotten to know and account for them. Like, his rational thinking skills get warped when James Gray makes a movie, just like Roger Ebert's thinking skills get warped when a movie has lots and lots of bouncy boobs. I appreciate IV's book reviews (Arabia Felix is a super fantastic, juicy book that I wouldn't have noticed without him) about as much as his movie reviews.

I thought Ernie came across fine, honestly. Sure, he tried to match AVC snarktone and that's not what a lot of people wanted from him - but it was an understandable idea. In response to whoever said it: as a web programmer I can fuckin' guarantee that no one at Gawker wants to do away with comments. They're tremendous click-drivers. You poor fools who keep clicking back to keep track of a conversation, you're just pouring money into the overload coffers. (Except we're all using adblocker, so womp womp.) Nesting conversations would probably be a platform-wide change, which means that everyone on every other Gawker site would be enraged because their world was changing. It's obviously better, but, y'know, what we're seeing with AVC is a long process of selling out to corporate overlords, with a corresponding dip in how convenient they are for their specific users and also in quality of content. I mean, what, are you guys actually going there for some reason these days? Their movie reviews are mostly terrible. Their TV recaps have honestly never been very good. Their book reviews are a joke. Is it just Sean O'Neal? I got off track here. My general point is, AVC some years ago: great; AVC the past few years: bad; AVC in the future: worse. That's how that goes. I'm checking your math and finding that actually, every single one of them was ruled 100 percent perfect by the Supreme Court, at least until June 2014, when everything mysteriously and suddenly went to hell.

I, for one, was a TV Club acolyte until roughly 3 years ago or so, when the TO was created. I can't say why I stopped going. *brownnosebrownnosebrownnose*

I think we've got this all wrong. Looked at in context, The AV Club is clearly honouring our love of Community by granting us a commenting system which runs on the same principles as MeowMeowBeenz.

It's . . . soulless. I didn't even realize I was looking at the AVC. Thank you - that's exactly what I was thinking, too. It looks like an unmodified, generic template. It doesn't even have a recognizable logo like a lot of the other Kinja sites like Kotaku or io9. I know that's the AVC logo but removed from basically all of their other site styling it looks really nondescript to me. I realize it's probably not finished or whatever but it just looks so bland and forgettable.
