I think most people know this already, but, just to repeat: I guess I'll still be on the site - I spend some time on those sites already, primarily io9 - but the comment system is flat-out terrible, and I say that as someone out of the greys on the places I spend my time there. So the community will be, if not killed completely, at least seriously whittled down. And it will be incredibly difficult to deal with the trolls and troll-like lifeforms who periodically invade; there will be no way to block Fatman, for instance. So where are people going to go? There's here, there's the Avocado, but are there any other sites people suggest? Birthmoviesdeath.com has gotten better since Faraci left, but is no AV Club. Some people have suggested pajiba, but that's blocked for me at work, and I suspect I'm not the only one. I kind of hate to see everything die, but is it inescapable at this point? I've been reading the AV Club since the late 90s, and I hate to see it go. So now what?

Kinja sucks. I wonder if they'll keep the feature where comments have to be approved before they appear. They had some experience with troll armies posting porn and stuff a few years ago and they locked down comments pretty hard. But the fact that you have to expand comment trees to read anything is just... Good for the people who can keep up with it, though. It's been years since I posted on io9, fleshbot or Kotaku, and I used to post there pretty regularly in the pre-kinja days.

I don't post a lot at the AVC, but I do still enjoy it when I do, and I hate the thought of that being rendered unusable. What I will have even worse is if we lose the comments and history that is already there. There are so many weird little artifacts hidden among the articles, and such wonderfully bizarre threads floating around there that it will be a destruction of art if they disappear. Is there any practical way to download comment threads to preserve them for history? It's like they are lighting the torches to burn down the library.

I'd be willing to give Birth.Movies.Death another shot if a lot if the community migrates over there (and regardless of the circumstances of his departure no more Faraci is a major selling point.)

I've been over there for a while, at least intermittently, and there are handful of people I see there and at TOC (Nerd in the Basement and GAC [aka Gillian Anderson Cooper] lap to mind). I suspect we'll scatter, though, except for patches (like here and the Avocado), and those of us who Kinja it (which I do, but I don't post a fraction as much there).

I'm okay with Kinja being unusable, I could do well to spend less time there anyway. What I'm concerned about is losing the ability to go back and read my old comments and nod and smile sagely at the wisdom contained therein.

I won't use Kinja, so I'll be spending a lot more time here and on The Avocado. I should do the latter anyway, considering I own the damn place.

I don't care about my own comments all that much, but I get a lot out of reading the comments on pop culture I didn't take part of during the original run. Catching up on a show two or three years after the fact, and going through old TV Club articles and comments is about the closest to 'discussing what I've watched' I'm going to get, and they've helped me appreciate things about the shows that I'd initially dismissed.

Yeah; part of the reason I've barely been here for months is that I'm still so attached to mothership traditions (mainly the TI/RD, but also PCW, though I've been getting to bed earlier recently and that actually feels really good) and some of the newer dedicated threads at the Avocado have become traditions in themselves (Book Nook, Creative Endeavors, History). It'd be good to hang out here more, and part of me rejoices in a potential liberation from the shitshow so much of the mothership has become, but it's been such a great (and occasionally therapeutic) place to hang that I'll doubtless grieve when the hammer falls.

It appears that the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive takes at least one snapshot of the AV Club and its articles most days, and the comment sections are included in those snapshots. So, assuming that what's in the Archive stays in the Archive, most of the old comments will still be accessible.

When AVC was blocked at my old, terrible job, this was the only way I could read their articles, at least a couple hours after they were posted.

Not gonna lie, I will probably just abandon the site completely after it goes Kinja, I don't comment much anymore period but I can't stand any of their sites that use it even to read the article in the first place.

I haven't commented in months (for whatever reason, my login just stopped working and after I didn't get a response from their general help email, I realized I didn't care). I never peruse the site anymore and only visit maybe once a month to look at a specific review or check out the Staff Picks or a Will Harris Random Roles. I guess I'm fine with this switch, but I'm sad to hear the comments won't be as easily accessible as they were before. I loved checking out classic comments every few months, like ChocoTaco's story of his sister-in-law pooping on his deck. Of course, I also across-the-board cringe at every one of my own old comments that I stumble upon.
If everyone seems to migrate to a different site, I'll definitely follow!

Do you think there will be any kind of warning, or one morning will I get up and be asked for a new login ID when I open it up?

They'll be holding a "town hall" Newswire to announce and answer questions about the Kinja switch tomorrow (Tuesday the 8th) at 2-3:30 Central time.
Please note that this was shared with me in an email from Laura Browning, who asked that we please keep that information here and on the AVCAD and NOT share it on the Mothership until the actual Newswire goes up. So please be cool and don't repost this on the AVC.

If I recall, that's what we said the last time they fucked with the comments. And it was true and that's what happened and here we are!

Here's the link to the "town hall", in case you need it.If you’re a regular reader here, chances are you’ve already heard that The A.V. Club will soon be switching its format to Kinja. Having read your comments and received your emails, one thing is clear: Even for a site that’s weathered several complete overhauls, there’s been a lot of apprehension about this change, specifically. We haven’t been ignoring that unease. We just wanted to wait until we had enough information to address it accurately. After all, this is a big change for us as well. "We know you weren't happy when we left your Mom for Disqus, but you've gotten used to that, haven't you? And you'll get used to your new, new Mommy, too!"

Before the town hall, I was willing to give it a chance. Now...I'm not quite sure how the town hall that was supposed to alleviate our fears has actually made things worse.
