This is interesting.... it seems that, at least for now, there are some backdoor links to Discus discussions for current AVC articles Such as this one for the current "pop culture weekend
Credit for my learning this goes to @werdup over at the TOC, who linked to it. That's not a backdoor for current articles, it's a separate Disqus group that a few people from the AVC set up to essentially mirror some of the recurring stuff - it was started for WOT (and they do a very good, very detailed WOT), but Velocirapstar does a political one every day now, and I think this is the first time they did a "Discuss your pop culture weekend" one. Ah, again, interesting. I have a folder filled with links to various AVC offshoots, maybe a dozen or so, active or defunct. While it's a shame things get splintered, it's nice that a lot of people seem committed to keeping the community alive in different forms.

How long did The Dissolve last? Let's be positive, cause I don't actually wish unemployment upon any of them (except for Kinja Ernie, but he's gonna get out easy, being the son of Satan and all that... no-one want's to fire Denton's relatives) so I'll go 2 years. If they're still getting clicks, from the Gawker crowd or wherever, isn't that more important to the corporate masters than the number of comments? Unless how terrible it looks is leading to less clicks, which I can certainly see and vouch for myself. I usually use Quantcast to get a baseline for how much traffic a site is getting. It's not a GREAT measure, and sites will have better numbers internally. But it's also not bad, and it's free. And on Quantcast, AVC is doing just fine. It's fallen off a bit since the Kinja switch, but you could just as easily attribute that to the combination of Labor Day weekend and the end of Game of Thrones. It is not off by any massive amount. ETA: This is also quite a bit better than the traffic we pulled when I was there. The site has obviously switched to a Facebook-first model, but that's because that's where the traffic is.

The site has obviously switched to a Facebook-first model, but that's because that's where the traffic is. True, itβs been very facebook oriented for a while and while I really really resent the concept of facebook as the conduit of the internet, thatβs how it is for many sites. We knew the site wouldnβt be hurt, we knew we made up a tiny if vocal percentage of their views and while we had value to the writers, we do not sustain a site the size of TOC alone. Our loss is their margin of error when they look at their analytics, thatβs what we represent in raw numbers. What they lost in a community is more than replaced by folk floating in from other Kinja sites and yeah, itβs like finding your treehouse now has some rougher kids in it now and they painted over our mural. One thing Iβve noticed is a real turndown in the amount of video on the site. If it did nothing else, it at least broke up the visual monotony and maybe its my ad blocker being hinky with Kinja sites but I donβt see them anymore.

Oh my god, I just pulled an old Sopranos review and the archived comments were back! They did it! It really did feel hollow without old comments around on those articles.

Now I have to rewatch all seven seasons of GoT so that this time when I read the expert and newbie reviews I can read the comments too. Goddammit and I was finally free.

I was trying to read the comments on the Breaking Bad Very Special Episode and I got kicked back up to to the top of the page because an ad wanted to play.

Kinja is the site-killer.
Kinja is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I was scrolling through the front page on my phone this morning, and within 20 seconds, was cock-blocked by a full-page ad that said it would re-direct me to The AV Club in 5 seconds.
It took 20 seconds.
If this was any other website and I were visiting for the first time, I would never come back. Eventually, that goodwill is going to wear thin with their audience if they keep the website awash in garbage at this rate.

Literally every time I try to open a page on mobile I get a "Join Kinja!" pop-up. My kinja/disqus account links to a burner email that I don't even have on my phone, so if I try to log in it tries to set up a new Kinja account for my primary email, and because Kinja's authentication system blows there's no way to just tell it "this is the email address associated with my account," so on mobile the AVC is completely unusable.

Wow, yeah, it actually worked.
Of course, if you hadn't posted the link here there is approximately zero percent chance I'd ever have seen the thread thanks to the new site format.

...well, that's a nice picture of Mark Ruffalo, you've got there! Kinja is the little-death that brings total obliteration. Fear is the little death that plays a five-stringed fiddle.

Thanks for posting that, I never would've seen it either. Seems to have worked Also I sort of hilariously got the infinity symbol for number of replies/notifications, then.

So it appears I've been followed by a porn spambot. Is there no way to report them? I've clicked on their profile and it's just a link to a cam site, which I am assured is hot. But I'm not seeing a report option anywhere on their profile, and they haven't posted anything, so I can't report their posts.

Kinja support has stopped answering my emails on the issue so I guess my account is gone.

Is it just me or does every comment section now devolve into fanboi bickering almost immediately? Now? That's fair, but there used to be some intelligent dialog first before the "fuck you, you're wrong, you should just leave" shtick started. I dunno. Just seems angrier. Maybe because it isn't being balanced out.

Is it just me or does every comment section now devolve into fanboi bickering almost immediately? KinjaIn all seriousness, that's what it is best suited for from a commenting perspective. Disqus was a better place for actual conversations and/or silly jokes that evolved into colonies of silly jokes. The new environment doesn't support those life forms as easily.

Even on the actual good articles (largely found via means other than the actual website), which still produce decent comments, itβs striking just how atomized the comments are. Nothing ever builds to anything.

I just peeked (first time today!) and there aren't any comments on the latest Comics Panel (or whatever they're calling it now).
