That account is gone now. However they told me they don’t IP ban because they don’t “keep track of that stuff”. I asked them what else they plan to do since this person will obviously just keep coming back. "Don't keep track of that stuff" Just, wow. I don't even know what to say to that. I'm so sorry this is happening, and Kinja should be launched into the sun.

The highlighted comment on one of the Weinstein posts is a really nicely disgusting guy whose viewpoint is "you're all kidding yourselves if you say you wouldn't do the exact same thing he did if you were in his position," because Kinja automatically makes comments with a lot of responses rise to the top. When this is pointed out on another Weinstein post, O'Neal's response is basically "sorry you hate Kinja, but that's how it works. If you don't like it, flag it." The timestamp on that dude's comment is yesterday at 1:10 AM (on my computer, at least - I don't know how Kinja does timezones), and it's still up. Pretty sure it's probably been flagged to moderators more than once by now, Sean, and yet it's still up as the most-visible comment. I initially resisted going over because of the hassle of the burner account, lack of clear directions, bugs, etc. etc. I briefly flirted with the idea of just biting the bullet and creating an account to make the occasional comment on an article. The shit described above is why I refuse to. Yeah my dumb little boycott won't make an iota of difference, but a site that says "we don't block IPs" regarding someone who is clearly stalking, doxxing, etc. and then this comment which is basically "quit yer crying you big crybaby. You don't like it then go elsewhere." while at the same time doing nothing at all to address the actual reasonable concern being expressed? Yeah, fuck that. I'm putting them on the same list as Joss Whedon and Chick Fil-A.

The comments thread under the Courtney Love article is making me kind of ill. I miss downvoting sometimes.

Sometimes, glimmers of the old commentariat still shine through.
There's the Richard Spencer article. It has 84 comments, pretty high for an article these days. Out of morbid curiosity, I click over, expecting it to be swarming with trolls and "well actually"s. Instead, to my relief, the lion's share of comments are a debate and discussion about the Defiant on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

If I can read multiple comment threads to completion during my lunch break, then something has definitely gone terribly wrong.

i’m staying away, it’s like the poison is merely spreading and i don’t feel like it’s a worthwhile place to be anymore especially not after MLA finding she can be impersonated with impunity.

I haven't seen anyone impersonating MLA, but it's hard to tell with this effed up comments section.

I gave it a good, honest try and I just couldn't get into it. The spell has been broken. I still read what people write when I manage to wander over there, but it's hardly worth the effort to participate, let alone refresh to see if any new posts have cropped up.

That account is gone now. However they told me they don’t IP ban because they don’t “keep track of that stuff”. I asked them what else they plan to do since this person will obviously just keep coming back. One of their comments was a rather pointed threat about "teaching a lesson" and their intent to keep doing it. It's just so strange that in 2017 that Kinja, a relatively new platform, explicitly doesn't have a mechanism to handle this sort of situation nor do they apparently intend to, but then again maybe modern comment systems don't do this because, as people have pointed out, comment systems are on their way out and this is the new normal. Even so I'd think this would be a huge potential legal liability for them. I also don't understand how having an IP ban system isn't the most expedient option to save their moderation / support team time and effort from playing repeated whack-a-mole with asshats and deranged folks. plus the legal angle... plus I don't buy for a second that they don't have a means of keeping track of that. I would think that information is readily available, they're just not doing anything with it. source: am a very lazy IT guy, yet still aware that a ludicrous amount of automatic logging information is on tap if needed... even if I'm not sure what to do with it.

But on the other hand, device bans are super effective on mobile, so I suspect they just suck.

I kinda wish Onion just broke off from Univision and decided to go into a pay model like how McSweeny's is trying to. It'd probably do a lot of good faith to say that the traditional readers and commenters are who get to be their focus, not advertisers and Facebook being their main source of traffic (which is so severely fucked up, I'm not sure how any site agreed to let another site be the intermediary but that's a rant for another day) but I clearly live in a world of candyfloss and kittens.

I'm okay with Kinja being unusable, I could do well to spend less time there anyway. What I'm concerned about is losing the ability to go back and read my old comments and nod and smile sagely at the wisdom contained therein. Uhhh tolerabilityindex.freeforums.net/post/276968/thread

Uhhh tolerabilityindex.freeforums.net/post/276968/threadI won't use Kinja, so I'll be spending a lot more time here and on The Avocado. I should do the latter anyway, considering I own the damn place.

I keep going back and trying to read the comments (old habits die hard, I guess) and there is just some amazingly terrible stuff going on from my (admittedly very liberal) perspective. I miss the days where the billionaire-blowers in this thread would have been downvoted into oblivion, for example.

I got an account over there and have posted on a couple TV Club articles, but the site design is so goddamn ugly, and kinja as a commenting platform so impossible to use, that I just gave up. That place is absolutely horrible now and I see no need to revisit it. I've even deleted it from my bookmarks bar, where it's happily sat for the better part of a decade. Damn you, Univision!

I blame Kinja for this: why is every third article on TOC a video?

Aukerman is Lobsters confirmed So many people making comments in the replies to him that only fellow A.V. Clubbers would know that I wonder how many of the replies are actually folks we'd recognize instantly under other names...

I just logged into Disqus for the first time in months and my goodbye post on AVC is still getting upvotes. I guess people are specifically looking for the archived Disqus page just to read the comments? It's quite interesting.
And for the record, my final comment was "BUTT".
