This is a fascinating story about Nance Legins-Costley, a black indentured servant in supposedly "free" Illinois in the mid 1800's, her struggle for freedom, how a young lawyer/legislator named Abraham Lincoln helped her win her freedom in 1841, and how her and Lincoln's talks influenced the future president and helped solidify his anti-slavery stance. It also goes into some very interesting details of her later life, and in the lives of some of her decedents.
The headline refers to the fact that the cemetery she was interred in with 3000 others, was closed and abandoned in 1905, and in deep disrepair to the point of being almost unrecognizable, was paved over during a city expansion in the 1930's. While this is a true injustice to the people buried there, it is mostly a sad footnote to the incredible life and spirit of Nance Legins-Costley, and her unrecognized contributions to history.
Her story should be a movie.

I keep getting a Kindle ad for something called "The Last Lieutenant" and now I want somebody to write something called "The Last Lieutenant On The Lieut". I don't know if it would annoy British or USAan people more, but either way I'm happy.

More proof that I've gotten addicted to the mobius-reactionary qualities of the Trump Era and can't quite break out: Someone on Nextdoor (which is of course a hotbed of garden-variety lunacy already) posted some images (the word "images" in quotes) from NASA Perseverance. I clicked eagerly expecting some conspiracy shit to dunk on. But no, the guy's just excited about the space program. Goddamnit, conform to my narrative...anyway, here's the link to the image.

Last week we had delightful, mostly sunny weather and highs primarily in the 60s. Today it's 33 with wet blowing snow that will probably accumulate an inch or so. GROSS. Lousy Smarch weather.

I am so, so tired of the feelings of rage and hopelessness when there's a racially-motivated hate crime and mass shooting.
Reading the news, I'm reminded of a late-90s episode of PBS' Frontline about Kip Kinkel, the Springfield, OR teenager who killed his parents and 2 people at his school. That episode is likely the most disturbing thing I've ever seen on TV, between the footage taken by the cops entering the household where the parents' bodies were found with an opera song from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack blasting on the stereo, audio of Kinkel after the shootings directly quoting NIN's lyrics "goddamn the noise inside my head", and the interview with Kinkel's older sister in which she seems to believe her parents had it coming.

I think we as a society need to encourage the return of long hair on male professional athletes, preferably as part of a wider movement away from sports being treated as super-serious by the people who play them and towards an increase in showboating, peacocking, and general Joe Namath-esque flamboyance.

I was (possibly mistakenly) under the impression that showboating, peacocking, and flamboyance are still a thing among football players, but this is not as widely appreciated because said football players tend to be of the darker-skinned variety, rendering them somehow undeserving of said mannerisms?

I think the answer to this depends on if you mean on the field, or off the field.

Maybe Dennis Rodman's support of Kim Jong-Un soured people on flamboyant athletes.

Maybe Dennis Rodman's support of Kim Jong-Un soured people on flamboyant athletes. I know I'm questioning my love of competitive horseback-riding (I assume you're talking about Kim here). While I milk this dumb joke, I will say I kind of respect Putin for being a despot who rides an actual trail plug instead of the romance-novel ridiculousness of Kim's horse.

Ha ha, got my Biden Bucks in the mail at long last! Now off to buy 280 transcripts of Nightline! We got a joint stimulus check in the mail last week. But we never got money either time under Trump, when the household had less income. Maybe it was a citizenship thing? Guess I should have thrown my wife under the bus, "Mister Trump! I may be married to a dusky foreigner but I'm still a straight white man!"

I dip water out of the adjacent creek for my garden, and yesterday I accidentally caught two giant tadpoles in my watering can. The first time I poured one out on the ground I thought it was a slug. (They seemed to be fine when I put them back in the creek.) Napping pretty hard there tadpoles, better watch out.

It is perhaps the ultimate Karen move to go into the comments on a cake recipe to complain about the number of calories in the recipe. Congratulations, you’ve discovered the concept of “dessert”!

More fun online tests: measure divergent thinking by coming up with the ten most unrelated nouns you can think of. www.datcreativity.com. First try I got 86.7, 90th percentile. Then after looking at scoring from the first round I pumped it up to 90.9, 97th percentile.
