Somehow, Michelle Forbes returned. Not for terribly long though.
Forbes: “I’m never coming back to Trek, it was fine as a job but I’ll never let it define me like it defines other actors. Homicide and ‘The Big Salad’ are going to be my obituary, not Ro Laren.”
Paramount: “There’s no risk of that…”
Forbes: “Can you guarantee that?”
Paramount: “We can pay you in cash.”
Forbes: “I need guarantees. Is this going to be some kind of, what do those nerds call it, fanjerk?”
Paramount: “The terms usually used are fanwank or circlejerk, ma’am.”
Forbes: “I don’t want to get involved in that.”
Paramount: “The suitcases for the cash are pretty nice too. Tumi.”
Forbes: “So it is circlewank…”
Paramount: “…”
Forbes: “Believe me, I’m glad you value my work, but especially since I’ve managed to avoid all this superhero-telefantasy nonsense for a decade and I don’t want people seeing my face in it now…”
Paramount: “See your face? This is going to be a Paramount+ exclusive!”
Forbes: “Then sign me up, but make it Rimowa.”

The more I think about the Picard finale, the more annoyed I get. The more the writers pull the shit of "the entire galaxy is in danger" and "only our handful of main characters can solve it" the angrier it makes me, and the smaller it makes the show's universe. ALL OF STARFLEET IS THERE? *ALL OF IT?!* So this one day celebration leaves all of your borders and outposts undefended, many of them for WEEKS because of the travel time even at maximum warp? Oh, but that's okay because just like Star Wars none of the newer writers give a shit about in-story established rules of space travel, so you can get anywhere in the fucking galaxy within a few hours by warp/hyperspeed unless it's plot appropriate. "Oh no, the Frontier Day celebration is just a few hours away! Good thing we still have time for two full episodes of running around doing shit before we arrive there just in time because from anywhere else we are at, it's like an hour to Earth!"
THE ENTIRE STARFLEET FLEET is firing on a single starbase, it's a good thing it has the new PLOT SHIELDS that last exactly as long as it takes for the Main Characters to do the Kessel Run Borg Cube run and blow it up from the inside!
Of course as soon as the Queen is killed, everyone under control of the Borg immediately goes back to completely normal! No lingering consequences at all!
This shit was SO DUMB, y'all. SO! DUMB!

Seven spent four seasons recovering from what was done to her as a Borg drone, a journey of physical and emotional hard work to recover her humanity as a survivor of abuse. Picard at the very least got "Family" plus the lingering consequences in both First Contact and here. And yet everyone's suddenly better. Fuck. Off.

Your point about how it makes the universe seem small is the most irritating thing to me. The original TNG wasn't like this.
They are all panicked because all the Federation ships have this Borg tech. Like, call up the Klingons? Their ships have cloaks.
And yeah, we are really leaving the borders unprotected? What other aliens are out there? Can we actually get an update on what is going on with the Klingons? The Cardassians? Ferengi? Like, ANYONE else?

And on a personal level, I feel annoyed they kept giving us a prick tease about "Admiral Janeway being busy at the celebrations" then not getting to the one cameo that might actually make sense in context (Tuvok was lovely but it was Janeway Seven was closest to). Give us the Mulgrew!

Even if so, I can't say I'm exactly thrilled at what ST: PIC has done to Picard.

So episode 1 of Strange New Worlds is out. The show is keeping alive the old Star Trek tradition of so-so fight choreography (minus the Kelvin movies and that episode of Enterprise where the one genetically enhanced human knew wing chun). Overall a decent start to the season.

We binged Prodigy over the weekend, since Paramount Plus is about to pull it, and enjoyed it once they fixed what's his face, who we wanted to strangle the first few episodes. It turned into a solid Star Trek show by the end of the first season. Looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Strange New Worlds S02E01: Didn't put their best foot forward, to be honest. Giving M'Benga and Chapel a heretofore unmentioned badass Klingon war backstory made me audibly groan. I know this is (past its) Peak TV, but seriously, not everyone needs a mysterious or tragic or compelling backstory. M'Benga really can just be a mostly chill dude who joined Starfleet to heal sick people. Really, it's okay. Plus he already had a tragic hook with his sick daughter. You know, the daughter the writers got bored of and ditched midway through season 1? The action scenes were clunky and went on *way* too long, and generally it all felt a little too...Kelvin-Trek to me. Randomly sidelining Pike and Una was yet another odd choice for a season premiere, and continues season 1's worrying tendency of slipping into The Adventures of Baby Spock and Friends. I did really enjoy Carol Kane's new Chief Engineer character, and there was still plenty of SNW charm to go around, but yeah, a bit of a clunker.
S02E02: Now that's more like it. The production design is honestly my favorite part of this show, and I admire the costume designer's herculean effort to make TOS-era dress uniforms look anything besides utterly ridiculous. It's a testament to their skill that they almost succeed, but there's no getting around the costume brooch-ish-ness of those...I think they're supposed to be military decorations? The plot and its resolution are pure 1960's IMPORTANT SOCIAL COMMENTARY, and I find it so refreshing when SNW is willing to lean into the hokey earnestness. Please, going forward: more TOS, less Into Darkness. Please.

The plot and its resolution are pure 1960's IMPORTANT SOCIAL COMMENTARY, and I find it so refreshing when SNW is willing to lean into the hokey earnestness. Please, going forward: more TOS, less Into Darkness. Please. I'm really not feeling the first two episodes at all. I completely agree with your criticism of the first episode. Carol Kane is fun and brings a much-needed injection of random energy (the same way Whoopi did on TNG, albeit in a different manner) but the rest of it was a whole bunch of Klingons I don't give a toss about and trying to rescue another character I don't give a toss about. Weak opener. Episode two was better but still not actually good. That's largely because I'm not a big fan of courtroom dramas (my problem, not the show's) and especially not ones with foregone conclusions (the show's problem, not mine). It strained so very hard to get across boilerplate Trek morality about how prejudice is bad, m'kay, you could hear the seams creaking. Right message, wrong way to deliver it. Good performances all round, to be fair, but beyond that a whole lot of stuff-you've-seen-before done pretty much in exactly the same way you've seen it before. Also, since Number One had practically no character in Season One, it's hard to be that invested in what happens to her beyond the fact that she's One Of The Crew and so nominally someone we're meant to be interested in. Hopefully now the decks have been cleared of S1's hangovers we can get on to the good stuff.

Obviously this means large illegal subsidies for all Trek productions in the city.

While we're on the subject of Toronto, the biggest thing that stood out to me in the episode is that Kirk got pulled over for speeding. In real life the police in the city have greatly lowered enforcement of traffic laws for over a decade in protest of stop and frisk ending (actually it's called carding, the old Soviet harassment technique of demanding to see your papers). I'll accept a fictional bridge to the US over Lake Ontario but cops doing their job is just breaking immersion for me. Also I think there used to be a hovercraft to Rochester NY that went out of business in the 80s that the show could have brought back but I guess attacking a ferry isn't as dramatic.
And this Kirk has grown on me. I like him more than in that Pike time travel episode, possibly because he's not on the Enterprise so I don't have to compare him to Shatner every time I see him.
