I keep meaning to start this thread.
TIL that minor league baseball instituted a rule that in extra inning games each team starts the inning with a player on second base. I guess the idea is to speed up the end of the game, but since it impacts both teams evenly, it certainly did not help speed it up in the game I was at (both teams just scored 1). I left after 11 innings, because I have to work tomorrow.

I'm agnostic, but I'm annoyed that they're still stubbornly resistant to stuff that would actually speed up the pace of play, like pitch clocks and electronic strike zones.

MLB tested pitch clocks during the Arizona Fall League several years ago. It may still be in place, but I don't know because we haven't had a Fall League in a couple years.
When I attended and saw this, the way it was implemented allowed the batters to mess with the pitcher's timing, because the pitch clock kept going even when the batter wasn't in the box. Several hot prospect pitchers got called for violating this, even thought the batter didn't get into the box until the last couple seconds.
So, MLB would need to be sure to update that policy if they implement it.

TIL (well, yesterday but it WAS new to me), thanks to the Shoutbox, that birds are unaffected by capsaicin, so some birdseed mixes are coated with it or have hot peppers mixed in to deter other animals from eating it.

www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/08/210831131407.htm"Mechanical energy -- such as the kinetic energy of wind, waves, body movement and vibrations from motors -- is abundant," says Michael Dickey, corresponding author of a paper on the work and Camille & Henry Dreyfus Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State. "We have created a device that can turn this type of mechanical motion into electricity. And one of its remarkable attributes is that it works perfectly well underwater."
The heart of the energy harvester is a liquid metal alloy of gallium and indium. The alloy is encased in a hydrogel -- a soft, elastic polymer swollen with water.
The water in the hydrogel contains dissolved salts called ions. The ions assemble at the surface of the metal, which can induce charge in the metal. Increasing the area of the metal provides more surface to attract charge. This generates electricity, which is captured by a wire attached to the device.
