New single from Cascadian black metal titans Wolves In The Throne Room arrived today. Looking forward to this album a bunch. The deluxe vinyl comes with 12-sided dice with sigul that I kind of want just because they exist.

New Deafheaven. Full album in August.
Not a heavy one. This would fit in on Ordinary Corrupt Human Love pretty well. I wish the shouty bit at the end went on for another 2 minutes. Wouldn't even need to mix it up. Literally just throw another 2 minutes of that same thing over and over in their typical gaze-y style, and I'd love it.

New single and artwork from my favorite local riffmasters Kvasir this morning. Full-length album 4 comes out later this month - I'm going to both album release shows (6/28-29). 30 people max, outdoor seating. I was on the fence about buying the 2nd ticket but when they hadn't sold out yet with a little over 2 weeks to the show I decided it was someone else's loss. outlawsofthesun.blogspot.com/2021/06/kvasir-premiere-new-song-and-reveal-new.html

I loved Sleep Token when I first heard them. I loved their first two EPs. I loved their first album. I loved their singles. And I continue to love them to this day. New one in September.

Spirit Adrift. Fairly straightforward but I like their groove.

Yanari sounds like Conan with Primitive Man's tone and maybe some Ufomammut and In The Company Of Serpents oddities thrown in. Will be too slow for some people. Will likely make my top 10 of 2021.

I liked Sleep Token's last single, "Alkaline", which I shared a couple months ago and which you can find up thread on this very page. I liked it a lot. But I haven't returned to it much. I've heard it in total maybe four times.
This new one, though. Ooof. This new one got its claws in. It's not LOUD or anything (except for the drummer being a complete unit), but Sleep Token are one of those metal-adjacent acts that while rarely metal themselves, they almost exclusively tour with metal bands and get talked about on metal blogs.
This is "The Love You Want."

I somehow didn't put together until now that new Between the Buried and Me and Deafheaven are both dropping tomorrow.
How am I going to pull off this double date?

Aw yeah, new Exodus single with one of my favorite song titles of 2021.
PS. How about that Deafheaven, huh? What I've heard sounds like a blend of Swervedriver and Slowdive. Not awful but very not metal.

Yeah, I'm afraid that Infinite Granite is the album that stalwart Deafheaven fans like me always knew they would make but hoped it would be their seventh record and not their fifth. I do like it, and first single "Great Mass of Color" remains one of my songs of the year. Closing track "Mombasa" also has some that old flavor once it finally gets to it.
Fortunately I also had the new Between the Buried and Me to keep me company this weekend, who at album #11 have just put out some of their heaviest material since their early days.

RIP Eric Wagner (Trouble, The Skull) - covid complications, age 62. He was hospitalized less than a week ago. Unvaccinated (reportedly).
They were supposed to play Psycho Swim in Vegas this past weekend, but obviously had to pull out when Eric tested positive.
Fuck.

Guys, Guys! What in the hell?
I snickered. I appreciated the musicality; the reference music they're using as inspiration; and so on. This might be the the most niche "Off My Lawn!" corruption evah. Serious Dinosaur Jr. Mayhem goin' on here.

Serious Dinosaur Jr. Mayhem goin' on here. I enjoyed that. I was holding out hope that they'd break into a blast for the last 20 seconds as the fuzz ramped up but I'll let them off. In 'things that are the opposite of that' Frontierer have an album coming out on Friday, if this is anything to go by it'll be a right laugh.

Leprous haven't been this fun since 2011's Bilateral (a full five albums ago).
Their latest record, Aphelion, is up tempo, occasionally poppy, and completely lacking in those empty dirges this band has favored since 2013's Coal. I'm so happy to be loving this band again.

Man, I'm lost in the Brats' catalogue. Right now I'm in the transition phase to King Diamond as singer. Blistering shit.
And here's the part (or, a.k.a. today's latest from No Deal YouTube channel) where I'm both in awe and dismay that the aesthetic appearing on most releases of immediacy from the hardcore, punk, underground - whatever you may call it - bands stays the same over 40 years. Geologically speaking, it ain't but a blip of a microsecond. Speaking from my own perspective as a human older than 40: "Damn, that's a long time to keep with the same design principles. I remember the 80s. I liked seeing the graphic design changes and poring over them. Nostalgia now, I guess, but appreciating the effort cos the music still has the same power. Geez, this planet's humans are weird."

Mastodon, I don't need this to be a double album. And I don't mean I don't want it be a long album, or an album with lots of tracks. I mean I don't need the trappings of a double album. I don't want my iPod to see this as two separate albums that I would have to switch between. And now here I am updating song file metadata so iTunes and my iPod see it as one 15-track album. When digital music is king, why are you making me do this?
(I recognize that at a time when streaming music is the actual king, this is a very old fashioned complaint. Might as well go rent a DVD from Blockbuster while I'm at it.)
