I haven't listened to the Mastodon album yet. I've got a gut feeling that I'm not going to like it and I can't shake it so it's going to have to wait until I'm ready to let it in.
In the meantime, Rolo Tomassi are back in the game with a pair of bangers.

Hey metal guys - I got really into Puya recently (Puerto Rican group that's, IDK how to put this, nu-metal salsa prog??) and am wondering if y'all have any recs for bands in that fusion vein, particularly with brass (which seems to be anathema for most metal groups).

Would Brownout count for this?

Tuskar are a riff-heavy two-piece with a drummer vocalist who obviously like the band Conan. They've got an album coming out in a couple of months that I'll probably post about at the time but here's a good video of them recording a song for a live EP in 2019

I know I haven't been keeping up with all things LOUD when I miss that one of the best prog-death acts in the game, Persefone, dropped a new one last week. It goes hard too. A step up from their last record for sure.

The new Zeal & Ardor fucking bumps! I came into it as a super fan - their 2018 full-length Stranger Fruit was my AOTY and remains one of my favorite records of all time - and in situations like that you worry and almost expect to be let down. How could it live up? But it has! This new self-titled album takes them to heavier and (if it's even possible) darker places than before, while remaining unquestionably themselves. If I could liken this journey using another divisive metal band that most of us here seem to know: Zeal & Ardor going from Stranger Fruit to the new Self-Titled is like Deafheaven going from Sunbather to New Bermuda.
As if they wanted to say, "Thank you, we appreciate your concern and passionate comments, but yes, indeed, we are in fact a metal band. Now would you kindly fuck off and then open up this pit."

Undeath are annoyed.
Puppy's debut album was my favourite thing of 2019 so I was slightly concerned about being too hyped for the follow up but I didn't need to worry, Pure Evil is another record filled with metal-adjacent bangers.

Yep, the new songs have all been great so far. Can't wait to slap on the album first thing on Friday morning. Bought myself a ticket to see them in Glasgow at the end of October which will be my first time seeing them since they played an early afternoon main stage slot at Leeds Festival 2003.

Dylan Walker (Full Of Hell) and friends put out this beast of an EP this week. 11 songs in 12 minutes. All brutality, zero filler. collapsedskull.bandcamp.com/

Imperial Triumphant got Kenny G and his son Max Gorelick to do a sax / guitar duet on their latest album and it kinda kicks ass. Yes that's Kenny in the gas mask.

Going to Northwest Terror Fest in Seattle tomorrow and through the weekend. It'll be the biggest event I've been to since 2020. Vax required, masks recommended. (Just a bit nervous.) Line-up highlights include: Ludicra Windhand Obsequiae Mizmor Izthmi Un Cryptic Slaughter Midnight (CS got covid ) Panopticon Witch Vomit Ilsa Suffocation Cloak Full schedule is on their ig as it's changed a few times since their original announcements. http://instagr.am/p/CfURaz1sGLK The best thing about NWTF is the fact that they stagger the set times, and the two venues are in the same building (Neumos is ground floor, Barboza is in the basement), so as long as you're OK going up and down a few flights of stairs between bands you can see at least most of every set. The only drawback is deciding what bands to miss most of while I go get food somewhere. At least that's how it worked pre-covid. Fingers crossed, horns up, etc.

No one else to whinge to but this lot. No Deal, the completely brilliant sifting of all things hardcore punk, metal; dirty punk; punk punk; et cetera, is moving on. Goodbye online portal that isn't like a record store.

I don't listen to "scary voice metal" much when Djshe is home, but on Wednesdays she goes to the VA so I've been listening to Mizmor & Thou all. Day. Long.

Have some live Hippie Death Cult. I didn't go to this show as I got sick (not covid)...but usually I'd be right between the photographer and the gray-haired woman dancing up front.

Djse (and a Sack of Cats), the bald guy in sunglasses, crowd second row, is one of the guitarists from X Suns and a good friend of my wife. Stars aligning and such on a different timeline where I didn't get old and move away, I might have been cool enough to get to this party or at least hear about it anecdotally.

Skin Failure is the new band from former Black Peaks (Monodrone Best Band of the 2010s Award Winners) singer Will Gardner. Their debut album came out last week and while it's not as musically ambitious as Black Peaks were it's still good enough as a sometimes thrashy sometimes sludgy hardcore project:
