Ne Obliviscaris touring the states this fall with Beyond Creation and Persefone. What a lineup!
Got my ticket for October 14!
And since that's not much of a post, here's the new NeO.

This track by Greenbeard started out as bog-standard stoner rock stuff... and then all of a sudden at the halfway point it took a pretty wild turn (I may have let out an audible "holy shit!" at my desk): (trust me, it's worth waiting until the 2:30-ish mark) The whole album is pretty good, worth checking out if that one grabs you at all

Pet post source band takes inspiration from Dav Pilkey to imagine what "Goblin Mode" works like for 80HD.

Surely I've posted about this band before, but I've been strolling through some old favorites I haven't blasted in awhile, and this one has stood out. Native Construct and their 2015 debut (and sure to be only release), Quiet World.
It's like 1950's Pop but as prog-metal. The bit at 3:20 in this one goes so fuckin' hard.

Actively wild there would be a Mutoid Man post right before they dropped a new one. Catchy chorus, even if they rhyme void with void.

It's not completely unrelated in that I picked that up from a post in the Cave In fans facebook group where there'd also been plenty of chat about 'upcoming new Mutoid Man song' in there that day. To be fair it's avoid and void - those are two different words so Brodsky hasn't gone full Kiedis here. Cool riffs, as usual.

The new Sleep Token, Take Me Back to Eden, inches up to masterpiece territory for me. While their past two releases may have one or two higher individual highs, the consistent, cohesive excellence of the new one makes it their best to date. Much recommend.
Favorite tracks right now (it's a moving target):
The new The Ocean, Holocene, I've listened to only once, just now, and admittedly while working on something that required focus, but it washed over me completely. I don't remember a second of it except that at one point there was a lady singing, and that bit sounded pretty cool. It's decidedly un-heavy. The kind of record you knew they'd make eventually but were kind of dreading. The Ocean are one of my favorite bands though, so I'll revisit and give it the chance it deserves. I like the more melodic stuff on their otherwise heavy records, always have, but I don't want a whole album of it.

I kinda fell off with Torche in their later years, but this is still one of my favorite jams. Timeless good vibes.

Anyone tracking Rivers of Nihil on their systems? Pretty fun stuff. Big fan here. From that album I also particularly enjoy "The Silent Life", "A Home", and "Subtle Change." Unfortunately their last record, The Work, left me almost completely cold. Bit of motion in the line-up since then, and the latest single from their unannounced fifth record sounds to have righted the ship:
For what little it is worth, in my opinion the current reigning kings of this brand of modern prog-death are Black Crown Initiate, who across 3 full-lengths and one terrific EP have never stepped wrong. Recommended: " Sun of War", " Trauma Bonds".

I just discovered the band Initiate and they are maybe the most 100% my shit any band has ever been. Boneheaded 90s Victory Records style chugga chugga riffs? Check! Twinkly melodic guitar parts? Check! An angry woman screaming about how fucked up everything is on vocals? Check! Choruses you can sing along to in a car? Check! This shit fuckin' rules!

Protest the Hero w/ Moon Tooth and The Callous Daoboys? And for only $38, fees and all? Looks like I will be getting a concert in this year.

Hard to think of a more squarely 'aimed directly at me' band/song this year than this from The Gorge.

Been blasting this record on repeat for about a month now. Great, great stuff. Reminds me of a heavier, less wanky East of the Wall, which is the perfect prescription for a band. Like an album made up entirely of my favorite moments from The Apologist.

Was at a karaoke party on Saturday, and when I asked if I was going to sing I said that I wasn't sure. Someone asked what kind of music I listen to, which is a question I hate, but alright, 'I mostly listen to metal and prog." The host points me to her husband, "Oh yeah, he's all about that metal too."
Dude says, "So, are you into metal, or like, death metal? I like death metal."
"Oh yeah, death metal is exactly what I like. I actually much prefer death metal over, like, trad metal or thrash or whatever. I like contemporary death metal more than older stuff."
"Like who are you into?"
Again, a question I hate, but okay: "For death metal? So like, Opeth when they were metal would be, like, the archetype for me. For newer stuff I like Rivers of Nihil, Black Crown Initiate, Cattle Decap. Huge Between the Buried and Me fan, but they're more the prog side."
He stared at me like he had no idea who I was talking about. And like, fam, look .... you don't have to like Opeth. I don't care what you like. But you cannot "like death metal" and not know who Opeth are. You have to have heard of them.
That's right, I'm gatekeeping.
(I'm a jerk and never ended up asking who he was into. He's a couple years older than me, so who do you think? Cannibal Corpse? Or were we in completely different ballparks and he was looking for, like, Slayer?)

I can believe that someone slightly older than us could have stopped listening to new bands in the year 1998 and not know Opeth but be really into Entombed, Death, Morbid Angel and such. I think they've missed out on a lot of good stuff but it's not an uncommon thing to happen. I got together with a guitar player I hadn't met before a couple of weeks ago as part of an effort to start up a new band and we had a similar conversation where our metal interests don't quite line up because he stopped paying attention in about 2004 so he's all about the old guard while I didn't start listening to non 'nu' metal until 2003 and generally find stuff from the last 15 years more interesting.

I got a Bandcamp email from a band I love who last put out music in 2011 and I thought was surely dead for good, announcing that they have new music coming out soon. Thrilled, I checked out their Facebook to see what was going on, and the first comment on the announcement was from a band I love who last put out music in 2013 and I thought was surely dead for good, saying, "It's a party!" as if to suggest they too were putting out new music. Checked their Facebook and sure enough they also have new music coming out in 2024.
Exhilarating.
(In order, the two bands are Ever Forthright and Last Chance to Reason, two of the best acts to come out of that post-Periphery early djent scene.)
