It's getting annoying putting up with the fair-weather UD fans. I have to drive by campus most days and the student housing is like a war zone.
Still though, I'll be pulling for them tomorrow against Stanford.

Should be some good sweet sixteen match-ups tonight. Obviously Kentucky-Louisville is the marquee game, but don't sleep on Iowa State-UConn. Feeling good about my Cyclones pulling this one out.

Michigan State - Virginia should be a good game, too, even if the announcers need to periodically clarify that the score refers to a basketball game and not a football game.

Yea, the score will probably not be indicative of how entertaining that game is. The couple times I've watched part of a Virginia game, they're actually pretty fun to watch on defense, they just struggle to score at times.

Tough loss but a great ride under tough circumstances from ISU. UCONN's free throws down the stretch just made their lead insurmountable. And the last remaining Big 12 entry goes down - ouch. This has been a disastrous tournament performance for the conference unfortunately.

Aaaaand my bracket is wiped out plus every team I had even the slightest rooting interest in finished...

Dayton's down one point to Florida in the first half, so that's good.
I picked a different bracket at cbssports and am just barely above a default bracket done by choosing all the highest seeds. But I have Louisville to win in that one.

My poor bracket still made 50th percentile. A sad commentary on the lot of you.

Come on! Not one AVClub/TI person picked Ky. or Ct. to win it all?

I know that many of you are lucky enough to not be writing off your football teams already (although I'd assume Wallet Inspector is probably there with me), but seeing as some schools have already had their media days, I figured I'd resurrect the old college hoopsball thread. How's everyone's teams look this year? Lots of hype in Ames after the sweet sixteen run by the Cyclones. Really hoping Niang and his new P90x body can meet the high expectations.

Here in Kansas it's NEVER too early to be thinking about the start of college hoops (though I've been enjoyably distracted by the strange new sensations of the Royals' sweet playoff run. . . ). It's another stellar recruiting class claimed by the Jayhawks, and while I'm as excited as anybody to see what Alexander, Mykhailiuk and Oubre bring to the team, the real joy of following Kansas in recent years has been watching Bill Self coax overachieving, star-making seasons out of players who were never expected to perform at that level. Beyond that, expectations are always high here, but first and foremost I'm hoping we compete hard in the B12 and keep up our crazy conference title streak. We lost a LOT of talent - not just to the draft but role players like Tharpe and Andrew White transferring - so it'll take some time to work through the adjustments.

1) How confident are you that KU actually has a PG on the roster this year? 2) Are you sold on all the Texas hype? Because I don't think I am, but it's possible that I'm overly biased to thinking that ISU is the real conference dark horse.

How's everyone's teams look this year? Morale is so bad in the OSU camp that Travis Ford apparently just signed some stud PG, and our own fanbase is wondering aloud why the kid would throw away his college career like that. Last year Ford won eight Big 12 games with three NBA roster-caliber players on team. He has won a single NCAA tournament game in six years. He will be making $2.8 million per season for the next four years. Last year everyone got their hopes up due strictly to the talent level, and now nobody is going to care too much about the team until there's a new coach in town.

How mad is Travis Ford that Rick Barnes picked last season to become a competent coach again? He made it too easy to become the new conference punching bag for coach that does less with more.

So....am I crazy biased for thinking ISU getting picked 5th in the Big 12 preseason poll is ridiculous? I didn't expect us to get picked over KU and Texas, but with us sitting in the Top 15 in most of the preseason publications, I figured we'd sit firmly in that #3 spot.

I don't see how the Cyclones are a #5 pick in-conference. Iowa State's outperformed the preseason conference rankings the last three years now - I think you can pencil them in to do so again this year.

I'm a little concerned about the non-conference season, the schedule isn't too tough but we'll be dealing with some suspensions and eligibility issues. Should be at full strength by Big 12 season though.

Anybody have thoughts on the UNC thing? It would be interesting to see if the NCAA had the balls to drop the hammer on a blue blood, but considering all the backpedaling they've done on Penn State, I can't see them having the stomach for it.

So many pivotal things going on in NC now. It's one of those states, like Texas, that is ultra supportive of public education yet has a new type of rightist running things in Raleigh. The old guard in the state establishment would have welcomed penalties and hunkered down for a few years to fix things, right? Is that what happened in 2010? I'm talking out my hat. Maybe I'm thinking of Dean Smith coming in to clean up the 1961 basketball scandal.

Feeling excited! Don't know about good necessarily - it's way too early in the season to have much of a sense what's under the hood, and I can't say we looked particularly impressive against UCSB. More than anything I'm just excited to watch an early season marquee match-up; in a lot of ways it reminds me of last year's early season game against Duke that we pulled off to my pleasant surprise. I will say I was particularly delighted to see Mizzou go down to lowly UMKC last week. . .

They put up a good fight against K-State last night too. I'm not worried about them coming up here in December, but I think that might actually end up being a semi-interesting game. Of course that's what I thought about Georgia State before last night.
I'm just glad to have relevant games to pay attention to again.

Is it possible that UMKC is actually kind of good this year? New trend: art schools winning at b-ball. See also: VCU.

I will say I was particularly delighted to see Mizzou go down to lowly UMKC last week. . . I didn't bother to check the score until the next morning, since I figured there was no way in hell we'd lose to them. When I did see the score, I honestly thought for a minute that ESPN.com was playing some kind of horrible practical joke. At least we've bounced back and won the next two. I will say I was particularly delighted to see Kansas get blown out of the building by Kentucky. SEC! SEC! SEC!

So much great college ball on tonight - KSU-Arizona is shaping up to be a good one, Iowa State-Maryland will be illuminating, and 'Nova-Michigan should be a perfect capper. I'm always in a NCAAB mindset, but today is the first day of the season that really FEELS like we're finally in full college basketball mode.

Watching my clones take on Arkansas and I can't decide if Mushberger's announcing is annoying or weirdly charming.
