I really, really, really like Tom Petty. I don't think this quite fits into 'heresy' though, more of a 'thing that would get me made fun of.' *receives tons of 'would you ask Tom Petty that?' jokes, cries* now is a good time for me to do absolutely no research and ask the provenance/meaning of the WYATPT meme, right? I gather there was an interview with Billy Bob Thornton about his music. Perhaps detecting an insult implicit in one of the questions, he bristled and said ... well, you know. So the meme isn't directed at Tom Petty, so much as famous people using their fame to cross over into fields without earning their spurs.

I thought Childish Gambino's Because the Internet was a great album.
I honestly really recommend it for anyone who wants some offbeat, catchy, psychedelic hip-hop. The script and storyline is entirely unnecessary and you don't need it to enjoy the music. The paranoid misogyny of Camp is entirely gone, his flow is drastically improved, the production a great deal more experimental and less polished. (The corny one-liners are still there, sorry. But they're likably silly and less forced.) The second half of the album is genuinely strange, dipping into a weird hybrid of industrial music and R&B that makes me very excited for his future work.
I'm sure I've mentioned my appreciation of it on the TI before, but for some reason I was reminded of it tonight and given the 'eh' review AVC gave it (and the general "GO BACK TO ACTING" sentiment toward Donald Glover in the commentariat) I thought I'd post it here.

I liked the movie of The Road, but I like post-unspecified-apocalypse stuff and also I didn't have to deal with Cormac McCarthy's terrible, terrible prose. I got maybe 50 pages into Blood Meridian and was just. so. bored. Theorectically, his stories should be right up my alley, but I just can't deal with his writing style.

Not read him; but I'll stand by my opinion that No Country For Old Men is the most over-rated film of the 21st Century. Based on that flick, I probably never will read him.

I don't think anyone thinks it's revolutionary or anything. I'm pretty sure it's just relief that there is still a successful middle-ground between "niche comedy that can only survive on Netflix, HBO, etc." and "latest offering from Chuck Lorre Broad Laffs Factory".
That and the presence of national treasures Andre Braugher and Terry Crewes.
What's unusual about B99 is that there are two black men in positions of authority (one of whom is gay and it's treated as perfectly normal and not a joke), two Latina women who aren't there to be ~sexy and fiery~, a white manchild who doesn't actually get away with it as his life is pretty much a trainwreck, a white dude of a type that's usually painted as insultingly emasculated, and...Gina, who would likely be portrayed as an airhead or just flat-out mean/slutty on another show. Most of that is pretty mind-blowing. It's almost as if the creators wanted to do their own thing rather than copy every other TV show for the last seventy years. I like that fact too, but it doesn't affect my enjoyment except that it leads to a lot of jokes that I haven't heard/seen before.

Also, no major film critics are declaring any superhero flick of recent years as a creative masterpiece in the way they do with No Cunt...

Watched the first episode of Bob's Burgers last night. Why do people like it? I spent most of the episode being really annoyed that all (okay, most of) the women are voiced by men. Why would they do that? Just to give off the appearance of pointless sexism?

If you want to know why people watch Bob's Burgers, watch the episode with Jon Hamm as a talking toilet.

It barely even has continuity, much less serialization (as the AVC's review of last week's episode discussed) so you can pretty much just jump in wherever and see if it suits your fancy, then watch other episodes as you see fit. Possible entry points: Season 2 episode 3, "Synchronized Swimming" Season 3 episode 11, "Nude Beach" Season 3 episode 15, "O.T.: The Talking Toilet" Season 4 episode 5 "Turkey In A Can" (this is a personal favorite)

It was okay, but nothing amazing. After people kept talking about by the 3rd season, I went back, and the first episode of Season 2 got me hooked. I've loved it since. So, in answer to your question, 14 episodes. Seriously, just give that one a watch out of context from the rest.

I'm glad he's healthy now, but Tracy Morgan isn't funny. His presence is probably what kept me from watching 30 Rock, which is really too bad. The movie he made with Bruce Willis looked awful. His funniest bit on SNL was when he cross-dressed as Clinton's secretary and danced wordlessly to "Chain of Fools" in the first cold open after the impeachment. (When your best role contains no lines, it's not a good sign.) I saw his stand-up in college, where he was less funny than his opener Aries Spears.
The fact that he is more successful than Tim Meadows is a crime, but then again at least he didn't make the movie version of The Ladies Man.

I used to think that I liked Star Wars. I liked the movies well enough, they are fun, dumb, movies. Now I realize, after months and months of speculation about a movie, than I earnestly do not give a fuck about Star Wars.
It's just fun trash people, stop ascribing higher meaning to a merchandise empire! Holy sweet Jesus fuck, Star Wars is not art. I'm just so sick of being over saturated with Star Wars shit, and the movie (and it is just a fucking movie people) still does not come out for another two months. Sweet fuck.

I think the sort of ease that makes the original trilogy “dumb fun” is underappreciated, actually—that illusion of ease is one of the hardest things for a movie to do. The economy of storytelling, skill in terms of editing and lighting (thanks, New Hollywood!), the close fit of the way everything unfolds plays to everyone’s strengths acting (while avoiding their weaknesses), and creativity in terms of things like set design, puppetry and model work are really impressive—it’s the fact that we can take it for granted that elevates the films to art.

Also, no major film critics are declaring any superhero flick of recent years as a creative masterpiece in the way they do with No Cunt... There was The Dark Knight; that's widely held up as one of the best films of the last ten years. Also, honestly, NCFOM is simply a better film, with better acting, directing, and cinematography than most superhero films, and the source material is a novel by Cormac McCarthy, who is a much better writer than the vast majority of comics writers, and certainly much better than the vast majority of superhero comics writers. But also, of course NCFOM is more acclaimed than most superhero films; that's true of pretty much any film that aspires to be capital A Art rather than a blockbuster and is deemed to be very good by most critics.

At least for me “I would rather watch again…” does not necessarily correlate with “this is a better film.”
