Shane Black is nowhere near as funny and clever and witty as many many people seem to think he is.

Hmm... Uhhh... AV Club Heresies...
- I have no opinion of "Girls." It is neither something I enjoy, nor is it the target of my hatred.
- I appreciate their music reviews, and I wish they would do more of them sincerely.
- Knowing that the majority of GJ,I posts are user-submitted, I kind of like them. I just hate that there's so many of them that are mash-ups, or lego-related nonsense.
- I miss Todd. I recently stopped following him on Twitter, mostly because there was so much stuff he was commenting on that I just flat out did not care about, and I could not suffer another round of Upfront or the TV Critics preview convention or whatever the hell it is out of context, mostly because I stopped watching a wide array of television, and now only follow the shows I know I like. Having said all this, I loved, loved, loved his Mad Men reviews, and even though I think John Teti did just as admirable a job in wrapping up the show, I miss Todd's writing style that made it seem like he appreciated the show on a completely different level, as if, like Scientology, you had to pay your way to understanding that level of comprehension.
- I like Serial Serial. Not as much as I like Mom on Pop, but I like it.

Oh God, somehow GJ,I looked at Gawker's habit of posting Screenrant videos and thought the thing to be learned from that was that they should start posting Goddamn Cinemasins videos. Kill me now.

Doing my series of 2007 movie reviews, I have been thoroughly underwhelmed by such sacred cows as Waitress, Once, and Persepolis.

Once is a musical that got a lot of hype because the music was real/improvised, but I never saw it because musicals are the worst type of movie. It's a movie with people playing music in it more than it's really a musical. It's really a light little relationship drama about musicians. I liked it ok, but it didn't really make much of an impact on me like it did on a lot of people.

BoJack Horseman is not good or funny.
I tried. I gave it the first three episodes. It's got a helluva roster for voices, but that didn't make the scripts good. I was thinking, "Did Aaron Paul agree to be EP if he could be the voice of reason for a change?" Then in the third episode, he comes right out and says, "I'm the voice of reason." I don't know if the other episodes use plots as tired as the first three, but I didn't see enough promise to make me find out.
There were no original themes in execution, except for the diversity of animal/human hybrids that make up half the population. (They can essentially have superpowers, too, like the bird-reporters who can fly.) Really, even that aspect was already done by "Ugly Americans".
The most notable positive features are the well-done opening sequence and the song written by Grouplove for the credits.

To be fair, Bojack is pretty shitty until episode six or seven. The surge in quality after that point is remarkable.

I a fair amount of stuff from BoJack (who could dislike the three-kids-in-a-trench), but I feel like BoJack’s trotting on pretty well-trod ground. It never really gets to the point where it adds up to more than the sum of its parts for me.

I made a comment about Don Maclean not having any songs aside from American Pie a month or so ago and it never stops attracting comments of "Vincent!" from the apparently numerous Maclean-o-philes who can' t see the 30 other people who've also said "Vincent!" in the same thread.

The fact that all 30 named exactly the same song pretty much proves your point.

This one has gotten several friends mad at me: Neutral Milk Hotel are bad and incredibly dull. There are very few bands in my lifetime that get the pass for doing one great album entryway into greatness. Neutral Milk Hotel is not one of them. Then again, the bands who have most obviously taken influence from Neutral Milk Hotel are also shit in my eyes, but it's hard to say this without harsh judgment.

I don't understand the "watch me play a video game" videos. I just don't understand the appeal at all, I don't understand why people watch them, I don't understand what possible enjoyment comes from watching someone else play a video game.
I'm angry if I go to a friend's house and I have to watch them play a single player video game, why would someone willingly do that?
Also Pinterest, I don't understand the concept behind Pinterest at all.
I don't know if these are AVC heresies, but I wanted to talk about them.
(that said, Monster Factory is a very funny series, but I don't get play-throughs at all)

I'm angry if I go to a friend's house and I have to watch them play a single player video game, why would someone willingly do that? The degree to which this practice has blown up really surprises me - many people make a living doing just this now, which, I mean, crazy - but I do occasionally watch Let's Plays in specific circumstances. The most common would be: 1) I want to experience a game that realistically I'll never play myself, either because I don't own the means to do so or for whatever reason I don't actually want to. 2) The sheer awe of seeing a game played at a super high level (more typical of speed runs than standard LP's) 3) The content creator is an engaging host who shares a lot of historical information and secrets about the game during the play, so it's kind of like Pop-Up Videos for a video game. Most common with LP's of old games, which may also benefit from: 4) Nostalgia. Yes, I do want to see a run through the SNES version of Jurassic Park, which I did play back in the day, but I don't have the capability of playing it any more. I surprise myself saying this, but I do find that sometimes watching someone play through a game is as satisfying as playing it myself, all the more so if that game would prove too difficult or slow going for me, and by utilizing LPs I can consume the content more quickly. I'm not really in to live Twitch streaming though, so if you're specifically railing against that, then I get it. I'm not interested in the PewDiePies of the world. My interest starts with wanting to see the game, and then finding the creator who delivers the content to me in the way most to my taste.

I'm terribly embarrassed by how far behind I am when it comes to new music. That said, I have to admit I'm just not that into Radiohead. I'm sure it's not them, it's me.
And I have never watched Girls because I really don't think I'll like it. Even crueler, I don't like looking at the main chick. Her whole being confuses me.
Oh and Firefly was just ok.

I saw NMH three times in concert, I'm a huge fan of Of Montreal, Architecture in Helsinki, Elf Power, etc. Sue me, I like hipster shit. I don't hate it for being "hipster shit" -- whatever that may be. I don't like Neutral Milk Hotel because I think it's music that requires a very particular literary mind -- where the meaning behind the songs is something to figure out before enjoying the music behind it. If there IS anything hipster about that, is that it feels like the songwriters for groups like these feel like they're making music exclusively for themselves, and the people who have read the same kinds of books they've read and liked the same records they listen to. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that, but there's a character to a lot of this music that, to me, tells me I haven't read those books or heard those records yet, and I don't get it until I do. As such, the music comes off to me as overwrought, that the songwriter(s)/composer(s) want you to notice how much care and craft went into every note. EDIT TO ADD: May as well tell you here that a buddy of mine and I once saw Jeff Mangum during a private Olivia Tremor Control show covering the Northside Festival in Brooklyn a few years back. My friend tried his damndest to get a pic of Mangum to be sneaky, until he just outright did it. Mangum gave him such a stink-eye, I felt like I was being cursed just as well. I told my friend that he knew what he was doing wasn't cool, and asked why would he do such a thing. "Pops," he said, "When you see a unicorn out in public, you damn well better take a picture of a fucking unicorn."

I like NMH alright, and respect them, though they're probably my least-favorite band from the Elephant 6 collective, so I've never understood the "E6 is great I LOVE NMH and oh yeah I guess there are other bands" thing that so many people have.

(that said, Monster Factory is a very funny series, but I don't get play-throughs at all) OK, you said you wanted to talk about it, so here's my two cents: 'Watch me play' is fun for people like me, who suffer from performance anxiety and are so terrible at video games that they never make it to the interesting part of the game. Growing up, I used to watch my older brother and his friends play all the classic Nintendo and Sega games and I used to marvel at how these geeky, confidence-lacking boys could be such virtuosos at gaming. I still find it kind of hot. As for Pinterest, I didn't get the point of it when it first launched either, but then I got a house and started Boards with ideas to decorate each room. Then I realized you could also make Boards to plan vacations, create exercise routines, plan meals, get wardrobe ideas, and learn about specific topics like diy or social media marketing. It's basically like an easier, more visually accessible way of making and arranging bookmarks.
