Fuck it I'm trying Elden Ring. I've died three times in the first hour and a half--once to a bunch of skeleton dudes along the shore, once falling off a cliff trying to retrieve my runes, and once to those solider guys hanging around the Gatefront Ruins, but at least I got some cool spirit wolves now. I highly doubt I will ever git gud, but it's pretty fun so far. I eventually found something I liked better, but those spirit wolves carried me a long, long way.

In 2004, my now wife worked as a server at a Tex-Mex restaurant near our college in Denton Texas, and one of her coworkers, without irony, truly believed that the N-Gage was the second coming of Christ.

I am a coward and bad at games, and therefore my strategy is to cheese Elden Ring as much as humanly possible. Thanks to guides I've got my meteorite staff and I've got my rock sling spell. Now it's time to spend a few (dozen) hours rune farming, bay-bee.

The game is so horrendously balanced and monotonous to complete the ordinary Soulsborne way that the majority of newer players who bought into the hype will just give in and do exactly what you're doing.

Games* I've preordered well in advance in a supreme act of self-care: AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative (fantastic sequel name guarenteed not to have any negative impact on sales) Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition Chaos;Head NOAH/Chaos;Child Combo Pack
Incredible year for releases with gobbledygook names

Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition Does it include the Radical Dreamers game? I think it was a visual novel. I played the fan translation but it would be news to have an official translation.

Kotaku wasn't very impressed with the total package, but CC is a divisive game. Plenty of defenders (of the original) in the comments:

I either played that or watched a youtube video a long time ago. I guess it was amusing for a few minutes but not that good or memorable. FWIW I am currently on book 4 in my umpteenth re-read and it is just as hard to put down as it was 25 years ago.

Sadly the complaints seem par for the course for a sqenix port. Graphic issues/slowdowns and a general lack of care and attention. I'll probably hold off til they fix the worst of it as they generally seem to do. (Or I guess see if the technical issues are less glaring for someone who reviews it on PC)

Square Enix has reportedly trademarked "Tactics Ogre: Reborn" in Japan. Squenix being Squenix there's a significant chance it'll end up being some mobile gacha game garbage, and I doubt they'll bother bringing back Yasumi Matsuno, but...there's hope?

I really want to play Tunic and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, but I know that if I start either and end up getting really into it, my Elden Ring run will fall to the wayside. By the time I return, I'll feel like I have to start over, effectively throwing another 47 hours intro trash bin.
No, I want to play Elden Ring. I do.
Made the mistake of watching some Tiny Tina character build videos yesterday, and now the itch to just drop Elden Ring and start playing TTW is so strong. Argh.

Finished up Final Fantasy IX with the kids last night. Still as great as ever. What really strikes me about IX, especially playing in quick succession after VII and VIII, is how much better the character work is. While some are more involved than others, every character except Quina has their own arc that plays out over the runtime of the game. They have motivations beyond "keep hanging out with the main character, because what else am I going to do?"
Going to take an extended break now. My daughter is loving watching the games, but my 4 year-old doesn't have the attention span for it, and these long JRPGs at least are becoming too much of a time investment.

Welp, I bought Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and ended up playing that on Saturday when normally I'd play Elden Ring. So ... crap.

Bit of a unicorn Friday coming up tomorrow. Friday is my only reliable day of the week to game. I usually make and serve dinner, then Mrs. Bro does a movie night with the kids while I head to my PC for 3-4 hours (with a break in the middle to put the boy to bed). Tomorrow's a little different though, because my daughter is going to a play and eventual sleepover at a grandparent's, and the Mrs. is taking the boy out to dinner for a little "mama-son" one on one time. So, instead of waiting until after dinner, as soon as I get off work in the afternoon, I'm free. I can game 7+ hours, undisturbed, if I so choose. But what to do with it?
With 7+ hours, I could make decent progress in Elden Ring, or I could make excellent progress in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. BUT, that's also long enough to play either Sekiro or Hollow Knight to completion. And Sekiro in particular I've been longing to play again.
Hmmmm ... decisions, decisions .... my life is so hard you guys.

Ended up playing Sekiro to a point I was happy with - I find the back third of the game to be a bit of a trudge - then dove back into Elden Ring. Productive night.

As someone who gives no shits about Elden Ring and probably won't play it til it hits $20 if at all the gaming site news cycle of at least 3 Elden Ring posts per day for 2 months now has been really insufferable

I don't think I've ever seen Sekiro drop below 30 on digital tbh.

Yeah and I'm waiting on that for Sekiro too so haven't played that yet either.

Beat Margit and Godrick and put enough hours into Elden Ring to feel I justified the purchase, but...eh, not for me. I never really got to the point where the satisfaction of beating a tough enemy outweighed the general sense of tedium and anxiety that went into the process. Glad I gave a Soulsborne a chance, though. Otherwise I've been puttering around in Gran Turismo, racing enough to complete the daily marathon and cash in roulette tickets. I could finish up Triangle Strategy--I'm about 3/4ths of the way though--but man, I wish it had an auto-battle setting for grinding, a la FFT. Playing through 2-3 half-hour "mental mock battles" just so I can level up my party enough to take on the hour-long story battle is...a considerable active time investment. So instead of doing that I've started up FFIX again.

Five years after the system was released, I finally bought a Switch. Got the OLED model. Never having played an original Switch, I don't know for sure how they compare, but the image on the device in handheld mode is crisp and looks really good. Also, I guess it's possible that at the Gamestop where I bought it, they intentionally set up a particularly dim looking original Switch next to an OLED Switch in the display they had set up, but the image quality of the OLED was clearly brighter and sharper between those two display systems. Wasn't expecting to play it much undocked, but I actually have played it in handheld mode a decent amount already. It's easily the biggest screen I've ever seen on a handheld system as well (and bigger than the original Switch screen), while still being pretty light. I was a little surprised at how flimsy the docking station feels, and I suspect that Nintendo designed it this way in order to shorten the lifespan of the system. My old Gamecube still works perfectly fine nearly 20 years later; even though it won't be getting used nearly as much as that Gamecube got used, I'll be kind of surprised if the docking/charging port on my Switch hasn't physically given up the ghost within a decade due to the way it wobbles back and forth in the docking station every time you press the power button or slip the joycons on and off. Which sucks, but hey, I guess it's a savvy business decision on Nintendo's part. Why give people the option to possibly still play their favorite Switch games on their old Switch in 2035 when they could be paying for a port to the Switch 3 or whatever?
The controllers are fine, I suppose. I'm still getting used to them, but I do feel that the lack of analog shoulder buttons is kind of a wild choice for current generation console controller. The + and - buttons effectively serving as two different pause menus in a different location than any comparable buttons have ever been located on any controller I've previously used is also weird to get used to. I haven't tried playing with joycons on their own, but I have played quite a bit with the joycons slotted into the little skeleton of a controller that came with the system, and that honestly compares favorably with the non-pro wired controller that I also bought.
As far as games I've been playing, I've mostly been playing Breath of the Wild, which is indeed an amazing game. The spoken dialogue is totally unecessary, but thankfully there isn't a lot of that to sit through. I'm having a ton of fun with it, and I've still got a long ways to go. I'll probably end up playing it on and off over the course of the next year or so, since there isn't much of a plot to keep track of and I probably would get burned out on playing the entire game without ever taking a break for something else, given how long I've spent getting just to where I am right now (I've just returned from recovering my first lost memory, a trip which somehow took me three hours of hunting around a mountain range to locate). As I'm pretty sure others on this thread have noted in the past, weapons do break really quickly, but I'm fine with that, and appreciate the fact that this more or less forces players to get strategic and creative with how they fight enemies. But we'll see how I feel about the weapon system once I've actually beaten a substantive portion of the game.
Also bought an indie puzzle game called Baba Is You, in which you play as a cool sheep who pushes word blocks around on the screen in order to change the rules of the game in such a way as to enable you to satisfy the win condition for each level. It's neat. At the moment, most puzzles are fairly challenging but solvable for me; I do get the sense that I will probably personally hit a wall in terms of difficulty at some point though, at which point I will struggle to progress any further.
I also bought Disco Elysium, which I've only played for about an hour thus far. Since it clearly isn't going to be a lot of fun if I only pick it up intermittently and start forgetting important details germane to solving the case, I'm putting it aside for now until I want a break from BotW. Pretty funny, thus far.
