The only game of 2013 that I've played was Bioshock Infinite, but thankfully I loved that game, so I've had a good track record for games this year. I really haven't been active as a gamer at all this year, besides The Walking Dead Season 1 and Infinite early in the year, and casual replaying of Hitman: Blood Money recently. I will of course be playing The Walking Dead Season 2, though, when it starts later this month.

I just spent the past couple of hours in Age of Empires II's scenario editor. I made up one of my favourite custom maps, a conversion map (everyone else starts with a town and villagers but you start with one priest, it was inspired by a campaign map for the original AoE) and then played that for ages. Good times.

I played EU IV for maybe the entire day yesterday (went through almost a century, 1614-1702). Admittedly, I was sick, but it still felt a little much. My maiden run, as Portugal, and it's been incredibly engrossing thus far, if a little frustrating that Castile gets to places like S. Africa and Australia before I do. And what's with the lack of spices in The Spice Islands (TM)? It looks like Halmahera's the only province that actually produces them. Still, a great time; may kill off my creative life for a while, but it'll save me money, I reckon.

I bought a ton of older games for the PS3 awhile back, just trying to fit them all in.
Currently playing Oblivion, before I get around to Skyrim, and dear lord is this game fucking enormous. I do appreciate that the game wants you to be able to get your money out of it but at some point it just sprawls out way too far and becomes nearly tedious. Every time you finish a quest, and therefore think you are making progress, they just give you another one. I'm determined to finish all of the quests but FUCK YOU, GAME- END ALREADY!

I've been playing Bit.Trip Runner 2 which is really fun but only in short doses. If I try to play the game for more than 30 minutes, it gets boring. This might have to do with the fact that all the obstacles are the same, just placed differently in each level.
I swear one of these days I'll finish GTA V. I just checked and it says I have 8 missions left. The problem is I still need to collect the spaceship parts, scrap letters and Freak side-missions before I decide to do the final heist.

I think I got less than 10 hours into Skyrim before becoming overwhelmed and moving on to something else. It's really a gorgeous game and plenty fun, but the longest game I'll ever play is like 40 hours, so I cannot imagine playing 100+ hours of that game to beat it, so I just moved on to more manageable things. (I'm kinda having that same discussion with GTA V right now to decide if I think I'll ever play it enough to finish it.)

Same, Skyrim never ever stopped impressing me or throwing new stuff at me to do and see, but I just don't have the long-term attention span to even try to get through a game that big.

I definitely need a little more focus and linearity in games. Not, like, Call of Duty game-on-rails focus, but to at least feel like there's a main story I'm progressing through. I was a little relieved when I saw I'm halfway through the GTA V main missions, so at least there's hope I'll beat the game, not caring too much about the side stuff.

Try playing Morrowind for the Xbox sometime if you'd really like to drain your life and sanity away. I took advantage of the Steam sale to get myself Far Cry 3 and Civ 5. FC3 has been fun so far, but can anyone tell me if it's as hopelessly repetitive as FC2?

The addition of a real fast-travel system, and the removal of endlessly respawning checkpoints and scout cars makes a huge difference in cutting down the third game's overall monotony level. Though, inevitably a certain sense of repetition does start to set in as you get in the latter stages of the fairly lengthy main story.

I sunk 400 hours into Oblivion by the end, though I was unemployed at the time. It was basically the job I didn't have. In fact I played so long I activated what was termed the A-Bomb bug, which happens if you play the game too long and majorly messes up the animations. Basically everything becomes extra slow and the characters look like their skin is melting off.

So is Skyrim roughly the same amount of timesuck that Oblivion is? If so, it is going on the back burner once I'm done with Oblivion, in favor of a bunch of other shorter games that I need to finish.

Depends how much of a completionist you are. I've sunk about 300 hours in to it doing every sidequest I come across (except the radiant ones), and I'm in the Dragonborne DLC right now.

I like Skyrim for that reason (also because it's fun to play and I get a cool war axe and armor and stuff). I don't play video games very often, but I can always come back to Skyrim and do something else in it for a while, because it never ends. I've gone through the main storyline of all the expansions, and a few of the extra things, but there's always another city quest or whatever to do if I've got a free afternoon with shitty weather. I like that.

This is why I'm afraid to play Skyrim and had trouble with Oblivion: I am WAY too much of a completionist and always have been. Hell I installed mods back when I was playing Baldur's Gate II constantly just so I could complete every stronghold quest.

So, I just finished Wind Waker, and the appallingly bad mechanics on the final boss nearly put me off the entire experience. Seriously, after never needing to use parry the entire game, the final boss revolves around it entirely. I had forgotten of its existence entirely. I can't say I'll bother trying another Zelda after this.

The best Okami is the HD remake, isn't it? Entirely because you can skip the goddamn opening cutscene.

I think I'm finally on the verge of getting my Paradox habits (specifically Europa Universalis IV) under control. This comes after a very interesting eighteenth century for Judkinsean Portugal.
After the apex of the early modern monarchy, when Jose II abolished slavery in 1700 and Rafael Magalhaes completed his sweeping explorations of the Western Pacific, the wastrel Manuel I failed to appoint a prime minister and found himself ousted by an aristocratic revolution that installed (in their words) a "noble republic" in 1708. This gimcrack "government" surprisingly lasted for over seventy years, until Prince Manuel de Faria acceded to the middle class demands for a constitution in 1782. In the interim, the Portuguese empire neared its territorial extent--among other things, almost completely dominating the North Pacific, with power bases in California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Kamchatka--but with increasing problems, notably colonial rebellions in its South American possessions, particularly La Plata and Chile. This all occurred with largely minimal conflict from other European powers, Spain's friendship helping to insulate Portugal from the truly batshit carnival of continental European politics (to say nothing of Cromwell's successful revolution in the British Isles, which first ushered in a "commonwealth" and then a constitutional republic). The latter's emulation by Portugal failed to prevent a British attack in 1783, to which Portugal succumbed without a shot fired, merely suffering the independence of Chile, La Plata, Colombia, Quebec, and parts of Brazil (apparently the shaming of Spain and France were part of the deal). Sensitive to taunts, apparently, President Vicente da Azevedo decided to flex the nation's might by attacking all that was left of the mighty Spice Islands empire of Majapahit in 1794. The "war" (if it could really be called that) was successful, but immediately on its completion, the reduction of Majapahit to a Portuguese protectorate ensnared the empire in a new war with the stronger Brunei (controlling most of Borneo, except for the Russian-!- southeast).
That's where it stands now, and I'm a little wary of seeing it through. I'm also conscious that I've spent way too much time on this admittedly super-fun activity. That said, it's been a blast, and I expect I'll be getting Victoria 2 before long (Hearts of Iron sounds a little too military-heavy for me, but I may change my mind after seeing a few playthroughs, because East Vs. West sounds like a great time, too).

I always suspected it but thanks to all the PSN friending now I know for sure: the AV Club is full of losers, because we're all at home playing video games on a Saturday night. God, we all suck.
Also, I know there are people on here not on my friend list, I've just been too lazy to send out an FR. I'll get to that sometime soon. Ish.

I've become a Steam convert recently (name: dloburns display:TheLastDaysOfDiscoDonnie) but I still love Nintendo even if I am a full generation behind. Forewarning, I mostly play TF2 even though I'm rather scrub at it.
I also have a PS2 and a few games I inherited that I haven't been interested in opening.

So I finished watching a Let's Play of Beyond: Two Souls (http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSw1tcher) and oh my god the ending has made me so angry. It's quite possibly one of the worst endings I've ever seen. I'm never gonna finish it--what happens? Good God, where to begin? So the prologue of the whole game teases this big post-apocalyptic cityscape. Turns out it's actually a teaser for a fucking sequel. You don't see that again until the epilogue, where it shows a character and possibly yourself preparing for some big epic fight and bam credits.
That character you see in that destroyed cityscape? Some baby you helped give birth to during your time being homeless that never really had anything to further the plot, nor really explained the significance of the baby, nor did you ever follow up on these people after the sequence.
Anyhow, so the climax of the story is Jodie trying to destroy this machine that opens up a portal between the world of the living and the world of the spirits. Nathan went crazy because of his dead wife and kid and tried to bring them back or at least have a way to talk to them forever, but it didn't go well and he nearly destroyed their spirits doing so earlier. Then he goes crazier and tries to permanently merge the world of the living and the world of the dead so everyone can live with spirits forever. So he's down around where Jodie is trying to stop the machine, and he's looking for his wife and daughter and is sad he can't find them, Jodie and him have a talk/yell at each other, and then he decides he made a mistake and shoots himself in the head.
We see his spirit leave his body and then his spirit returns and we see him immediately rejoin his wife and daughter and they're totally happy about it, like "Oh I'm so glad to see you, I love you" and shit. WHAT THE FUCK. Then he goes to Jodie and tells her "You have to finish this"
Oh thanks. You kill yourself and get to be with your great family who loves you and you get to shirk any responsibility onto Jodie. No consequences, no moral grayness, just go kill yourself, you'll be better off.
So Jodie goes further towards the machine and starts to see hallucinations for some reason, going back into her past, all the way to her birth where we find out the truth behind Aiden (it's her dead fetus twin). And he disappears because reasons. Then you shut down the machine but end up in the boundary between the two worlds and get to decide where you want to end up, with the living or spirits. In the living world you see the dude that is pushed hard on you as a romantic interest, even if you deny him every time. In the spirit world, you see people that died during your journey, some of whom you intentionally killed and some you let die. Some of these people are from a fairly racist sequence involving American Indians which had very little impact of the plot (much like the homeless sequence). And they're totally happy. And the spirit world is made out to be awesome, you get to hang out with your dead best friends for eternity, etc.
Choosing the spirit world gives you an ending where you just watch the living and leave messages for them and talk about how awesome being dead is.
So that's the moral of the story: Being dead is awesome. Just go kill yourself, no consequences. Also all homeless people and American Indians are magical.

Well since we're giving out names and such PSN: kamilumin Steam: kamilumin (though the display name is probably still "Ann Veal") I'll add 3DS and WiiU later (does anyone even have a WiiU? Super Mario 3D World is fantastic by the way) Dang it, why are you sending out blank Friend Requests? I had no idea who you were and you didn't reply when I asked. If I hadn't been looking through this thread again I would have just deleted your message eventually. Anyway, I'll approve the thingy when I get back tonight. Also, I was looking through this thread for everyone's PSN handles so I'll be sending out those FRs later as well.
