I think that right there sums it up.

I have to kind of disagree with this—I scrolled loaded all comments through moimoi ’s responder. I saw a lot of deleted posts, maybe from disqus drop-ins. But the remaining annoying posts—the sapiosexuals, the concern trolls, the “well, if we take this article with a tone-deaf literalness…”, the technically-correct-is-the-best-kind-of-corrects, were all people who I’d probably describe as semi-regulars—you might know their name from an errant upvote, their odd drop in every so often, their posts on a specific topic you don’t really follow but will occasionally click on. moimoi ’s responder even had an AVC-native account. I don’t think we can really blame this entirely, or even mostly, on disqus. I've noticed an uptick of "long term" readers and users who were bemoaning "the leftist shift" of the writing. Investigation showed me that many of them were at least semi regular commenters of both AVC and Dissolve. Unsettling. To be fair, I think there is something to be said for the frustration of being preached to on a site that used to be largely (though not entirely) apolitical. I don't know if I'd call that unsettling. Even if it's for a noble cause, nobody likes to feel like they're being lectured, especially when the shift toward political writing and social commentary has been accompanied by and combined with increasingly lazy and desperate clickbait. For me, anyway, it's not just that they've become political, it's that they've become political badly, and in a way that (the occasional quality feature like yesterday's aside) is clearly intended to pander to the lowest common denominator. Well, second-lowest. They're not aiming for Trump supporters, after all. I love that Mohd managed to monopolize the first 100 comments on that with a discussion about some Youtuber not reviewing Ghostbusters. Jesus, what the fucking shit was he thinking with that? Tone-deaf even for him.

Meth Lab Shenanigans You know who actually lectured the commenters? Keith Phipps back in 2012, which we all look back on as the good old days. There hasn’t been any such reminder recently at the AVC, and one would be kind of pointless since there isn’t really as much of shared community at the AVC to lecture. Look in the comments and you see a lot of mockery of Phipps’s point—and people made joking comments about celebrity smells for weeks afterwards (because, although Phipps included that as a precaution, that was one bit of BS not thrown at Lena Dunham, and smell is an inherently funny sense). But that was possible. And it’s striking how much wasn’t deleted, since the few weeks after that announcement were probably the most heavily-moderated in AVC history—a few tentpole commenters had brushes with bans over stuff that wouldn’t bat an eye today, almost everyone had a comment deleted, there was a crackdown on gimmicks, &c. That’s because the commenters fundamentally knew who each other were as far as the AVC was concerned and what they could say. I don’t think there’s that much lecturing from the articles (though I agree that they can be a bit lazy—the AVC seems to unconsciously veer towards Clickhole territory earnestly from time to time—seriously, that Dr. Hibbert article), but people are more on-guard (with good reason) in the comments which makes that sort of relaxed, jokey atmosphere harder to sustain.

Alright, that's fair. I'd forgotten about that. Definitely some rose-tinted goggles on my part. People are definitely more on guard now, and it's saddening. It feels like we're a lot harsher on each other's political views and less forgiving of disagreements now, and maybe that's why it's only been over the last year and a half or so that I've started to feel the lecturing vibe. It's like this is the last week of a month-long summer camp or something, and all our irritations and resentments with each other are bubbling over. I may be off.

There's nothing noteworthy about him other than that.

So--today kinda excepted--it also seems like they've dropped Inventory. I know it got alot of flak but it was one of the last holdovers from Old Skool AVClub and I have alot of affection for it.

Meth Lab Shenanigans Oddly most of my angriest replies come not from people who actually disagree with me but people who skim or misread my posts and write a long angry response to what they thought I wrote, which tells me there are a lot of people who come to the comments looking for an argument or fight and they’ll try their hardest to get one. I haven’t read as much in the past few months (and generally try to stick to stuff I think I’ll actually like), but the writers and commenters do seem to be on kind of different wavelengths. I can’t blame them, though—the Ghostbusters comments turned to hot garbage fast (like, immediately fast), with people either saying Hassenegger liked Feig too much to be “objective” or saying he didn’t do enough to critique the film’s problematic elements. I mean, posting first, reading later is an old AVC tradition but so is not taking yourself too seriously.[/i]

"Irrelevant comments" might be the most succinct description of the AVC comments section in general, though.

Like I said, I don't hate the guy, but I can absolutely understand why he irritates people.

Seriously, Inventory and AVQ&A are two of my favorites because they get people talking about a variety of things, depending on the topic. I'd hate to have to lose those to more half-assed "thinkpieces".

What is up with the front page, anyway? For days now, features that have posted at midnight haven't shown up at the top of the page until far into the morning. And now it's only two features on top, while three other new entries in ongoing columns are below the Newswire that has no new entries for twelve hours.

Yeah, so they've cut so many features that there are now only 2 spots above the fold instead of 6, they just misspelled the name of one of the most revered character actors on TV in one of those 2 spots, and I can no longer see Disqus notifications on my faux-Disqus AVC account. This is grim.

Where instead I get an ad telling me to log in to Disqus. (Also I love that people still say above the fold for a website.)

I find once I've refreshed a few times and waited several minutes the notifications fuckup seems to go away. So even that's inefficiently done if they're (Disqus, not the AVC) trying to screw us out of our AVC-only accounts.
After several months of paying better attention, I can see why Mohd annoys people, but the vehemence of the dislike seems a little weird when there are longtime regulars who are just as obnoxious (if not more) and don't attract a tenth of the anger.
Still goggling (heh) at the "Walter Goggins" thing, too, but it was almost worth it to see someone post the lyrics to the Kinks' "Do You Remember Walter?" in the comments. I pretty much upvoted every joke of that sort on general principles.

Black Emperor in the middle of the name, and would only write it at the end where it was originally. Of course, the copy editors fixed it in the column so that it does appear in the middle. Sorry Goggins, you don't rate.

Reasonable Discussions is an hour late... I'm still not seeing anything, either. Of all the things to fudge like this? The one feature that takes almost no effort. Between this and the Comics Panel coming out yesterday midnight (though that's happened a few times before), my AVC clock's getting seriously fucked up. On the plus side, at least we got a GJI in its place about a credit card you can use to buy things deemed ironic.

Whatever shift in the AVC comments it mirrors an internet-wide shift—spent a good chunk of the afternoon on MENA twitter and people were lamenting the lost age of twitter subtlety of 2009-2011.

I have an AV Club account, and no desire to create another account with you. Why can't you just leave well enough alone?
