Does anybody click on "Here's what's on sale on Amazon today"? Funny timing, I just did for the first time because I saw a Stepbrothers thumbnail and thought it was an article or feature. I was disappointed.

Along the same lines, this shit again. But is anyone surprised Joe Blevins thinks: "now might be the perfect time to head to the nearest grocery store or convenience mart and pick up some LaCroix-brand sparkling water. It comes in a variety of flavors, including apricot, mango, and tangerine, and it’s sodium-free to boot. For those who like to stay hydrated but find plain water just a little too dull, LaCroix could be a pleasant change of pace."

Web journalism, having found no path to long-term financial sustainability, settled for satisfying itself with moimoi’s scorn.

When I saw LaCroix in the headline I knew there'd be discussion about it here. I couldn't bear to go so far as reading the article, so thanks for doing your part.

The blunder was ever letting O'Neal go away. I'm glad he was into StarWipe, but I never saw how it was fundamentally more of a joke than "what are we all doing with our lives", which he did very well indeed on the last day. He really is great to have back at AVC. The new soundtrack column is so good.

I don't want to speak ill of specific people or seem trashy, but man...Joe Blevins' name is a guarantee of a waste of time. "Here's a video I found on Reddit, followed by a two-paragraph summary of every event in the video."

Yeah, I'm conflicted because I can't imagine anybody who went to journalism school wants to be writing such crap, but these days, a lot of writers on the internet are just hacks. Don't know the man personally, but if I ever came across him in Chicago, I'd try to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Everything about his stuff suggests that his background is in web marketing and "content generation."

(Actually, I didn't go to journalism school, I went to a liberal arts college that turns out a lot of journalists without one. But I do know that newsrooms are increasingly turning into "multimedia content generation".)

Now, I fucking hated it, and got semi-fired because I was too busy trying to write good stuff to publish things as fast as they wanted. But I'm still at the company (doing something I hate less), and the people who do it now are weirdly passionate about it. They're really really excited about publishing stuff that's not much better than clickbait. Diff'rent strokes, man. Diff'rent strokes.

Given the toxicity spawned by pro-feminism article comments (however well-written the initial article is), should we consider them blunders or mere monuments to man's folly?

Confession: I am a sucker for these "Year theme" weeks like the 1996 week they just kicked off.

"Was 50 Cent’s latest row with his penis all just a trolling publicity stunt, aimed at getting people to talk about Power, a show that is, huh, in its third season on Starz?" I love that man so much. Also his entry on the alternative music bust of 1996 hits pretty close to what I went through at the time.

I think 1996 week is one of the best moves they've made in a while. Reading through the comments it's almost like old times - people just seem so much more comfortable and less aggressive.

His article on '96 is great except that it fails to acknowledge that That Thing You Do is an excellent movie.

Is it just me or do a lot of the n00bs seem oddly contemptuous of, well, everything (even O’Neal—when he returned I saw some “what is this Starwipe bullshit doing in my AV Club?” comments)? It reminds me a bit of a milder version of what happened with places like 4chan. New users showed up because of how infamously edgy it was without understanding that a lot of it was - at the time - sarcastic or satirical. And so it became what we see today because of those people unironically parroting ironic statements. I think people know the AV Club as "the website with all the snark" and so new users show up assuming that it's where people who just like brutally mocking everything around them go.

I’m noticing that commenters tend to come out of nowhere, post ubiquitously for a while, and then disappear, which happened in days past too but usually with some kind of gimmick or quasi-gimmick attached—maybe that’s also a summer thing, too). ...guilty as charged...

I always shake my head when people talk about how great the comments used to be, maaaan. There's a reason I didn't participate until 2012.
