I think it went from an unusual Gen X site to an average millennial one, and it's the average part that's the problem. The Onion got a brilliant millennial successor with Clickhole, but the AV Club is sort of stuck halfway - it wants a younger audience but now lacks a lot of the quirkiness that drew the older users in in the first place, so it fails to get that younger audience because they weren't there for when the site was great and unique. Young pop culture nerds will just seek out a subreddit for whatever they're into instead, because the modern AVC doesn't really offer anything better. It used to. But now it doesn't. (It probably doesn't help that the commentariat is regularly and loudly disdainful of most music that young people like, but I digress.) *Pauses listening to Joey Bada$$* We are?? Not everybody. Just a bunch of really loud people.

I posted about a book in the Reasonable Discussions article in the "What are you reading thread?" Someone asked me a question. I cannot respond directly in the notification, because I don't have an actual Disqus account. If I go back into the article itself, I don't see all the comments, including my original comment and the reply the user made. There is no way for me to answer the question. I've seriously felt bad lately because I'll get a notification of a response, read it in the notification window, but can't respond or even upvote it because I'm still running an AV account and I'll give it up when they pry it from my dead cold hands. But my only recourse is to go back to the original thread, sift through possibly hundreds of comments to get to it, and then reply or upvote, and fuck that. I'm in the exact same boat. Fuck that indeed.

Today NPR was talking about Gawker and how it was finally bought by Univision. They also mentioned other English websites Univision has acquired stakes in, including "The Onion, and its sister publication Clickhole."
Ohhh snap, someone got snubbed.

Oh hey, I was listening to that same broadcast. At the time I was so surprised that he mentioned Clickhole of all things that I didn't even realize about the snub.

Today they got me to accidentally click on the "here's what's on amazon" page by having Fallout 4 listed in the title. I was actively avoiding complaining about those "articles", since I would just ordinarily avoid them. THEY'VE INCURRED MY MUTED WRATH!

I did the same thing, but to be honest I am not even angry; I'm too busy being saddened and scared by the people who are so addicted to AVC that they're COMMENTING ON IT

It did that to me today too, and because I'm ridiculous I felt guilty because I couldn't reply to people offering me congrats quickly enough! Me too. Causing me to waste even more time scrolling to respond to any comments.
Granted it doesn't make me feel guilty enough to switch to a Disqus account.

Wow, DNS attack--looks like Fatman's really stepping up his game I am 95% sure it was retaliation for the Harambe newswire.

Must be DDOS attack from the Russians. Fix bayonets! with how poorly designed av club is you don't need to utilize a botnet to take it down, just a simple DoS will suffice. *Pushes up nerd glasses* #takeSecurity+tomorrow

I feel like we should keep a list of all the people who responded with height jokes to the GJI about how little people in Hollywood tend to suffer from horrible addictions/meet early deaths, and wave it in their face next time they try to be moral authorities on anything at all.
For a site that practically lives on a high horse these days, the commentariat sure can be cruel.

I just got a pop-up ad at the AV Club asking me to sign up for their newsletter. The opt-out is "No Thanks, I don't need important updates." Important Updates? Really? Like is this a new amber alert system?
I'm already getting useless emails from you every day. Why would I sign up for even more useless emails?

There’s definitely an element in the commentariat that thinks they’re this While in fact they’re really this:

I hope the Adam Ruins Everything or whatever sponsored content aren’t really the most read article on the site and that’s just part of the promotion.

After two weeks of promotion, a six-day-old page spends an entire Monday being the "most-read post" in the sidebar despite not being linked on the front page.

Seeing a "sign up for our newsletter!" pop-up thing covering the content is one of my breaking points for any site that does it. It's user-hostile design and I can't stand them, so I guess I'm finally done with the AVC at this point.

Also, man, Undercover just feels like a damp dish towel these days. It seems barely talked about, almost none of the bands are memorable or good, the song list is weird (in a boring way), the video is *awful* this year, and half the time you get shunted off to some weird "Onion Studios" site with no comments that's not tied in any way to the page on the AVC that *does* have comments.
That feature's been losing all its interestingness on a steady downward slope since they got rid of the round room.

I've got four that I would enthusiastically vote for. But you're right that the new video production is the worst. Who chose that? And unless you're clicking on an entry on the day it was posted, there's the commentless Onion Studios page. I haven't lost interest in the feature, but I feel like the AVC itself sure has.

Admittedly it's not a feature I followed closely, and in fact I only recently checked out a video from this season, but I have to agree. When did they stop doing the little pre-performance interviews? Hearing even the slightest insight into why the artist chose the song they did gave the series a little more oomph to me. I also find it impossible to follow a season. Like, I just want to see all the videos in season whatever, in order of release, but I can't seem to find that. Maybe I'm just stupid?

Not only does it happen once a day, after I click "no thanks" I can no longer scroll the page with arrow keys or page down and I have to refresh AAARRRRRGH

Now it seems more bad then good. Pop ups, overdose of GJI!, Disqus finding ways to make life more work, overwhelming amounts of snark and mean pettiness. It's gotten to where I miss the gimmick posters there used to be way too many of. To quote our future Emperor: Sad!

In case you didn't know this already, I'd avoid the comment section on the story about Lena Dunham's recent apology. There's nothing to be gained there.
