They're not comment-blocked. The videos are, even the fortune cookie one which seems to *not* be sponsored. So, my point stands. Clickbait content stuffed with ads, no comments for fear of frightening off the advertiser dollars. Milkshake-ranking for a single franchise's products as a FOC.

Yeah, seriously, it's the 50th anniversary of one of the most significant sci-fi franchises in all of entertainment history, and the best they've done thus far is a half-assed newswire about stamps and a GJ,I. But, thankfully, they're letting us know which Blizzard is the best. There may be more coming. There's now a GJI about William Shatner outtakes, too. FOC: Transparent aluminum is a stupid, unnecessary idea which imperils the entire timeline so the audience get to see a cute SFX shot of whales beaming into a tank.

I'd like to discuss the drinks in question, or have people talk about variants in the comments. But they might fear that it'll snowball into discussion about the people in the video, rather than the drinks? I don't know.

Hey, it also gave the audience a solid comedy scene with McCoy, Scotty and that Guy who Quit Smoking.

People are going crazy over the Blizzard ranking list. Actually some of the comments over there felt like old AV Club, even if the content of the article itself made me pine for a different time.

It seems like most of the comments nowadays are just about how shitty the AVC content has gotten. (and rightfully so)
Is there a point where you go "maybe I shouldn't comment here anymore"

(and rightfully so) Is there a point where you go "maybe I shouldn't comment here anymore" I keep reading people saying "you know, maybe I should remove this from my bookmarks". These remind me of the people who would hate on The Leftovers like their lives depended on it, and yet would return every week to watch.

I always got the vibe that they were still furious over the ending of Lost. (which really wasn't all that bad anyway...)

I know, right? But there were some that loathed it, and didn't mind telling you how stupid the rest of us were for liking it. In fact would show up week after week to be first in line!

Like, ok, if you didn't like or get the sideways universe, fine. But that last shot of Jack lying on the beach and his eye closing was perfect. It was way better than the series finale of HIMYM. Argh.

Honestly, all the people whining about Supper Club are annoying the fucking shit out of me. Food is part of pop culture, not just culture. It makes sense that to generate more revenue, TOC would start including these kinds of articles. But 95% of the complainers are acting like they've got guns held to their heads and are being forced to read the articles, and I've had to restrain myself from telling them to just shut the fuck up and stop reading them if they don't like them more than once over the past few days.

There's plenty of stuff TOC writes about that I don't care for or actively dislike. I just avoid those particular articles or reviews because why waste my time like that? I don't understand people who whine and bitch and moan about the death of a website because it adds a new feature. It's still not Buzzfeed by a long shot, no matter how many people bring out the world's tiniest violins because it isn't "their" AVC anymore.

I'm not going to give it a pageview and then take the time to go down and complain about it. Thats what the Tolerability Index is for! And really is ranking fast food or blizzards all that different than taste tests / candy convetions of yesteryear? I'm kinda tired of the incessant whining too.

I click on GJI articles that seem at least halfway interesting, but there's tons of things like video game reviews or sci-fi discussions that don't hold my interest, so I read the stuff that does interest me. I only have so much time in the day, even when I'm not very busy at work. I also think it's really shitty to walk into a thread, so to speak, where people are having a great time talking about the subject at hand, and then shooting them down with "this is lame and stupid and doesn't belong on the website." Why do people want to be a buzzkill so bad and crap on everyone else's good time? I don't understand the "but it's not pop culture" argument from people who surely grew up on the Hamburglar and the Where's the Beef lady, just to name a few examples of food-related pop cultural phenomena. Almost every child in the world can look at a McDonald's golden arch and recognize that symbol for what it is. Although I'd like to see more serious discussions that relate to food other than fast food, it certainly does have a place in talking about pop culture. I feel it's disingenuous to claim otherwise, and I would even if I didn't have a personal relationship with cooking and food that goes beyond most people's.

I'm good with Food as a category, if they do something interesting about it. But so far, it's mostly been singing the praises of specifically American products rather than the wider exploration you walk about (and which I'm up for - I would read the shit out of pieces on symbolism in food culture, for example). There's a difference between bitching about it as a category and bitching about its implementation - which is the majority of my problems with it so far.

And I think that's an important distinction to make, so thanks for bringing that up. I would absolutely like to see more than just discussions of American/American fast-food products, I really would. But so far I'm really not bothered because the feature's only been live for 2 days. In a month if they're still ranking Taco Bell nachos or something, yeah, I'll be irritated.

As others have mentioned I have nothing against the food idea, it's more the instant glut of pure crap that it spawned that bothers me (and is probably increasing the volume of the whining.)
I will miss Teti as EIC even if I don't like the direction the site has taken recently. He would at least respond when you personally sent him a message asking wtf is up with article X?
