Despite the mildly unwieldy title, (it should have been called Star Wars: Rogue One), I am extremely excited for this. The trailer was just released and it looks incredible:
This looks like it might be the platonic ideal of a Star Wars spinoff in some ways, though a purely original story might be preferable to a prequel of sorts.

I don't know, I'm sure it will be fun enough and I'll end up seeing it in the theater, but part of me still wishes I was just spending an extra year getting excited about seeing Rey, Finn, & Poe again instead getting this.

Playing Mon Mothma is Genevieve O'Reilly, who had previously been cast as Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith (she's still in it, but her dialogue, an example of which is below, was cut.)

From the looks of it it has a much more down to earth feel. Not a lightsaber in sight. Color me cautiously excited.

Wow...okay, I am inordinately excited to see AT-ATs on another planet.

I'm into it. I like the idea of a Star Wars universe heist movie. Hopefully it's not too grim.

I'm stoked. A friend of mine expressed her wish to see it play out sort of like a monster movie, with Vader chasing down the rebels near the very end, and absolutely decimating them so we can see how he made the rebellion fear him so much. I'm not so sure that they'll go that dark with it, but it's an interesting thought.

He's in the trailer (unless someone's stealing his distinctive black cape look.) Whether or not he'll be featured prominently is another question. Vader showing up to utterly decimate Rebels is, incidentally, consistent with how Disney has been using him thus far - his first encounter with the heroes in Star Wars: Rebels essentially involved him and his trusty TIE Advanced eating A-Wings like they were cheese (and practically playing chicken with an entire Rebel fleet.) I've not been reading their comics, but they apparently go something like this: I'd bet even money at least some of these people aren't coming home alive, and good odds that Vader will rack up a body count.

The Vader comic is pretty fun actually. I've been reading a lot of the new Marvel Star Wars stuff in trades from the library and the only one that didn't really work for me was the Lando mini-series. Even the Chewbacca solo mini-series was pretty damn fun.

I've been really skeptical about the idea of Star Wars spinoffs but the instant I saw a dude in that fucking goofy Rebel hat from the Tantive IV I was 100% in. And then Mon Mothma! A real Star Destroyer! Sad white cape guy! A melee weapon that doesn't bzzzssshhhh! Tropical AT-ATs! Forest Whitaker!
Fuck it, my life is now just Star Wars hype.

There were stories that Disney wanted to make use of Vader starting from soon after the takeover. I suspect that they're going to start with him here and probably work up to a Vader movie before long, where he's chasing the protagonist the whole time.

I am not a Star Wars fan by any means, but I did love Monsters and Felicity Jones leads this movie so I may be interested in it. By far though, the Star Wars movie I'm excited for is the one Rian Johnson is directing; I loved Looper to bits (yes, creepy looking Gordon Levitt too).

As a side note, hot damn, the notion actually following the Rebel Alliance as a political and military entity composed of actual galactic citizens and not buzzcut uber-Jedi is delightful. The Force Unleashed being noncanon has so many benefits.

The trailers for the Force Awakens were no great inspiration to me. The movie was fine, but it hardly changed my world.
This trailer looks far more interesting. I hope the movie is likewise better.

"When are we going to get another strong male lead in a Star Wars movie?"

"When are we going to get another strong male lead in a Star Wars movie?" Something an actual person said on AVC. My distressingly tea party leaning friend sent a text complaining about another female lead as his initial reaction to the teaser. Then a little bit later he was saying how exciting it was to see new star wars movies with his two daughters. No connection was made.

I saw some nerd pointing this out. First, the Star Destroyer from Rogue One looked a little odd to the nerd because of this prominent bit: Compared to the look one normally associates with Star Destroyers, as this one from Empire: ...but, if one looks at the Devastator, Darth Vader's flagship in the original film: Maybe this isn't just any Star Destroyer, maybe it's the one that made movie history with its iconic long tracking shot beneath it at the start of A New Hope, and, hey, maybe Vader's totally in this. (Yes it could just be an Imperial I class star destroyer as opposed to an Imperial II, but let's dream.)

That girl is not a Bothan, so she better not be stealing any Death Star plans.
Overall though, cautiously optimistic.

I'm wondering where they are going to draw the suspense from. It is a bit hard for me to get interested in a film based on a plot we know is successful, carried out by people we'll never hear of ever again. I suppose they could all die at the end, but that seems a bit too grim for Disney.
Originally, I was a bit hopeful that Darth Vader might be in the film. But the trailer has me hoping instead to catch a glimpse of Emperor Palpatine.
What I do like is the idea of Ben Mendelsohn as a Star Wars villain. Oh God.... Is Disney going to make a Ben Mendelsohn action figure?.... Anyway, he's awesome and that sounds awesome. I also like the idea of a Star Wars movie ending without the good guys blowing up a Death Star.
We'll see, I guess. I am marginally more interested after seeing the trailer than I was before.
Edit to add: Oh, does this mean Lego might re-release the Lego AT-AT? Been wanting one for years.

I have no problem with knowing that the mission is a success. Deep down we all know that most conventional stories end with the protagonist defeating the antagonist. A good writer distracts us from that knowledge by spinning a good yarn.
