It looks a little casual to me. My all-black dress is very dressy and not churchy, so it's either that dress with heels and jewelry or black pants and a nice top. I don't have a ton of options, unfortunately. Edit: my one other choice is a medium-blue a-line dress with cap sleeves that, to me, seems more casual yet.

I don't think people are as picky nowadays about what they wear to memorial services/funerals. I think black pants and a nice top would be good. I'm sure the dress would be fine too, though, esp. with a little cardigan or something.

Fashion people: what kind of shoes/socks combo is good for walking a lot, but doesn't look dorky with shorts? I'm mostly secure in my dork cargos-clad dadness at home, but would like to make a little bit of an effort for my childless travels abroad. I'm feeling good about my wardrobe everywhere except the foot and ankle zone, please help.

Yeah, Chuck Taylors are also acceptable, as long as you don't pull the socks up.

"wrote his Ph.D. thesis about cargo pants." [Edited to add] "[Michael] Jordan had previously worn cargo pants at the club without incident."

I got these and these. And now I'm officially NOT ALLOWED to buy shoes again until like 2020. Have any of you sold unwanted jewelry? I have a few gold items I never wear that I want to get rid of. Looking for website recommendations so I don't have to drop in at the local pawn shop. I would love to see those heels in a flat or even a wedge. I love the color-blocking.

I wore that dress to the memorial service and it was fine. Took a big scarf along as a shawl.
After husband's grandma died, some family jewelry got passed along to me. One piece is a sapphire and diamond ring that is really not my style at all, but now I'm looking into having it re-designed in a new setting based on Zora's sapphire from Legend of Zelda. Yes, this is super geeky. But if you GIS zora sapphire ring there are some lovely designs out there. The stones are all pretty small so it won't be anything too flashy.
I know, I'm lucky. I never would have expected to own much fine jewelry, but between my MIL and my husband's grandparents there's apparently a lot in the family.

Plus, having moved to LA right before (what I expected to be) autumn I didnβt have much in the way of short-sleeved shirts, so this summer Iβve rectified it. Both with big color blocks: Ooo, Brooks Brothers! Fancy!

I got a pair of pants that fit perfectly, are a lovely shade of coral, and were only three dollars at the thrift store.

SHOULD I BUY BMO DOC MARTENS?The money would have to come out of my travel fund, but it's not an unmanagable amount of money to replace. There is only one pair left in my size !!!!!! and they are $135 on the Docs site.

Technically, I told my wife "These would make a really good birthday present" since she's been having trouble finding something. The "Hell" ones. So: yes, more or less.

I'm thinking it's fall wardrobe spruce-up shopping time. My look most of the time lately, for fall and spring especially, has been lightweight layers with dark jeans and boots. Comfy/cute t-shirts or camisoles, lightweight open-front cardigans, that sort of thing. I have what is basically the perfect cardigan - 3/4 length sleeves, lightweight but warm, grey so it goes with everything. Unfortunately it was a Ross find and has seen better days. I fear I may only get one more year out of it. I spotted these at H&M and will try on: www.hm.com/us/product/51517?article=51517-Dif they look good I swear I'm buying three (probably black, grey and burgundy). Probably Land's End for some t-shirts, they look to be a little better quality than the Target ones I've been buying. And I think I'll take my old booties to the shoe repair guy and see if there's any hope for them. They were super cute and comfy but got scuffed up pretty badly.

My shopping was successful. I dropped my old Bare Traps shooties off for some cleaning/reconditioning so even though they won't look good as new, for $37 I can wear them another year or two at least. I pick those up Tuesday. I bought two cardigans at H&M - not the ones I posted, which had weird sleeves and weren't quite what I wanted after all. Instead I got this one: www.hm.com/us/product/19460?article=19460-A#article=19460-R in the dark grey and light grey. I bought three t-shirts on clearance at Lands End, in dark blue, light blue and purple. I spend like, September through March in lightweight layers and love an open cardigan over a t-shirt so these will give a nice boost to my wardrobe.

Okay, Fashion Club: I'm faced with something serious. My knee surgery is in two weeks and will be followed by weeks on crutches, wearing a brace, and...wearing shorts. I never wear shorts outside of playing sports. The couple pairs of shorts I own that aren't athletic shorts are cargo shorts dating to 2005, bought specifically as consequence of my last ACL repair.
Wifemate doesn't particularly care if I wear cargo shorts, and it doesn't disturb me to any great spiritual degree, and that's really the most important thing. My question is, what is my alternative? I am going to be stuck in shorts for a month; I need a place to put my wallet and phone, whatever I wear. Is there any form of shorts I could buy that I wouldn't look terrible in during the middle of some future summer when I don't have a brace on?

There are always what are functionally "dress shorts," which are basically like short khakis or dockers or whatever. I just bought a few pairs at Dillard's since they're in the midst of their mega-clearance, and they were about $10 each. Personally, I wear cargo shorts all the time, as does everyone else I tend to see on the weekends. But you kind of need to in Florida for eight months out of the year, and so it tends to be less judgey about them.

They do make "jean short" style shorts that are neither cargo nor do they look (to me) like the proverbial "jort" - they're cotton and have jean-style pockets, but not the big ugly cargo short style. My husband wears them most of the summer. The khaki/dress/docker style short would also be an option.
