Parked next to me at the Martin State Airport MARC station: a white minivan, not old and not new, completely unremarkable except for the absolutely goddamn MASSIVE painting of (who I think is) Sailor Moon on the side panel. I didn't want to take a photo because the person who parked it was still inside at the time and that felt rude. Hopefully I can grab one when I get home tonight. It was kind of amazing.

Two crows, each grabbing a piece of dog kibble, dipping it in the bird bath to soften it, eating it, then repeating the cycle several times.
They're really smart birds.

New friend has been hanging around the house. Also, this mess is not mine, it's my neighbor's mess. My yard has a different mess.

Saw an article last week about how researchers discovered that they can count to 4. As in, using arabic numerals. The researchers would show them cards with numerals on them, and the birds would caw that many times. So, I guess they should say they can learn to recognize arabic numerals and then perform actions accordingly.

You ever walk down the street and see a falconer just hanging out, falcon perched across the arm, and he's not the weirdest guy you encounter on that block?
Welcome to Detroit.

Whatever the hell this nightmare creature is: A question for haysoos ? I'm thinking it might be an eastern dobsonfly larva (aka a "hellgrammite" a name which amazingly only gets 1 hit on Encyclopedium Metallum [there's another non-metal band called "Hellgrammites" but they seem much less good than the singular "Hellgrammite" band])

That is definitely not an earwig. I've seen plenty of those in real life. I think Eastern Dobsonfly larvae is correct based on the images a Google search pulls up.

A liquor wholesaler's distribution warehouse with a daycare center attached to one end. Seems reasonable, as there is a good chance that liquor was involved in the conception of many of the kids in that daycare center.

The Spruce Pine Alien Festival Was there anybody cosplaying Superman or The Tall Man from Phantasm? Both are canonically aliens, although not often referenced as such.

-An oversized pickup truck towing an RV trailer on the side of the road with smoke billowing from underneath - I'm guessing its brakes overheated. -A pickup truck I have never seen before - Rivian which evidently is an all-electric truck. It was not massively oversized like all the pavement princesses. -Lots of vehicles with odd colors - like some kind of gray putty color? Kind of ugly

To add my list from my trip:
A guy pulling away from the gas pump with the nozzle still in his car. He went back and I guess put it up, but didn't even bother to tell the people inside.
A POW-MIA flag. I don't think I've seen one of those since the 70s.

Whatever the hell this nightmare creature is: (that's a size 10.5 shoe for scale) Oh man, I go on vacation for a while and I miss the cool hellgrammite pictures! Yes, that is the larva of the dobsonfly, also known as a hellgrammite, which is probably the coolest name for any aquatic insect - maybe even cooler than dragonfly. I'm assuming it's an eastern dobsonfly Corydalus cornutus, as they're the most common and found everywhere east of the Continental Divide. We even allegedly have them up north in my neck of the woods, but I've never found one (and I've looked). They normally live down in the rocks and muck at the bottom of flowing rivers and streams, and eat the other bugs like stoneflies, caddisflies, black flies, and mayflies that hang out down there. It can take them up to 3 years to reach this size. When they're ready to pupate (like this guy probably was) they'll climb out onto the shore, or scrabble about to find a nice sheltered rock, log or other moist hole it can curl up in and transform. I've never heard of one crawling into an ear hole, but I think it would be great rumour to circulate. Their emergence often occurs during thunderstorms, and thousands of them may crawl out of the river during a single storm. It's thought that the vibrations from the thunder may stimulate them emerging. Their convergent evolution of horror movie tropes is purely coincidence. About two weeks later they emerge as adults. The females retain the powerful jaws they used to rip apart bugs before, and can bite hard enough to draw blood. The males grow incredibly showy and preposterous looking huge demon jaws that cause them to be feared and loathed throughout their range: True to form, although they look frightening, those jaws are actually almost useless and they cannot bite. They use them for jousting with males, and pinning the female down. The adults only live for a few days. They probably don't eat, or if they do it's a little bit of nectar from flowers. They mate, lay eggs in the water, and die.
