Oi. I may be middle class and live in the South, but assure you I'm northern. ETA: For what it's worth, I thought the Jolly Hockeysticks persona came across as a bit much, but put it down to a bit of identity over-assertion while living among the Septics. It was all too on-the-nose for me, too. I figure there are probably plenty of people who overplay their national-identity stereotypes when living abroad, but to do so in writing? All the time? Nice try, "Dom". ::EYEROLL:: Just so obviously American. *skates away, Tim Hortons cup in hand*

So did all of Harriet's friends communicate with her solely by text, fb, twitter, etc? I mean, I realise the answer to that must be a resounding 'yes', but you'd think someone would get suspicious when she never took a call from them or wanted to meet up. Yes. Look at what we've done to ourselves. There's an element of the victim being specifically chosen here (someone who chats via FB a lot and is, in the nicest way, a bit high-drama). But really, who actually calls each other anymore? I'd like to think that if someone texted me to say that someone we both knew had died, I'd actually use the call function, but I can't swear to it. A friend of mine's kid got meningitis soon after birth (survived, btw, with no neurological damage obvious, yet) and I found out by a mutual friend PMing me on facebook. And all my communication I've done with my friend since has been by text, because who wants a really awkward, stilted conversation over the phone? I'll definitely go for a beer with him when I'm up that way (I'm better at talking with people in person) but who knows when that'll be. AVC (etc) meet ups don't get organised very often, and even then it's easy to come up with an excuse to drop out (such as "dying in a car crash"). The person on the other side of these FB convos lives in the Midwest, so it's not like NYC is a short journey away. And I just assumed that some of the people who posted on Dom or Harriet's FB feed were meatspace friends. Hey, I just remembered that I was going to meet up with "Harriet" and "Dom" when they were over here for Christmas a couple of years ago, but lo and behold we couldn't arrange a day that worked for us both. Yeah, but there's Skype. None of her friends ever tried to have a video conversation with her? I personally find it easier than typing.

And it happens every now and again with other nationalities; a former co-worker (and ex-husband of a present co-worker) was both French and sleazy, and tried to cover up his innumerable instances of creepiness with "hey, I'm French!" I often wonder whether I should have alerted the consulate. I also understand there are countryfolk of mine who more or less sprout ten-gallon-hats on leaving the States for any length of time. Don’t worry, I can assure you the relevant authorities are keeping close tabs on Murray the Demonic Skull.

Googling the author reveals that she works for The Sun, so now I'm not sure how I should feel about this story.
Or maybe it's her autistic doppelganger who's working there, it's hard to tell from this end of the Atlantic ocean.

Someone (who cleverly does not give his name or location) called this in as a momentous occasion on this week's Jordan, Jesse, Go. All right. Who did it? My money is on 'Dom'.

Edit to add: Ha! I really hope it was him, because they completely ignored the call and spent five minutes talking about The Fast and the Furiousers movies.

FWIW the obit has been pulled and it’s an AVC administrator login page if you look at it now.
