I commented on the Tobe Hooper obit, but didn't bother with the PCW (I sometimes skipped it before the events of last Wednesday, in fairness). I expect my commenting will just gradually get whittled down to nothing. It's a shame, and I'm already missing it, but I suppose I could do with the time back. But think of all the time you could spend trolling Breitbart now! I would, but it's disastrous for my upvote ratio. Slightly moot point now, I suppose.

I checked out last week's Game of Thrones Experts thread, just a minute ago. It's full of commenters (by which I mean, like, 10 people) I don't recognize asking what happened to the insightful comment section. Myles McNutt is in there saying the old comment migration will happen "in the next 36 hours or so". He said that four days ago.
I am now taking bets on whether the Disqus comments ever migrate over. I'm giving 4:1 odds, step right up.

I took the AVC off of my bookmarks. It's not good for children and other living things. I'm out.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to sign in to Kinja on my work laptop. I had no trouble with my personal laptop or work desktop, both of which I was already using for Disqus-AVC with remembered passwords. But to log into Kinja, the only options are a burner account or a linked social media account (ha, no). how the hell do you log in with a ported AVC account?

I just tried to go to AV Club for the first time in a week. The layout is horrific. It drove me crazy to look at it.
I never want to link any of my social media accounts to Kinja. That is an absolute hell no.
Sigh. Is it time for me to also remove AV Club from my bookmarks?

Tonight's GOT reviews are the first great test. It is failing. Edits take a million refreshes to see, and reply notifications don't take you to the reply comment if you're already looking at that page.

I glanced at the new site design and felt a twinge of sadness. I realize the staff likely had almost no say in any of this, but I find the format to be terrible for reading in-depth content. y'know, the main reason I even used the site in the first place... swapping in a vastly inferior commenting system would've been bad enough, but that's the real kiss of death, far as I'm concerned. maybe it's fine for two to three paragraph blurbs, but there are so many other sites that specialize in that kind of crap. a race to the bottom was not the answer.

I think I might just get a $10 eBay figurine, if anything. why the fuck do I keep those stupid Nintendo Amiibos in their boxes? I have two. it's not like the things are gonna go up in value unless held for three decades plus.

No American Gods stories of working opposite Ian McShane. Ah well, still plenty of good stuff in there.

I think it was around $300 CDN? yeah, no. also... impractical. I'll see if I can find an inexpensive 5" figurine on eBay. I saw one awhile ago and should've just ordered it. little dude has been my avatar in various places for maybe 9+ years now? back on topic... fuck Kinja. to reiterate: the asinine lack of readability. what's the point in having a better CMS for publishing your articles if nobody reads them? womp womppppppppp

I have a Bossy Bear but it's a teeny vinyl figure. that's what I'll probably get! look at the sleepy version! he looks mildly annoyed / disapproving of stupid shit! my internet spirit animal! now I'm mildly sad that I can't get my hands on that.

I still haven't tried to register on Kinja; this burner-only account option for me (I don't have any social media accounts) is really irritating to me. Anyways, it seems like the site design is actually getting worse, even from last week's relaunch. The row of boxes at the top, no delineation into features, tv club, newswire, etc. And yeah, smuggling in content from sister sites with their banner content is shady.

And yeah, smuggling in content from sister sites with their banner content is shady. All of the Kinja sites do that (and always have, I think). I'm guessing that they'll start condensing and cross-posting a lot of the overlap traffic as a result.

I think the writing's on the wall - management doesn't care about comments. And I kind of understand that. AVC comments have been some of the better comments on the Internet, but they're still comments on the Internet.

Gawker was doing it even pre-Kinja. it seems to have increased quite a bit after Fusion bought Gawker/Gizmodo.

They are trying to add requested features back into the design, but are doing it in the most awkward way possible. Case in point: the grades on review articles. I just find it hard to believe that such a small percentage of their traffic is from desktop/laptops that they put no effort into designing for it. That or like most IT/web departments they are underfunded or understaffed.

Seriously, though, why can't they show what type of Feature each article is? I generally like to peruse the comments on What's On Tonight on my way to work in the morning, but finding it now is just a chore.
